  • Agreed on that -- two days ago I did a brisk walk home, over 8 miles -- instead of hitting the pool. I'll do it again, but .. ugh! Last night 2500 yds in 55 minutes or so. Looks like I'm about 500 behind you, @60sPanda
  • I started regular swimming last March after a pause of ... 35 years? Something like that. I couldn't make a 25 yard lap without stopping. Nobody cares what you look like. Everyone's there to do their workout. You'll get better with practice. Set small goals and you'll see improvement very quickly. I recommend getting some…
  • I've forgotten much more than I remember. For now I'm just doing a crawl kick. Don't have any sort of beat figured out yet. Last night I did an early set of 100 with fins, then got into a little bit of a "race" with the guy in the next lane who has always tried to pass and lap me. I ended up being able to stay ahead of…
  • Got talked into doing some kickboard drills last night. Kicked my butt, literally, without fins. I haven't done those since I was on swim team about 40 years ago. Clearly I need to put in a lot more work with the board. I think when I started swimming again last March I used my legs as little as possible to reduce…
  • Managed to get over 11000 yards last week. Started off the week last night with 2500 and a little competition with a fellow slow swimmer in the next lane over. Definitely improved my pace.
  • Turtles with watches! We could have our own swim team...
  • sorry to hear that @emmab0902 -- hopefully it won't keep you from your meet. I had a leisurely day in the pool with rare blue skies. 3200 yards and a pace that was sluggish. Don't care, because blue skies.
  • I've lost a buncha weight and am in the 'often cold' population. I wear a hat (toque) at home when really feeling it and it makes a big difference. I'd rather be cold than heavy. That's the truth!
  • Yup, the male half of the teen hormones lives at my house.
  • That post a couple pages back about leaving a teenage couple alone in the house? Yeah, drama is happening. Not as in OMG I'm gonna be a grandad (thankfully) but the two of them are learning some valuable lessons. Even better, the hickey session didn't happen at my house, but at the girlfriend's so my parenting shortcoming…
  • Yes. It's like bonus witness protection program. Personally, I like this experience.
  • Brought the fins out after weeks of being scared of them. Two sets of drills, and had the start of cramps but was able to relax my legs and keep going. Only very short (200 and 100 yard) drills but it's progress. Also some 100 and 50 sprints in the middle of everything. 2600 yds, 58 minutes swim time but the fin drills…
  • Wait -- a new head? I could use one of those. This one I'm stuck with is getting all wrinkly and gray and its eyeballs are more than a bit wobbly. But seriously, to the OP, you have gotten some solid advice here and I am impressed that you're willing to listen and learn. And read, even. That seems to be a rare trait these…
  • 2700 yds in 63 minutes. Need to squeeze in some more sprint intervals. 5300 yds (3 miles) for the week and I'm still not to fishgutzy's daily!
  • I told them it would be 30 minutes. Hard to outsmart motivated teen hormones.
  • That is incredible. After laps tonight, my buddy told me about an open water event in Lake Washington in July that goes between the two floating bridges. A little over three miles. He said they recommend being able to do 5000 pool yards in 1:45. Would be great to work up to doing that. www.fatsalmonswim.com
  • 3000 yards yesterday. No cramps until the last length when pushing hard.
  • I left my 16 year old son and his girlfriend in the house alone while I went out for an hour walk/run.
  • I'm guessing most anyone who has lost a large amount has the "secret recipe" for weight loss. And they do, because it worked for them. I was dragged into this a year ago -- exactly today -- and it was a great program to get me going. Focus on one thing a week for a few weeks, then turn it loose. I'm down 90 pounds in a…
  • My older son is home from college for winter break and is working this week as substitute lifeguard at our neighborhood pool. I thought that because the weather was dry the pool would be crowded yesterday, so asked him to text me if there was a clear lane. Half an hour after the two hour session started, I get "Three lanes…
  • Cool and dry last night, only one other swimmer that is a regular. Why he insists on always taking the lane next to me when there are five to choose from is a mystery. Sluggish and crampy pace, 2250 yards 53 minutes active swim time.
  • Same here. IPA and bourbon are essential dietary components! That means fitting them in when needed. Sometimes it means a make-up day afterward, usually it's planned ahead.
  • Skinny jeans. Me. Heh. Heh heh heh. Hah. Confession: wife said I should try them now. On my aged frame, no less. (insert more chortling here)
  • @fishgutzy : amazing. How long does that take you? My preferred option on weeknights is a one hour session starting at 7pm. There's an 0600 session for laps but either I: a) won't get up for that or b) have to drive my kid to early session at high school. I got in the pool on this frosty evening and felt like a total slug.…
  • A relaxing evening swim in brisk 35 (F) air: 2500 yds in just under an hour. Need to do some more intervals and build up speed.
  • First goal: Two miles without resting/stretching. Then improve efficiency to get 3000 yards in under an hour.
  • An amazing feat, Stephen. Job very well done. It's indeed inspiring to many to see you overcome those obstacles to truly turn your life around. Thank you for sharing.

  • I "stole" one of those from my son and love it. I like it better than the smaller swim chamois.
  • Did not swim due to too much residual New Year's cheer. Tomorrow, though, is another day, I'm told.
  • I'm not a fan of tomato soup usually, but that looks fantastic! Recipe?
