  • It's actually just outside of the Pearl District. A couple blocks SW of there. In Portland if you walk 3 blocks, you're in a new neighborhood. (And the borders don't seem to be very well-defined, either, so my 'Pearl District' might be a tad different than somebody else's 'Pearl District')
  • Might I suggest just making the trip to Portland and picking up a growler at the brewery? (That's where I discovered it . . . on a hot day, walking through the neighborhood, and my walking partners wanted to stop into the brewery for coffee, because in the NW we drink coffee even on hot days . . .)
  • I don't have problems with the monopausal waist, but I have definately noticed that the more of my calories come from carbs, the more hungry I get. My guess is that it's a blood sugar thing.
  • Stumptown's website (what I linked to) says it's available in retailers across the country. I don't know HOW MANY retailers, though. I would really suggest calling them . . . the stuff is THAT GOOD!
  • I think it depends on your diet. You are correct that it is POSSIBLE to get enough protein in your diet, but if you're trying to juggle a bunch of numbers - calories, sodium, cholesterol, fiber - it is sometimes hard to keep them ALL where you want them, especially at first. I can eat a lot of eggs and get the protein, but…
  • I've never been an iced coffee fan. That is, until several months ago (just before starting this journey), when I found cold brew. Now I'm hooked. Cold brew is much, much better than iced coffee, and without the syrups. I don't know what the availability of this stuff is outside of my local region, but if you can find it,…
  • My go-to "protein powder", by the way . . . put a scoop of chocolate-peanut butter powder in the blender with a banana and a little water. Yummm!!!
  • They all seem to say "do not use for weight loss". I think that's a good general rule, because they do tend to have lots of calories. And if you're not careful, lots of those calories are actually carbs in some of them. I've found some protein shakes and powders that are sugar free and low carb, so they are almost pure…
  • I'm down 64.4 pounds in 114 days. That's quite a bit more than 50 pounds in 6 months. (And before anybody harps on it being 'unhealthy' . . . my doctor is ELATED! The serious health risks of being overweight far exceed the relatively minor risks of losing too quickly) Will I keep it off? I think so; we'll see (I've gone up…
  • I agree that you shouldn't cut back so much that you feel bad. Basically, when I'm hungry, I eat! I've tried days of restricting more, and it doesn't work . . . I usually eat back MORE the next day! When I finish running, I usually down a protein shake. Maybe I'm actually eating more calories than I log (for instance -…
  • Congratulations!!! I think you should forget about the fad diets and the extreme calorie counting and high protein/low fat stuff, and just listen to your doctor for the next 6 months or so. Talk to a nutritionist if possible. Nutrition requirements during pregnancy are different than they are at other times, and this is an…
  • How so? By exercising! Of course calorie deficit is what is required, but exercise greatly helps the calorie deficit. I'm set at 2 lb/week, and that gives me about 1400 calories per day. I actually eat less than that . . . about 1200-1300 per day on average . . . and find that I actually lose less than 1 pound per week…
  • Congratulations!!! Who'd'a thunk that the way to cure something called FATTY liver was to lose weight???
  • Very interesting article, @Nuke_64; thank you for that! Although I do respect and love to read Scientific American, I'm not sure I would take them as the definitive expert on the subject. But this is a very interesting discussion that I had not seen before. I am interested enough that I will do a bit more reading. Here's…
  • Okay . . . I'll be a little more clear. Sure - sodium doesn't make you gain weight (other than perhaps temporary water weight). Calories in/Calories out is what matters, and if weight is the only thing you care about, then there is no reason to watch your sodium. However, if you also care about your heart health, you…
  • Nope. But I DO believe everything the American Heart Association says.
  • Oh . . . One more thing . . . you can certainly adjust the number of eggs according to your satiety/calorie goals. I think I started out with about twice that many, but over time, as I got used to my new way of eating, I found that I could cut down to this and still be pretty full until lunchtime.
  • Here's my 6-day-a week breakfast. Gets in most of my day's Vitamin A, and kicks me off with a good heaping helping of protein: Start by tossing a couple handfuls of spinach into a hot skillet. (Lots and lots of spinach . . . I like to fill the 12 inch skillet because it cooks down so much, and there are almost NO calories…
  • I love the water idea . . . I'm going to try that; thank you, @Tried30UserNames!!! Going to have to be a very LIGHT mist, though, I would guess, so the popcorn doesn't get soggy.
  • If you believe the American Heart Association, then this is absolutely not true. Check out their infographics on sodium here. In particular, look at number 6 on this infographic. EVERYBODY should consume no more than 1500 mg per day, and, according to the AHA, the average American consumes more than twice that amount. By…
  • This one's hard. I've been eating low calorie and low sodium since I was diagnosed with high blood pressure in early Feb. I find that low calorie isn't hard, but low sodium is BARBARIC!!! I aim for 1500mg/day, but my average is about 1800. And I have never even liked salt! I have never salted food; I usually omit salt from…
  • @czabs, there is light at the end of the tunnel! Specifically, in early February I had an ALT test result of 78 (normal is 10-58). ALT is a blood enzyme that is a marker of liver function. When the liver is damaged or diseased, it releases ALT into the blood, and levels go up. So my test result of 78 was an indicator of…
  • Why can I not get John Anderson's "Straight Tequila Night" out of my head now???
  • Here's another rule of thumb: If it's "all over Pinterest", then it's pretty much guaranteed to be false!!!
  • ROUGHLY speaking, running can burn up to about 15 calories per minute. (Maybe more if you're a 300 pound sprinter. I'm talking ROUGH numbers here) At 15 calories per minute, it would take almost 7 minutes to burn 100 calories. So . . . does this regime equal the same amount of work as running for 7 minutes? (Answer: If you…
  • Calories, calories, calories. Carbs and protein are 4 calories per gram; fat is 9 calories per gram. Alcohol is 7 calories per gram. Best way is to avoid the alcohol. I suppose if you MUST drink, then straight drinks are probably a little better, since they wouldn't have sugar in addition to the alcohol. Can you stick with…
  • I'd love to know the answer to this. I get a pretty even distribution, but only by going slow. I put a cup or so of popcorn in a large tub, sprinkle a little topping, shake, shake, shake, then repeat. A little itty bitty bit at a time. I sure would like to be able to get the topping on there before the stuff cools all the…
  • Eating at home is a great way to go, but I do not believe that it's absolutely necessary. I am so busy that I eat out a LOT, and that's a big part of how I got so big. Drive-through on the way from one appointment to the next was a norm. And I didn't think I could lose because I didn't see how I could change that. I don't…
  • Last night I had to sit in an old theater seat. You know the kind . . . those narrow, wooden, fold-down things that were made for skinny pre-schoolers. The ones you have to tuck yourself into, then pry yourself out of. I was dreading it, but when I sat down, I marveled that this is the biggest old theater seat I've ever…
