  • Every morning, and with TWO different scales! I use a FitBit Aria for the BF% measurement and to automatically update FitBit, MFP, and Trendweight, and I use a mechanical bar scale to get a number that doesn't fluctuate as much. I also log it into a spreadsheet I have written for myself that does a lot more statistical…
  • I just ran across this thread because I have this problem. I am logging ATV riding in Fitbit because my riding gave me 20,000 steps and almost 200 floors of elevation gain in just a couple hours. I have to log SOMETHING to override those steps. There is no way this is sedentary . . . anyone who has ridden hard on a…
  • Yes, it does matter, because YOU matter. Your life has changed, and you may not be motivated in the same way as before, or even be able to keep up the same routines. You need to find your new motivation. Maybe if you change up some stuff . . . for example, by joining a different gym, or going at a different time of day . .…
  • I love the way you put that!
  • All this talk about practicing controlled breathing confuses me. I haven't paid any attention to my breathing while running. Thinking about this, though, I think it is likely because I am a musician (woodwinds), and controlling my breathing is something I have focused on most of my life, so it probably just comes…
  • Very nice!!!
  • Log what you eat. Let the numbers either control how often you go back or show when you have done bad. Then, at the end of the day, forgive yourself for any failure, and vow to do better tomorrow.
  • No more than you have to. In fact, why don't you try a 30 minute run and see how it feels? I think that C25K does more than just build endurance . . . it also teaches you pacing and how to push through the discomfort. You may have lost a tad bit of the endurance, but you still have the others.
  • For a bit of reference: I started C25K 6 months ago, and had HBP. That's gone now, and I run 3 x 5k each week. I'm still at least 50# overweight. My FitBit tells me that my resting heart rate is right around 60 bpm (drops to <50 occasionally at night), and my average heart rate during my 5k runs is in the high 150s. Maybe…
  • @gi62nny, I don't know whether to laugh or cry at your post. I was almost 300 pounds when I started my C25K. It's been 6 months, and I graduated C25K several months ago. I'm running 10 miles a week. I have lost 80 pounds and, although I know I have a way left to go, I look and feel better now than I ever have in my life. I…
  • You absolutely CAN increase muscle at a calorie deficit. I really doubt if that is what is happening, though. I would take a good look at both your intake and your other activities. Are you taking it a bit easier the rest of the day when you run? If so, your overall calorie burn may be going down. A run is great, but it is…
  • I run 5k 3 times a week, and I do a lot of walking on the other days (sometimes the same days). I burn LOTS more calories walking than running because I can do it longer. A 5k takes just over half an hour and I burn about 600 calories. I can walk ALL DAY, though . . . Just a few days ago I walked 23 miles and had several…
  • My wife has a Flex; I have a Surge. Really the only thing that would be worth upgrading for her is to see the step count on the device - it is a pain to have to dig out your phone and sync every time you want to see. I suspect (hope!) that the HR is used to get a more accurate calorie count, but she's only really counting…
  • Congratulations! And in 32 minutes . . . That's an INCREDIBLE first 5k time!
  • Congratulations! You've made a major accomplishment, AND had the guts to put yourself "out there". I'm going to answer this from the standpoint of someone who is on pretty much the same shoes - I hadn't run since high school, almost a quarter of a century ago. However, in the past year and a half I have done C25K TWICE!…
  • I guess that could be good reason for some. I typically burn about 4000+ calories a day (as measured by FitBit), but I have it set to sedentary, too. When I have an odd day where I need to plan my food for the day first thing in the morning, I've been doing this long enough now to know what I need. But, like you seem to be…
  • When I'm sore I get up and take a little walk. Even if just to the office coffee pot. It's sitting still that makes the soreness worse.
  • Slow down. For the run sections, do whatever you CAN do for 60 seconds. And maybe that's not a run . . . maybe it just means walking a little faster. For the walk sections, slow it back down. My wife has Muscular Dystrophy. When I started my C25K many months ago, she decided she wanted to do it, too. She spent a lot of her…
  • @tenkides , I'm a bit concerned about your normal headaches, too. Being sore the day after exercise is normal. Headaches (at least, on a regular basis) are not. Sounds like hydration is a good place for you to start. Exercise . . . I live is a cold, wet climate. So, when it gets hot, I like to relish it . . . push myself…
  • Yes, enable negative adjustments. For all the reasons that @NancyN795 said. In fact, I believe that EVERYONE should set their activity level at sedentary, and let the FitBit add to it as you progress through your normal day. I don't see any reason to set the activity level higher.
  • By the way - I don't like things on my wrist. I haven't worn a watch since cell phones became small enough to cram into a pocket. Even before that I only wore a watch when I HAD to. I've gotten used to wearing the Surge. It occasionally bothers me a little, but I remember why it's there, and it's not too bad. The first…
  • I've had a FitBit Surge for a couple weeks. And I think it's great. I have talked to people who say the FitBit HRM isn't accurate instantaneously, but is accurate for trends. However, I find that mine is very repeatable and responsive. (I haven't compared it to anything, so I don't know about ACCURACY, but it doesn't jump…
  • This is a perfect example of a basic problem that we have all had. We have all found some workarounds, but we have all still had those awkward balancing-the-fish-on-the-potato-salad moments. And I really appreciate reading other's solutions. In fact, I am literally a card-carrying member of Mensa, but today I would like to…
  • I had that problem for a while. I would weigh stuff individually on smaller plates, then transfer it to the dinner plate. Or I would realize that, with my new, smaller portion sizes, I didn't need that big plate anymore, anyway. Then, after an embarrassingly LONG period of time, I discovered that the display on my…
  • Great progress . . . and I'm glad you're pushing yourself to improve!!!
  • FitBit allows you to manually enter lots of information in their dashboard and use their software . . . EXCEPT step count. This seems to be their hook. I was using their software for a long time, and my wife had her Flex for a long time, before I bought my Surge. And if they had any way to get step count into their…
  • ^^^ This! At the end of the day, the el-cheap-o belt clip or pocket pedometers do the same thing as the $300 status symbols. Yeah, there are a few more bells and whistles and gadgets, but you can spend essentially nothing (in fact, I think some health clinics do GIVE them away) and get the same basic functionality. Most…
  • I've only had it 2 weeks, but so far I love my FitBit Surge. My wife has a FitBit Flex, and the only complaint is that you can't see the step count on the wrist band itself. We went with FitBit because we like the software.
  • I have some NewBalance socks I got at Big5,and I love them. I think they were about $15 for 3 pairs.
  • He's still in the hospital with some gruesome injuries but, because he was wearing a helmet, he will live, and probably even get back on his bicycle again.
