  • Thirty years ago I took up running and did whatever felt good. I regularly ran 5K races at pretty respectable times. Although in pretty good shape this summer, at age 57 I started running again but used the Couch to 5K program. It was very helpful in that I was able to increase my stamina and speed without getting some…
  • Why not start doing exercises now? Surely this February party won’t be the last party you’ll ever go to!! Even if you don’t see amazing results, you’ll no doubt feel better about any progress you make. Nothing like confidence to make a sleeveless dress look great. And the party you go to in March? You’ll look even more…
  • CBT is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. It’s often a short term counseling approach to talk through your challenges and discuss different approaches to solving problems or addressing behaviors and habits you want to change.
  • Actually, I am inspired by the before/after photos here in the Success Stories section. When I watch a movie, I want to eat a bucket of buttered popcorn and I kind of blow off how in shape the actresses are.
  • Do you have to eat out often? It’s a lot easier to control what you’re eating, calorie-wise, if you prep your own food. It’s also just as fast or faster than a sit-down restaurant. But, if you’re going to restaurants, consider asking for two plates and you can share one order with the toddler. If it’s drive-through, eat…
  • I second the advice to consult your doctor before using St. John’s wort. It’s not a benign supplement. I’m a generally happier and calmer person after a 30 minute walk outside. Luckily my town has some nice trails and parks, but a stroll around the neighborhood helps, too. I’m usually walking by myself, but most weekends…
  • I had a similar issue, and after three weeks went to a doctor. I had a bacterial lung infection, and the recommendation was lots of rest, fluids and antibiotics. Definitely no running!
  • Ignoring the unsolicited advice of friends who say I should join Weight Watchers, go low carb, do intermittent fasting, switch to Keto or a vegan diet. I’ve lost 30 pounds using MFP. Gimme a break!!
  • I pre-log a dessert or snack for just about every night. During the summer it was a small slice of homemade pie. Lately it’s one of those individual small squares of Ritter Sport chocolate, or two Mint Milano cookies.
  • At an aggressive loss of 2 pounds per week, you can expect to lose 40-50 pounds. I would recommend you do some type of lifting program, too. Why? I lost 30 pounds in five months and lost muscle tone in my upper arms and forearms. I also started losing hair! My arms look not so great, and I wish I’d approached my weight…
  • I eat a light breakfast about two hours before a race. I wear a baseball cap to help keep my hair out of my face, and shield my eyes from sun or rain. I have an incredibly lightweight breathable rain jacket I can tie around my waist if I get too warm in the rain. Most times though I skip the rain coat and get wet, but…
  • Nope. Makes me cranky and tired when I don’t have fuel to get me through the day.
  • Wow!! You’ve accomplished quite a lot. The holidays are behind us now, I’m sure you’ll continue to achieve success.
  • Well, I have a tendency to overeat when I’m depressed and can’t get good sleep. Plus I feel like cr*p. Go to your doctor. Ask about antidepressants and sleep-inducing medication. These could help you manage your self-loathing attitude, too. You can lose weight by eating 1200 calories a day and eating back some of the…
  • I’m 57 and lost 30 pounds this year. Some saggy skin on arms and stomach. I’ve purchased some well-fitting clothes so I feel better about my success. It’s easy to camouflage these changes. I really prefer some loose skin to obesity. I have more stamina to get through the day. Frankly, I don’t walk around in a bikini so I…
  • Sounds like your knee is not getting better. Go back to the doctor and ask for a physical therapy referral. My husband fell on his knee and didn’t go to the doctor for a few months. An MRI revealed he’d torn a ligament, which was why it wasn’t healing very well. He was told to take up swimming to rehab his knee. I tore my…
  • I had a piece of paper that listed my mini-goals next to the reward I’d get when I reached them. It was next to my computer. Easy-peasy!
  • I took a photo of my face, got a before picture, and used an app called PicsArt to create a side by side collage. Did the same with my body , just candid shots taken in casual situations. Wow! Thinner face, smaller tummy. It also helped to take my sister shopping with me. She’d laugh at me when I reached for size 14 jeans…
  • Pack an apple, a granola bar, some string cheese to slip into your backpack. Doesn’t take up too much room, and you can eat those things instead of or in addition to the limp French fries you get in your school cafeteria. Tell your parents that your sports performance is suffering and tell them the kind of food you’d like…
  • I sometimes lost motivation but the real issue was sustaining good habits. Logging your food intake really helps. I didn’t deprive myself of foods I enjoy. In fact, many nights I’ve had some gelato or cookies but only when I see that it fits within my calorie allowance for the day. If you feel like you’re about to…
  • I started doing yoga, which somehow helped me be more mindful of what I ate. I felt better as I got stronger. I think it is a good workout regardless of whether it helps with weight loss. But, I was losing weight after I began doing yoga (but I also started jogging)
  • You said that you only visit the doctor when something is wrong. Something is already wrong. Ask the doctor if your daughter is on the road to pre-diabetes. Ask the doctor for a written copy of the notes, with the weight charts and concerns and suggestions for addressing the issue. After you have that information, text…
  • Hi! I understood your original post was asking about the role of exercise in losing weight. You are running, which is great. Have you considered installing the Couch to 5K app on your phone? I was stalled with weight loss until I started that program. The first few days you’ll run (I recommend a slow pace) for a minute,…
  • I don’t get daily e-mails, I just come to this site and scroll through the Success Stories section. I find that pretty motivating and it doesn’t clog up my inbox.
  • Lately I’ve started using sugar-free Torani syrup in my coffee. Zero calories. I use the vanilla but they have chocolate. I add 40 calories with my half and half, but almond milk will give you a skinnier drink. Compare to the 160 average calories for a Starbucks 16 ounce mocha. Hint: keep your creamer in the refrigerator…
  • On the days I have a morning gym class, I put on my exercise clothes before I go into the kitchen for my first cup of coffee. I do the same on the days I plan to run. Then I have no excuse, I’ve already taken the first step, so I walk out the door and go.
  • I drink some coffee with cream, read the news, drink half of a protein shake, then go to an 8:30 Zumba class or run about 45 minutes. Afterwards, I might finish the shake but I feel more satisfied with a couple scrambled eggs to get me through until lunch.
  • I put my gym classes and a time for morning jogs on my calendar and keep those appointments for myself. It helps me keep my exercise commitments.
  • MapMyWalk for running and MapMyRide when I bike.
