  • For me, I discarded the concept of "motivation" for "discipline." Every day I came within my calorie goal I felt I achieved something positive, even if the scale didn't show any weight loss for that particular day. When I overate for the day, I chalked that up to being human and enjoying a dinner out with friends (those…
  • I managed to lose weight by incorporating desserts into my daily calorie goal. I just exercised more in order to have those treats. Sometimes it was a piece of pie or cake, sometimes just a couple small squares of chocolate. I am just not into deprivation! My life long goal is to stay within my a certain weight range. I've…
  • I think if you reset your goal to stay within a 5 pound range of your goal weight, you'll be able to manage your anxiety. You'll still have a plan and can manage that just as you did your plan to lose weight.
  • The only way I've been able to maintain after meeting my weight loss goal is allowing myself treats. Yesterday I had a brownie. The day before, two chocolate chip cookies. While I was calorie counting, I even had pie. The important part was to stay in a calorie deficit. These treats didn't really sideline my progress, it…
  • Keep logging accurately and you'll see some weight drop. The burger might have had more sodium than you're used to and you retained water weight. Just keep drinking water and you will slough it off soon. Muscle is NOT heavier than fat. One pound of potatoes equals one pound of feathers. Muscle is more dense than fat, which…

  • I used to put my baby in one of those carrier things on my chest, or in a backpack set-up, and go for a walk with him. On cold days (I lived in Alaska), I had him in a snowsuit, hat and mittens. It was really helpful to get outdoors. Later when he could walk, I'd have him in rubber boots and a raincoat on bad weather days…
  • The mirror is a liar and typical bathroom lighting is unflattering. I actually had a cheap full length mirror that made me look fatter than the one my sister has at her house! Weird. Anyway, take a photo of yourself. Next month, take another one. Download the PicsArt app onto your phone. Make a collage, with the "before"…
  • I've found it helpful to go for walks alone, and sometimes a hike with a friend. The first allows me to just decompress, the second keeps me outdoors while I socialize. It's good to keep that connection with other people, and I've found a few friends that I can relate well to because we talk about similar things like loss…
  • I made a beautiful summer sleeveless shirt I wore to a party. Someone took a full-body picture of me, and I was amazed how large I was. Though I felt lovely during the party, the picture showed that my upper arms were flabby and sprinkled with cellulite, my belly strained against the pretty fabric, and I was flabbergasted…
  • Like any shaming "joke", it's totally inappropriate. I used to work in an all-male office, and I can't tell you how many "dumb blonde" jokes I had to endure. Or the gross jokes about sex acts. These were usually told in my presence to make me feel uncomfortable. It was bullying. It was harassment. When I told them to stop…
  • I have gone through times where I was so exhausted all day that I could barely function. The key for me was having my doctor prescribe a sleep aid, which helped me fall asleep AND helped me get good quality sleep. It was a mild sedative, so if my kid was crying I'd still wake up and be able to tend to him. But I felt so…
  • This is a good problem to have. If he loves you regardless of your weight, it means he will still love you when you’ve dropped the weight, right? How cool! He is not saying, “Hey, babe, I prefer you fat.” He is not sabotaging you. You can’t take his supportive statements as excuses not to change. You just need to give him…
  • Why hasn’t your doctor prescribed medication for your allergies?
  • I always have coffee, and maybe a small protein shake. Empty stomach workouts don’t work for me.
  • I’m not sure if you’re sabotaging yourself because you feel you’ve let yourself down, but I think you have lost perspective. Why did you set a deadline in the first place? Take a deep breath. Look at your “before “ pictures. Look at pictures of yourself today. You can see the difference, can’t you? You’ve lost an average…
  • Glad you’re seeing your doctor. I moved to Alaska six weeks before I gave birth to my son. All my friends and family were then a three hour plane ride away, and I felt isolated and depressed. My doctor prescribed an antidepressant that was okay to take while breastfeeding. I also got a SAD light. I got a backpack carrier…
  • I saw a “gluten free” label on rice. Well, duh.
  • You’re making progress. It’s possible you’re retaining some water weight if you’ve just recently started working out. Keep drinking water, find an exercise class you enjoy and give yourself permission to celebrate your accomplishments. PS: take some progress photos. After you lose a Jean size you’ll be amazed to see visual…
  • Fruit provides nutrition you need, and if you stay at your calorie goal you’ll be fine. Please try to lose a little slower. I was losing at 2 pounds per week and even lifting weights I lost muscle. MFP can calculate a rate loss of 1.5 to 2 pounds if you’re interested.
  • Don’t be so mean to yourself. A big salad that fills you up might be a better choice than a small brownie.
  • If he hates zucchini and eggplant, do you force him to eat it? No. If you decide not to have pizza, does he force you to eat it? Don’t give in. Tell him he’s free to eat what he wants, you’ll make your own food. “No one told you to go on a diet “?!? He means, HE didn’t tell you to go on a diet. Practice saying, “you’re not…
  • Oh, and I’m wondering whether you’ve considered yoga? Does your gym offer yoga classes? Gentle stretching exercises might be helpful. Your joints might not like all the postures but just do what you can.
  • Well, you’ve identified a few goals: new wardrobe for cruise, improved health and a little “me time.” I’d think it’s very difficult to work out if you’re always in pain. I injured my back last week and the only exercise I can tolerate is walking. I’m not sure it’s motivation you need. You need the discipline to develop new…
  • I’m 58 and lost 30 pounds. I feel 20 years younger . Definitely more energy!
  • I agree that a restrictive diet is no good. There are no "bad" foods, just foods that are better choices for your body than others. I feel more energetic eating a 2-egg broccoli scramble than three pancakes, for instance. An egg is around 74 calories, if I remember correctly. Anyway, I paid more attention to eating…
  • So glad to see you consulted your doctor! Best of luck with everything you do.
  • I’m curvier than any partner I’ve had. I don’t care about any weight differential. I’m not going to shrink myself for anyone but me. I just don’t want to be so heavy that I can’t occasionally be on top.
  • I just tried to develop new habits. Sometimes I was motivated and sometimes I was not, but I’d act anyway. If I didn’t want to go to the gym, I put on my shoes and went anyway. I discovered I felt better afterwards. I added the Happy Scale app to my phone which was really helpful.
  • So sorry to hear about your losses. I can tell you that the Couch to 5K program is very good. I enjoyed making progress. I repeated Week 4, but there’s no shame in going your own pace! I loved that phone app, especially when the voice prompt said I could walk!!
