Welcome back scott. I'm one of those that has used MFP and lost over 100lbs (and im not done yet). Swimming and this forum have been a big part of my journey. But unlike you an many of the others here who have such wonderful advice I've never had any formal swim training/coaching.

Yeah like LR2 said when I was starting out 'just keep moving' was my goal. So I alternated front crawl, backstroke ...because on my back I can get my breath back. And really when I first started the backstroke lengths were very much 'slow easy' lengths. Eventually I got to the place where I was still catching my breath,…

1900 m in 62 minutes, mixed strokes, 15 sprint laps ...The new routine seems to be working well I'm feeling challenged, breathing harder ...

So I discovered something in the last couple of days implementing my new plan. With my standard rotation front, back, breast. And starting with an interval of 9th length sprint and decreasing or starting with 8th length sprint and decreasing. None of my sprint laps are front crawl! The sprint lap always ends up on a…

I'm very nearsighted, and goggles don't help. For me to even read the clock on the wall means stopping, taking off the googles, squinting, maybe waiting for a number to change ... it is at least a 30-45 second process. So I try to avoid any workout routine that involves timed intervals or timed rests

Woot! :o :) :* 1700m for me today,62 minutes, mixed strokes, 15 sprint lengths

ok so after 6 weeks of this routine with the drills my mile time only went down by one minute. Which was fairly disappointing. So I'm going to heed some of the wisdom here and make incorporating sprints the priority. I'm going to have to incorporate at least some counting. But hopefully I 'll see improvement. My current…

2000m in 61 minutes ...47 minutes mile ...my 'personal best' ...but after like 6 weeks of drills it only a 1 minute improvement, so I'm fairly unhappy...

Yeah, I've been using essentially a breast stroke, but you definitely have to be swimming 'down' as well as forward to keep from surfacing. I suspect this is less of a struggle for less buoyant peoples. And I'm thinking a breast stroke pull with a flutter kick might work better than the frog kick.

I've thought of doing something like this to keep me from stopping to catch my breath on the turns ...except instead of stacks at the edge of the pool I was thinking of dropping and picking up pennies from the bottom of the pool ...

Proud of you LR2 38 minutes breast stroke, 24 minutes front crawl kickboard

another good reason for me to listen to audiobooks instead of music during my swims. I kept wanting to sing along with the music ...which is a) a good way to drown and b) must sound really weird at pool side ...

Heh ...how can I not post now ...so yeah I totally recommend swimming for weight loss. I started out 6 months ago with a 20 year couch potato habit and having never had any formal swim coaching/team experience. But my diabetic nutritionist wanted me to start doing something every day to burn off excess glycogen in the…

I use the MFP calculator but assume a low/moderate workout and I still think it overestimates ...but doesnt matter so much since I don't eat them back I listen to my mp3 player so the earbuds are effectively also earplugs ...but the ones i like best are the 3-layer christmas tree shaped ones .. I do both ....but I've…

I couldn't do bilateral breathing when I first started posting to this forum either ...so just passing on the encouragement i've gotten from others. That particular piece of advice was the most useful to me, when I first started working on it I just felt overwhelmed. Trying to get my body to rotate the right amount,…

One other odd thing to note is that glucose in the blood doesn't JUST come from things you eat ...that is where it mostly comes from. But the body will release stockpiles of glucose into the blood under various conditions as well, most noticeably when your BGL drops too low too quickly. And also the 'Dawn Phenomenon'. I…

1) in theory you should test before anything in the AM ...the 'fasting' BGL number is supposed to give you an idea of how your body is behaving with your digestive system basically shut down. But in practical terms there are so few calories in black coffee, and meds take long enough to metabolize that it just doesn't…

Here are some articles that reference the parallel glucose uptake mechanism in contracting muscle tissue. The first two just confirm it's existence. The last actually explores the mechanism in greater detail, but the main conclusion seems to be that we don't entirely understand it yet.…

20 minutes backstroke kickboard, 41 minutes breast stroke pull buoy

76 ...new personal low for me ...

'Fasting BGL' isn't something you 'do' its just a measurement. It means your Blood Glucose Level after at least 8 hours without food or drink (usually measured first thing in the morning after sleep). Testing your BGL throughout the day, before and after meals gives you an idea how your body reacts to certain foods. Your…

in january my a1c was 11 ...last week it was 5.0 ...i'm down 106lbs and off my meds I concur with alot that was already said here 1) The disease is very individual. heavy testing on the front end to self-educate is important. When my father was diagnosed oddly enough fried seafood was a major trigger for his glucose. For…

yes you can ...I was prescribed 'half a pill' per day when I was still on metformin ...so actually told by doc and pharmacist to cut the pills.
