I agree with the PP on his/her Marcy brand comments. I have a Marcy squat rack. We looked at all the sports stores in town and purchased based on sturdiness more than price. We've been pleased with it so far.

I'd suggest just picking a local 5k that is walker friendly. You can do intervals and go at a comfortable pace. The only way to get comfortable is to just do it.

Weight gain and diabetes can be controlled by diet. Get a second opinion. Don't rely on random internet strangers.

Are you working with a coach? My gym has tri specific swimming lessons. You might need someone to watch and critique your form.

You can definitely lose weight without exercise. In addition to weight loss, I'd like to change the shape of my body which will require exercise.

I might try to bike one leg on it. I wouldn't try the whole thing without more cycling miles under my belt.

Have you googled running clubs in your area? Sometimes it's nice to run with a bigger group of people when you're starting out. You'll always be able to find someone going the same pace.

I bought a squat rack and weights from Scheels for about $700. I looked around at all the sports stores in the area, focusing more on sturdiness than price. I often workout at home when the kids are in bed and I can't leave the house. It's worth the investment to me.
