This puts it to bed for me.

I really like the emergen-c electrolyte mix. I take one per day during exercise. I did happen to also eliminate nuts (a huge part of my diet) which I later discovered can block the absorption of some electrolytes. Between these two changes, all of my muscle cramps disappeared.

First thing that pops up for me is that the data is just blindly connecting disease to animal/fat consumption. I think any low carb eater knows that combining fat with carbs is the issue. The author's data isn't about LCHF. I have a few books on logic fallacies he could borrow, but I suspect he knows that his data doesn't…

I think I first heard about this from Ggary Taubes and think that wabmester is right on. There are a few tests where we are starting to learn that the classic total numbers don't tell you much about what is really going on. Magnesium and cholesterol top the list.

There is (probably) no free ride here. I personally try to keep the same control of sugar substitutes as I do for sugar itself. I can assure you that the chemists that make "artificial" substitutes have the same morals as the scientists that process and package the "natural" sugar substitutes. None of them spend their days…

The unwich is really good. I do have to order 2 which is not a huge deal. It is a tax for being fit. I pay that tax a lot at fast food places as I always feel I need to order extra since I'm going to be picking through most of it to assemble my healthy meal.

Excellent update - great read! Congrats!

I stumbled upon a blog written by an athlete with crohns. He switched to a low carb diet and didn't have any more flare-ups. It might be worth a search. I did an exclusion diet called the virgin diet and discovered I don't tolerate lactose. I was shocked, but the diet had me avoid it for several weeks before trying it…

BBQ... order meats by weight. Second choice is a burger and I'll just take it like it comes and eat the inside with a fork and knife. Next on the list is breakfast where I can get eggs. That's about all that is fast.

Amazing transformation!

That burger combination is usually called a nooner except hash browns replace the avocado. They are awesome. I guess you made the keto version!

Very interesting! It was Quest bars that got the group of diabetics, if I remember correctly. They even had a person from the company do a q&a with them, but I don't think they learned too much more from that.

I count total. There's an interesting article on a forum for diabetics where a group of them ate a bunch of low carb protein bars and saw an insulin spike. They started questioning if we really knew everything about fiber that we think. I also don't trust food labels so I feel like total gives me a nice buffer of safety.…

Over time, changes in how you hold the tape should even out.

I spent about 9 months in maintenance and I pictured carbs as a lever. I knew I could lose weight keeping my carbs under 100. I slowly added carbs back until the weight loss stopped. I didn't care about calories or any other macros. Add carbs to gain weight. Subtract carbs to lose weight. What I failed to do is keep a good…

I know this thread is a few days old, but I use red palm oil. My wife also doesn't like coconut and we read about red palm oil in a diet book for people with food sensitivities. Do your own research - it might be a good alternative for you.

Body builders cut and bulk in endlessly repeating cycles because it is so hard to add muscle and burn fat at the same time. It is also hard to add muscle without also adding fat. The ideal cut is to maximize the inches you lose and minimize the pounds you lose. This means you are holding on to more muscle while you burn…

Sounds like an exciting trip and it motivates me to start thinking about a how much I spend on food. I like to go to the store every other day which makes the trips short and helps me develop a good relationship with the butcher.

After reading Gary Taubes 'Why We Get Fat' I don't feel a huge need to eat lots of veggies as long as I am eating grass fed meats. You don't get everything that way (ex folate), but I think you can cut down. Your idea of cutting them out is sound. Just add them back one at a time to isolate specific problem veggies. Also,…

I forgot one interesting topic for a blogger like yourself. Mark Sisson is all about controlling carbs to control weight and recommends a ceiling of about 150g of carbs per day. Most others put that number at 50 wanting you to go into ketosis. From what I have read, there may be a danger zone between 50 and 150. Within…

Some athletes follow CKD (mentioned above) while others stay low carb all the time (Volek/Phinney). I think the trend for endurance athletes is to follow Volek/Phinney (authors of The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Performance). The CKD crowd appears to be focused more on bodybuilding. Most of them cycle between…
