Yes you have to eat at a deficit, but the deficit is of primarily carbs and secondarily fats.

I presume you are an endomorph. Endomorphs [like myself] are very sensetive to carbs. Your carbs need to be very low for cutting, once you cut to your wieght goal, you can up them to a maintance level.
