3JAN17 Getting set up for the inside seam taping (glass and epoxy). In order to place the strip of material accurately, I need to see what I'm doing. The ends are difficult since my fat head won't fit through the hatches. I'm a security guy, so I have access to cameras and tech. I've set up a cheap CCTV camera to give me a…

I just changed my work stress too. This morning I put in my notice of intention to retire at the end of May. I'll be 61 with one heart attack behind me, and I have no intention of dropping dead behind this desk, stand-up or not. Just this morning a guy asked me to build a boat for him, so I think I'll make do just fine.…

Max beam is 21.9" at the 9' mark measured from the front. See the cut line in the software capture below. Very stable with not too much trade off in drag for stability. Made for kayak camping with decent cargo capacity.

2JAN17 Joining deck to hull finally. Fitted stems at ends, Lined up top and bottom, compressed and taped seams on outside. Did deck fitting part of skeg controls. Need to let this dry before finalizing. Next step is the much despised inside 'taping' of the seam with glass and resin. Cramped messy task. Now that the two…

Gym time and family dinner today, only a couple short periods in the shop. Got the hip plates installed, and poured end-fills to give structure for bow and stern carry lines. First batch was too soupy and started oozing out the tape on one side. Had a dutch boy thing going on for a while. The two mixes are cooking off now.…

Tahks BBee. I'm feeling great.

31DEC16 Lots of small detail work again, and waiting for epoxy cures makes for slow going at this stage. CF clamp set-up from last night. Cut to size, replenish stock. One to guide skeg cable into control box. Two to guide skeg cable away from cargo area. Hip plates, trimmed, epoxied again with graphite to colour, drying…

You're right! Thanks for catching that.

Intalled the skeg assebly in the hull. Epoxied the parts for the skeg control box which will be mounted to my left aft of the cockpit as shown below. 'Aft'. that's a term us nautical types use, along with 'Yarrr!', 'Avast!' and 'I didna ken she was your wife!'. full details at…

This is the skeg (retractable rudder) assembly. the control box mounts flush on the deck behind the cockpit. The slider extends and retracts the rudder.

Thanks. Got some work done on the boat today, and got my build log going on my new version of my website which should go live tomorrow. I'll forward a link to this boat build once it's hot if anyone wants to follow the progress there.

They love it. Getting lots of compliments. I told then once my looks started to go, I had to get good at something. Next project... Back to a long delayed project, finish my kayak for the spring.

In service already. We had an early morning call to start off Christmas eve. Tanker is out on a mutual aid call to a neighbouring department's fire.

The table went to it's forever home. Prepped for transport. it took three of us full size guys and two pickup trucks. The top fit the base perfectly, and the connection pins went in easily. It's so big, the guys have to text to communicate. Here's the writeup on our website. We have a big get-together lunch tomorrow, so it…

Thanks very much. I'll post some pics from the fire hall.

Another couple hours today. 76 to date. I'm going to figure on 80 hours to build one of these. Today I cleaned up the underside edge, touched up the finish along that area and a couple spots on the top, then prepared the dowel pins for attachment. I made them so the diameter was a bit loose where the fit into the apron…

Three hours between early this morning and tonight, 74 total. Put on final top coat. That's eight layers, * Pre-stain * Stain 1 * Stain 2 * Spar urethane 1 (Crest goes on) * Spar urethane 2 * Marine Epoxy * Spar Varnish 1 * Spar Varnish 2 Makes for a deep luster, with UV light protection. Dry time till Friday night when it…

Oops, caps lock, sorry. Anyway, got a layer of epoxy on. I've got my cure heat lamps going, and if the epoxy sets up overnight I hope…

Thanks marshal616. I'm hoping other fire departments will like it and commission a few more. I'm retiring in May and I'd love to make this sort of thing a bit of my part time work life.

Thanks HappyTrails7. Yes, it would make it tougher. I'll have to add a varnish layer on top of that for UV protection, but I think I'll go that route tonight, epoxy then a final varnish top coat tomorrow. It's due to go to the fire hall Friday night, so time's tight for these last layers to dry up hard. My full time job is…

The minwax recommends a light sanding at 320 between coats. I'm going to add a third coat tomorrow, and if not happy with the depth and gloss at that point I might do an epoxy layer. Crest went on tonight between urethane coats 1 and 2. 2 hours, 68 total so far.
-
Up at 05:30 putting first coat of urethane on. Tonight will do a light sanding at 320 grit for grip for the next coat, the crest goes on, then the second coat of urethane. Likely do a third coat after that tomorrow.

Got a second coat of stain on before bedtime.
