  • Last summer's jeans...this summer's jeans.
  • And we survived this accidental "off-trail" experience. That is my son in the picture trying to convince his German Shepherd to come down a granite cliff. I think a good rule of thumb is that if your German Shepherd isn't willing to go there, you probably shouldn't expect your 51 year old mother to do it. The last trail…
  • Made it to the top of the Manitou Incline.
  • Went to the Women's Fair last night and stopped at one of my friends' booth. She sells Plexus and had little forms at her table to register for a prize. One of the questions was "How much weight do you want to lose?" I was able to check the "less than 20 lbs" box. I had to gloat a little as we have been sharing our…
  • How when you come home from working out, and part of you just wants to sit down and have a drink, but part of you wants to hurry up and get in the shower so you don't have to smell your sweaty self any longer.
  • That sounds like fun! I've wanted to do that for years. Congratulations!
  • It took a lot of work, but I can finally do a proper sit-up...for the first time in 26 years. After three c-sections (the first was an emergency, so they just sliced through muscle) and two incisional hernia repairs (lots of mesh and staples!), I really didn't think that would ever happen again.
  • I was looking at pictures from my recent (and rare) night out with my daughter, and I realized that I have a genuine smile on my face...not an awkward "someone is taking a picture so I better try to smile" smile, but an honest "I'm having a wonderful time" smile. I actually VOLUNTEERED to be in pictures instead of coming…
  • This is why my kids won't do Fitbit challenges with me, anymore. I just refuse to let them win.
  • I'll take this as a NSV...I went to the Chamber's wine tasting fund-raiser, and people I have known for years didn't recognize me.
  • I could lose at 1500 when I started, but now if I want the scale to move, I have to stay below 1200. I don't think I eat any less, but I am always looking for ways to cut a few extra calories and have my little vices like sugar-free jello, and frozen juice pops that feel like a treat without adding a lot of calories.
  • I think the inherent limits of MFP sometimes sets inconsistent goals. For example, whether I plug in .5 lbs per week or 2 pounds per week, MFP sets my calorie goals at 1200. Logic dictates that I cannot eat the same number of calories to lose two pounds as to lose half a pound. I know that as long as I eat less than 1100…
  • I do almost all my walking and all of my jogging on my treadmill because it has a "soft" platform and sets a consistent pace. I would like to be able to do some of the area 5Ks, but wasn't sure how I would fare jogging on solid ground. I've had degenerative arthritis since my early 20s and have a lot of joint damage.…
  • I redid a room in my house for my exercise equipment. I put a giant mirror on one wall that cannot be ignored, and a big decal on the door that says "It's not how bad you want it; it's how hard you are willing to work for it." When I bought the decal, I thought it was a little pretentious, but now, it makes me smile.
  • My son has challenged me to climb the Manitou Incline with him this fall. I am excited to go do something I wouldn't have dreamed of doing six months ago. I've noticed that I push myself a lot harder now that I have a short-term goal of keeping up with him than I did when it was just an abstract "getting back in shape"…
  • I just moved up to a fitbit Charge HR...I can't believe I managed to live 51 years without this gadget. I have a fitbit One I wear to the office. If I had to pick just one, though, it wouild be the Charge. I discovered that I am a pacer...I logged almost two miles cross-examining two witnesses during a trial.

  • I think the best thing about this form of logging is that it creates a mentality of what you can have instead of what you can't have. If I have 300 calories left for the day, I know I can have some yogurt and a cookie, or a serving of ice cream, or some low fat chips and turkey and cheese rolled in lettuce...and if I want…

  • I made it up to three miles jogging, tonight. Not bad progress considering a week ago was the first time I made it a mile without stopping.
  • After I finished my 5 1/2 mile walk tonight, I decided to see if I could jog a ways. I have osteoarthritis in most of my joints from believing I was indestructible as a youth, and have not tried to jog more than a half mile or so in over 27 years. I actually made it over a mile! I know that doesn't seem like much to folks…
  • This group, with its humor and can-do attitude, has become my pick-me-up at the end of the day. One of the judges walked up and asked me if I had been losing weight, and looked a little worried. I told him that I had been trying, and he looked relieved. He said "at our age, I'm never sure whether to ask or not, because…
  • I was unimpressed to discover "bingo wings" harboring under my big shirts and sweaters...WHAT ARE THESE THINGS? Am I turning into a flying squirrel? I spend most of my exercise time on the treadmill because dropping pounds is more important to me right now than toning up, but those babies inspired me to grab a kettlebell…
  • I wore a sleeveless button-up shirt and shorts to our 4th of July celebration, and did not feel self-conscious. Last year, it was jeans and a baggy t-shirt, and I still felt self-conscious.
  • For the gals going through menopause, I just wanted to mention that it isn't necessarily the metabolism killer we've been led to believe. I put on a ton of weight right before menopause, and when I decided to start MFP, I expected to fight off every ounce. As long as I don't cheat and log everything, it comes off steadily…
  • I'm sure this isn't the "right" way to do it, but I set my daily calorie limit, and stick to it, regardless. If I am going to eat out or want to be able to have a drink or dessert, I cut calories earlier in the day to save those calories. And I never "eat back" my exercise calories, even if I walk 9 miles or spend the…
  • I promised my daughter when we both got to our goal size, we would go to a big city and I would buy us both new clothes. I hope that is enough to keep us motivated! In the meantime, I am rehoning my bargain-hunting skills, and when something gets too big for me, I pass it down to her. She likes getting the "new" clothes,…
  • Thanks, everyone. I'm so used to hating pictures of myself and feeling self-conscious about my appearance, it actually made me tear up a bit to see nice comments.
  • The hardest thing about gaining weight, especially when it impacts your health and energy, is how much life you miss out on because you feel self conscious, and don't FEEL like doing anything. I live in the country on several acres, so it is hard for me to imagine how I got to August without having a tan, unless I stayed…
  • "I went up and down so fast I blew through a few sizes."---LOL! I raided a closet of my old clothes and discovered plenty of 18s and plenty of 12s...but no 16s or 14s, which made me wonder what I wore to work through those sizes.
  • My "feel good" purchase yesterday was a gauzy cream swing tank with crochet trim like I had been searching for all spring. Found one for under $20 at Ross. It is always a great feeling to find that perfect top.
