Welcome all newbies, Totally agree w/mk2fit!! There is no "quick fix, or "diet" w/an end date; it is a lifestyle change. Exercise, track your food, and most important; don't deny yourself. Have the piece of pizza, cake, etc. (just once & a while & watch the portion size). Also agree w/Ann on the patience, consistency, and…

2012retiree, Gale is right; it's about the right macro (carbs, protein, fat) ratio that works for you (and not someone else;s diet). Also remember that it is not a "diet" with an end date; it is a lifestyle, so that after you have lost the weight it doesn't come back. You will fall off the wagon and have set backs (life…

Welcome Jamie and great job Ming!!

As long as you're not gaining or losing and are comfortable with the cals you're eating, I wouldn't worry about what some folks think/say. You have to do what works for you, not what others think you should be eating. B)

Grits, Welcome to our group (and I do live in the Middle GA area) Moved here in 1994 because of the 1st BRAC Dept of Def did; hubby & I met while on active duty w/the Navy. No snow, but the weather has gravitated from warm to cold to warm again. B) Sally, Welcome to our group as well. We're here to motivate and encourage…

sdpatterson, agree w/GaleHawkins on the sugar. I try to eat very little w/added sugar (there are a few exceptions). I cut back on sugar (natural & added) back in 2015; lost 11 lbs (I was aiming for seven or eight). Cut back on the overly processed foods and that helped cut back on it. Good luck on your journey. Saakura,…

Totally agree; awesome!! B)

I agree w/bbell, probably should be lightly active! I'm retired and not sure how many steps a day I do. I also workout 3 times a week (mostly weights w/some light cardio) and am eating around 1600 cals a day and have my activity level set for lightly active. I'm 5'3" and have trouble maintaining 114/15 eating that much.

I think you look fantastic and have done an outstanding job!! Congrats!! You are one of the few people who've hit on the fact that if you want a steak or a piece of pizza, eat and enjoy every bite. You are doing a great job of making your own eating plan that works for you, so many people miss that as well. Take it one day…

Nana, sorry to hear about the loss of your brother. You're right, things do happen for a reason, and I agree w/Trina that knowing that still doesn't make it any easier. Congrats on your weight loss; I know it wasn't easy. B)

All, Happy New Year!! Mk2, Congrats on your retirement!! I have a basic routine that I follow; no part time job yet, but may be one eventually. B)

Ditto! B)

Great goals; I can add don't obsess about any one thing, make changes you can live with (if you hate asparagus or broccoli, etc. don't eat it) and ensure you have treats along the way (cake, pizza, cookies, etc.). Make the changes slowly and add exercises you enjoy (once the doc gives you the OK). It's a journey not a…

A little bet of everything; just watch the portion sizes. And if it doesn't taste good (or you don't like it)Eat what you like to eat and when you reach your goal you're more likely to maintain it.

CMNVA, Don't be afraid of maint. Instead of jumping directly to 1600 cals a day, start by adding abt 100 and see how your body reacts. Keep that for a week or so, then add more. Also, if you start adding weights to your workouts you should be able to add some muscle, which will enable you to eat more.

@Eleted, Agree w/Nana!! Been retired for two years now; have a basic routine that I follow. Haven't felt led to volunteer somewhere yet; visit a local gym three days a week, and have my house cleaning projects lined up, so pretty much stay busy. Enjoy!!

Nana, Sorry to hear about your brother; he is on my prayer list. I don't think you're being selfish about taking care of yourself; you need to be healthy so you can take care of him. Hugs your way!!

Snow is pretty to look at (makes beautiful pics) and play in. Grew up in South. Cal and it would snow in late Dec - Feb. You could go see & play in it, then leave. Although I was assigned to Naval Station Keflavík, Iceland twice and had to deal w/it then. B)

Agree w/cwolfman (eating well & exercising); I'm retired now so not subjected to all the "goodies" folks bring into work. Eat well most of the time and don't worry abt the few days I don't. B)
-
Many thanks; you (and everyone else) do the same!! B)

Agree w/folks who basically quit "dieting" and made up an eating plan that fit their lifestyle. I did the same two years ago; only log now to keep track of how much I'm eating. I feel that it's a lifestyle not a project or diet w/an end date. I eat cake, cookies, pizza, etc., but not every day--eat veggies (usually frozen…

I agree w/all the above!! Love reading the posts and seeing that we all struggle w/some kind of issue. We are all in this together and the support has been wonderful!! Love all my MFP friends! Happy Thanksgiving to all! B)

I started in 2015, so this is my second year. I started because wanted to drop abt sever or eight lbs; ended up losing abt 11 or so (and I'm 66). I have also been able to gain back some (not all) lost muscle; even after breaking my wrist last Dec (was out of commission for four months). Agree w/mk2fit, eat what you love…

Agree w/DragonGirl & Lounmoun; go ahead and start. Just eat smaller portions of hi cal foods and eat your regular food plan most of the time. Also agree w/iofred, it should be a lifestyle, not just a project or diet w/an end date. You can do it!! If you mess up, forget it and move on; you only fail if you quit. Good luck.

Mine is to not really deny myself; just to eat larger portions of protein (i.e. turkey, ham, etc.) and smaller portions of the other stuff. That way won't feel deprived and end up pigging out on it. It's that time of year and it will be harder to say no to fattening food and treats. Feel it's better to eat a little and be…

I'm in the same boat you're in. Went to doc to make sure there weren't any issues (there wasn't any). But a friend (and trainer) at the gym I belong to explained that I was lifting weights and adding muscle. Muscle and fat are both metabolically active; muscle is just more so than fat and needs/uses more calories. So, the…

I must have been a weirdo; I went into Navy boot camp @ 134 (max for my height) and left 8 weeks later weighing 115. And I didn't miss on the cals; coke, coffee, pancakes, eggs & bacon for breakfast--lunch & dinner were pretty much the same so not sure why I lost the weight. Some folks are different; could be that had 3…

Was in the Navy myself (although a long time ago) and at the time they would let you do measurements if you were over the weight standards (and could pass the fitness test). But I agree w/trigden on the 1600 cals a day and mostly muscle.
-
Try adding some weight training (if you are able) to what you are already doing; it will help re-build some (but not all) of the muscle you have lost. We lose muscle as we age, so keeping (and adding) as much muscle as you can will help you lose and once you're at goal, maintain your weight. B)

Eleted, Do as much outside as I can; it's been 90 + here since March (and over 11" behind in rain), so too hot to exercise outside. Since it has started to cool down go for walks in the morning before it gets too warm. I live about 90 miles south of Atlanta (and a lower elevation) so it is warmer here on average. I do…
