  • Agree w/mk2fit! And don't forget to watch the added sugar (in all its forms); we eat more than we think we do!
  • Totally awesome; great job and keep it up. Be mindful that you will fall off the wagon occasionally; just get back up and keep going!!
  • Welcome newbies! Been here abt three years and in maintenance. Older than most of you; do weights three days a week (unless life gets in the way). Anyway, my problem is finding clothes that fit (I'm short for starters) and really don't want to dress like Aunt Bee and don't want to dress like I'm 25 either. Just remember,…
  • Been doing weights for several years (and I'm well past 56)! Totally agree with the lifting of weights; I do full-body three times a week at the local parks & rec fitness center with a short (15-20 min) walk on a treadmill.
  • Still here too! Still maintaining; lost more than I wanted to and my doc wants me to put on a few more lbs. Have added a few things I quit eating back into the diet, just don't want to over do it. Too skinny doesn't look good when you get older anyway.
  • I'm still here too; basically maintaining so only log on (using my phone most of the time) to keep up w/buds (and their progress). Had some issues starting around Thanksgiving that I'm still trying to get over; but still in better shape than some so I count my blessings. I will still check in periodically to see how…
  • Me too; just use my phone to log on most of the time so don't check in here.
  • Agree w/solieco1!
  • Most chain restaurants list their cals on line; just type in the name of the restaurant. Non-chain, I would use my best guess based on what I ate and MFPs listings. Good luck,
  • 53elliebell, You'll make it! Remember it is a journey, not a "diet" w/an end date; you'll have bumps along the way (just get back on track). We are all here for each other! Good luck on your journey!
  • NewBetter, The weights will help; although they may slow the weight loss progress slightly. With weights you will be replacing fat with muscle (which takes up less space), so your measurements will probably change while your weight may not change. But, you will be getting smaller. Also, your form with the weights is more…
  • Agree w/the above; you don't want to under eat for your body's needs. You may want to re-adjust your cals up some (depending on your height, etc). Read on some fitness sight that you don't want to set your cals too low when first starting on a program; doesn't leave much wiggle room when you get closer to your goal and…
  • Love the weights too; go heavy as possible! B)
  • Start w/weights that bring you close to failure in the 8 to 12 rep range. Don't try to start off too heavy; proper form is more important than the weight. Check out Bodybuilding.com, they have instructions for different exercise so that you do them correctly. Good luck!!
  • I don't think God appreciates our complaining; remember what happened to the Israelites when they were complaining about the manna; He sent them quail to eat, but sent leanness to their souls. I know it's hard sometimes not to complain (it's so easy to do); but need to remind ourselves that we could be worse off.
  • Sheliftsweights, I do a full-body three times a week; I use a local parks & rec facility that has mostly machines (w/some free weights; price is right). I try to rotate the exercises/increase the weight (when I can) so my body doesn't get into a rut. There are lots of programs out there, pretty sure you can find something…
  • For those ladies that can; you should be lifting weights. Moved from one state to another and had to find a new doc that accepted Medicare (found a good one). Anyway he wanted a bone scan done; blew the lab tech away! Was the best bone scan I've ever had (and I'm 67). I do full-body three times a week w/as heavy as I can.…
  • Agree w/all the above!!
  • FattieBabs, I wouldn't let people push me past what I know I can do. If you're healthy and don't have issues push yourself, but if you have back, hip, etc. issues you know what you can and can't do. Just because something isn't cut & bleeding doesn't mean it doesn't hurt. I have issues w/my back and know how to and not to…
  • I agree w/Ann; I too err on the gung-ho workout side, but do know where my limitations are (Im 67).
  • babbsann, I agree w/Ann and would like to add the following: You're never too old to make changes and lose the weight. I would say make small changes (that you can live with) over time rather than trying to follow a "diet" plan like Weight Watchers or ditch all the foods you love to eat (eat them, but in moderation). Once…
  • Congrats to you and your hubby on the changes. I know a couple of other folks on here that use the ketogenic diet. I believe whatever works for you and don't judge. My hubby was diagnosed a couple of years ago w/type II and uses a low-carb (no potatoes, bread, grains, etc.) diet. And BTW, the Sugar industry sponsored the…
  • Skyweigh, Great job!! Thing of it is to make small changes you can live with and not try to change everything at once. It's a journey, not a "diet" w/an end date. Hope you & your hubby are doing better.
  • ColleenRuns, You might want to add weight training to what you are already doing. It will help w/retaining your muscle (which burns calories) and you may be able to add some back (you lose muscle as you age). Start out small and do exercises you enjoy; don't worry about how much you can lift, just make sure you use correct…
  • mptomey, I'm a retired Federal employee and know exactly what you mean.
  • dsboohead & luluinca, I'm originally fm lala land (yes, the city); left there long time ago and now live in South Eastern US. It is struggling to make it to 40 today (only made it to 33 yesterday), pretty cold here. I can relate to the warm Christmas' and New Years! Just take it one day at a time and if you ate it, you ate…
  • 19teri, Wouldn't worry abt trying to lose over the holidays; just try to maintain and enjoy some of the eats (w/o going overboard too much). Keep up w/the exercising and as much as possible, your normal routine. That way you will not quite as stressed and enjoy yourself more. It's all abt a lifestyle, not a "diet" with an…
  • Went cold turkey a long time ago w/the sugar; now only use regular 1/2 & 1/2 (tried, but don't really care for it black). Was using non-dairy creamer and finally decided it wasn't healthy so went to 1/2 & 1/2. Was going to use low-fat version (there isn't any) and checked out the non-fat version---it had added sugar so,…
  • debtay, Yep, know exactly what you mean!! But don't deny yourself too much; just have smaller portions of the "treat" enjoy yourself, and eat like you normally do (healthy) most of the time. That way you're less likely to binge. B)
