Wow, so glad to see this thread active again. So now I'm 60 and have been here for almost 4-1/2 years. I lost 70ish pounds and have kept them off, plus or minus a couple for 3-1/2 of those years. I don't really log much anymore - mostly if I've found something new. I suppose what I've learned the most here is veggies, veggies, veggies and exercise!4

What an excellent idea for the flavored balsamic vinegar for dressing!! I'm having a salad today for lunch, and just may try to find some!!
My dairy obsession is cheese....but I've been really trying to cut back. I portioned out 1oz in little cups for a quick snack.....if I don't I could eat triple or quadruple that amount, lol.....

I'm 53 and going through menopause now and can't seem to lose a pound. eating 1200 cal diet but can't exercise due to a herniated disk. I can walk though but it's freezing outside lol - I can't imagine that faithfully sticking to a 1200 cal diet does not let me lose weight - this sucks. I even got my thyroid tested - perfect. I am at a loss. If I can't lose a pound now what's going to happen to me on the other side of menopause? good luck with your struggle and please let me know what works!2

I hope you can get some good advice/treatment for your disk problem --- I know what that's like! As well as the weather challenge. For me, I know that getting outside is not a good option if there is a lot of ice/slippery snow --- but if it is just cold --- layer up a bit, and keep your walks short. A little is better than none. If getting out or doing "formal" exercise is not possible, then do your best to avoid sitting (fitbit is good for that, with reminders to move).
One does not automatically gain weight on the other side of menopause, so don't let that worry you. Do your best to eat according to your hunger and nutritional needs --- 1200 calories sounds like a bare minimum. All will be well, although your weight loss goals may be stalled. We are building our life and our bodies continually and menopause is another stage.
If I were to advise myself back then it would be to devote some time to meditation or other preferred methods of mindfulness or stress relief.

@kimiraryray. ..try you Tube indoor walking exercise videos. There are many levels and they are a great alternative during the long winter months.1

@kimiraryray- try eating as many fruits and veggies as you can within that amount- You would be surprised esp. the low calorie veggies such as spinach, cabbage, string beans, etc- You can have been bowls for less than 100 calories etc. whole foods are the way to go when you only have liited amount of calories. Also you might change what you have set your loss t on mfp- I cahnged mine to lose .05 a week and I now have more calories to work with.1

@kimirayray So, I exercise to youtube videos when the weather is really bad. BUT, snowshoeing is great as is just walking in the snow. I even run in the snow. No excuses just because winter. There are so many things you can do. Look for jessicasmithtv, lesliesansone, on youtube. While both are great for any age group, you may find one is a little easier on the brain than the other

@kimirayray agree with @debtay123 about changing or at least checking your stats in MFP. How tall are you and how much do you have to lose? Maybe you've set too aggressive a loss for your height and current weight. You want to fuel your daily activities even though you're not able to exercise very strenuously.0

Posting for my wife.
She turned 60 in September.
Started learning how to swim in November.
Today she swam 1.1 miles. Her personal best.
It is never too late to learn and love swimming.17 -
Unexpected three pound loss this week puts me well over the Quarter of My Body Weight Lost goal. Yay, me!
Less than five pounds to normal BMI. Then onwards to dumping on this swim ring I’m carrying.14 -
Began at 228.3 lbs 66 days before my 60th birthday.
Currently 151 lbs 10 days before my 63rd birthday.
Eating an avg of 2100 calories per day
& burning an average of 680 per day in my Apple Watch.
5’8.5”
I weigh myself daily, compare monthly averages.
Track all food every day & have since Sept 25, 2017.
Walk >10K steps per day and over 1 hr of exercise daily. Dr said to, so I do. Also yoga (easy) and Pilates. Looking into Zumba & water aerobics currently.
The secrets to weight loss for me were small goals & a small deficit (never hungry), weekly small habit changes, preplanning/prepping food, large breakfast that is the same each morning, walking every day in late afternoon, and NOT EATING OUT.
Foods that helped: raw unsalted nuts (weighed), 82% dark chocolate (weighed), Ezekiel 4:9 Sesame bread, unsalted peanut butter (measured to the gram), frozen veggies, nonfat decaf lattes, radishes, arugula, Pink Lady, Fuji, And Honey Crisp Apple’s, lean pork chops, berries!!
You can definitely do it. Many of us have. Slow & steady prepares you to succeed at maintenance, which is the Holy Grail🏆17 -

Hi although you say your thyroid has been tested - has it been tested for autoimmune thyroid - i was in a terrible mess for 5 years - all the thyroid tests kept coming back normal - then finally i was in such a bad state my dr tested me for antibodies - dadah - i have Hashimoto disease - got medication and symptoms went aware - not saying it is easy to still lose weight - but it is possible1 -

Hi ladies, so glad to meet everyone. I am 58 years old. I lost 78 lb with MFP from Sept 2016 to Sept. 2018. Then I started exercising really diligently with a trainer and lost another 25 lb. Even though I still needed to lose a further 20 lb., I finally felt better mentally than I had in years. However, I had a really difficult personal life situation that set me back in March 2018. I have gained back that 25 lbs and I am starting to inch towards gaining back some of the 78lbs. I have started back with MFP logging everything. I cannot afford another round of personal training and I know that the combo of scheduled workouts and food accountability were the thing that worked for me. My goal is to start to feel more in control with my food choices and to then get back to the gym on my own.16

So happy to find this thread! I'm 61, relatively fit but just above healthy BMI and frustrated at my own backsliding. Lost, gained, lost again, gained again the same 20 lbs, and it's totally due to hiding from the reality what I can put in my mouth. So I'm back, fresh start and committed to making this what I know it needs to be- a lifetime commitment. Nice to find so many cool 60-ish people, and thanks for sharing your successes and frustrations!

Sounds to me like you're finding the right direction again. I have also had episodes in my life where I respond to difficult circumstances by comfort eating, sofa surfing and beating myself up for letting things slip. I like your step by step approach, change one small thing, see how it goes - food accountability - logging if that is what it takes is a great step.

I gained 25 lbs last winter and in the summer I finally lost 30 lbs, I am so happy about it but so scared I will put it back on again. This time I looked at the emotional side of it, not just calories so I am hopeing that will help. I journaled a lot about my feelings and it helped a lot! Feels good to wear my clothes again!8

So much inspiration here. I am reminded that this journey is a journey. Like all journeys it has ups downs stops and starts. Sounds corny but I have to stay on the road to reach the destination. Thanks to all for your support.6

The dietician told me to bump up my calories, that I’m probably losing too fast. I am so full right now I can barely move. And I’ve already mapped out tomorrow and it looks like a flipping feast day or something! I can’t believe how much more I get for an extra 200 calories. It’s insane. Today I had a couple of slices chopped bacon on my giant dinner salad with a couple of slices of halloumi. It felt so wantonly luxurious!8

I have also been told to pick up my calories but to cut back on days when I don’t train. I train 6 days per week, generally burning 3-500 calories per day through purposeful exercise. I say purposeful because I’m much more active in my everyday life than I was 9 months ago when I was at my heaviest, least fit condition. Purposeful means I’m running, cycling, circuit training or weight lifting2

When I changed my mfp from to lose1.0 a week to lose.05 a week, I gained an extra 200 calories too. I could not believe how much better I feel with the extra calories and I have just decided to go slower and be happy with any loss that I have.10
