Absolutely fantastic.

Great advice above, and I experienced the same think. Volek's study of cyclists retested a 1 month and their performance was essentially unchanged to improved in 1hr max effort testing. Best luck, jpditano! Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Performance is a really good read!

It has been a while since I have been on here, and apparently I missed some fireworks! I hope my comment about calorie restriction (#2 above) doesn't strike a nerve! It wasn't meant to, and is in line with a few other remarks in this thread about making sure you are giving your body enough nutrients to function…

I wish you the best of luck- 1. It took me just at 3 full weeks to have a similar energy level and exercise tolerance upon starting keto. I probably could have been smarter with electrolyte replacement- but I still think you are way early to expect much "good feeling." 2. You are calorie restricting AND carb restricting,…

Thanks for your time

@FIT_Goat : didn't mean to touch a nerve. Not sure what the "protein myth" is, and I don't know your physical parameters. I'm glad that eating 200g of protein doesn't affect you, and I'm not implying I think that is bad for everyone. My point (not a myth) is that for a 5'3 female with a lean body mass of 70kg, eating…

Very helpful. Thanks and good continued success!

I eat a lot of vegetables- with every meal. I think this helps avoid some of the GI side effects, (constipation, etc) that is often seen with the "low carb" diet criticism. I seldom eat these vegetables without fat (butter or olive oil). This is why I am so interested in "carnivor" experiment- in following success of the…

You just described me to a "T." The Art and Scienceof Low Carbohydrate Living- Dr. Phinney and Dr. Volek. This book completely changed my perspective on clinical nutrition, forced me to re-read earlier studies on fat- heart hypothesis. It made me reconsider the Atkins- low carb approach, and realize that protein excess was…

Thanks for the reply. Knowing the possibility of some excess protein to be converted to glucose (and raising insulin levels), it would seem easy to overeat protein, even if maintaining healthy ratios, and impede weight loss in the long run. I will be very interested to follow everyone's progress, but it would really help…

I have a question for the group: are you monitoring grams of protein consumed each day, or eating to satiety? If you are eating to satiety, how do you keep from eating protein to the point that you raise insulin levels? Do you monitor ketones? Thanks for your replies.

The medical studies that compared low carb dieting to low fat dieting used ONLY calorie restriction in the low fat group. Meaning, the low carb group ate to satiety, limiting themselves to 20g of carbs daily while the low fat group had ceilings of 1200-1400 kcal in addition to limiting fat intake by grams. My experience is…

10% : generally this is around 50g net carbs. (usually an extra 25 in fiber each day on average).

You may be waivering in and out of nutritional ketosis. If you eat sugar and it goes away, I'll bet you are blunting your body's production of glucagon which causes many of the same symptoms up front that you are describing. I certainly think some electrolyte replacement is a great idea, but after doing that, I would not…

miralax over the counter is excellent. this is a commonly reported problem on this diet. Mag Citrate is another good suggestion. I would recommend avoiding stimulant laxatives (ex lax, senna, senekot, dulcolax, etc)

Jerry- are you measuring yourself? Ketosis generally is muscle sparing, so if you really are exercising steady, you may be gaining some muscle while you consume fat stores. Rather than weight loss, you may notice neck/ face/ thigh/ arm circumference followed by waist line shrinking. I would also love to know your insulin…

It is interesting that on the day you felt poorly (more specificially, early that afternoon) you had just finished consuming foods that were rather high in carbohydrates and glycemic index. You may have experienced an insulin spike that precipitated symptoms as the blood sugar from that meal was dealt with and then dropped…

You have some good advice already, and welcome! You are not alone in your health problem, and you are certainly on the right track. I think you will find you can be more liberal in your calorie intake, provided your carb intake remains low (your current target of 50g NET seems a good start). Raising your fat intake to `70%…

I'm not sure I have the answer to this question. I have seen a number of men simply drop carbs, add fat, moderate protein, and drop weight. I have seen (or heard) of many women who drop carbs to similar levels, and really struggle. I am aware that leptin levels (which drop as insulin drops) can signficantly affect sex…

Hi everyone. I am new to this forum, new to LCHF eating, and very intrigued by the differences between men and women with this diet. I am a Gastroenterologist, and have been working with a number of severely overweight patients using nutritional ketosis to help address their severe insulin resistance. It does seem, just…

I have been doing low carb for about 6 weeks to treat pre-diabetes. While I would have described myself as "athletic", I didn't have near the male physique as some of the posters above! I don't think this diet is for everyone, but if you are overweight or obese, and especially if you are overweight with insulin resistance,…
