I happen to like the Ghost 7 myself. I require a neutral shoe for over- and under-pronation. Neutrals keep me balanced. I agree with the above posters that you should definitely speak with a running shoe expert. If there's a particular shop you can get these shoes from, go there and try them on. The wrong type of shoe for…

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try the stove-top method. Perhaps it's not made for small quantities.

30 pounds since last fall. Still working on building muscle/getting stronger. Logging/weighing my food and being honest has made all the difference. Like others have said, individual genetics will determine how fast and from where your weight loss occurs. Best of luck!

I just posted today that I have met my goal weight but still have belly and thigh flab. The recommendation is to concentrate on building muscle and strength through heavy lifting. I'm certainly no expert but this is what I intend to do (I started lifting a month or so ago). I'd go through the board and find posts about…

Haha! Love it...that's what I am, a skinny marshmallow! I'm pretty lanky and don't have a lot of "meat" on my extremities, so I will go for the heavy lifting. I'm so new to it that it's still like operating in a foreign land. Can you recommend any programs on YouTube or elsewhere that will help me do the right combination…

Definitely go to a store and have an employee watch you walk and run. At a reputable store, the employees should be able to help you determine your footfall and strike pattern and recommend the best shoe. Based on your description, you are probably a heel striker, like many runners. But you should determine whether you…

Are your workouts fun? Do you enjoy cooking/preparing your own food? I'd suggest finding a fun way to go about it so it feels like less of a chore. That's a lot of the problem with motivation; if it feels like work, we tend to lose interest. Find fun activities that couple as exercise (sports, walking, hiking, playing…

I guess it all depends on your style and genre preference. If I gave you suggestions from my 80's playlist, you'd probably go "what the what?" By the way, what's Fallout Boy? I know what a fallout shelter is.

Love the feeling of a well-earned PR! Congrats, that's terrific! Now set a new goal and keep on movin'!!!

I second visiting a running store. There are so many brands and types of running shoes and it's important to get the type for your particular strike and footfall pattern. A knowledgeable running store employee will take the time to watch you run/walk and can help you find the right shoe. And yes, expect to spend a bit on a…

Land however your foot naturally lands. Trying to change your footfall pattern may cause injury. There's really not a lot of evidence that shows that a particular strike (what part of your foot hits the ground first) is better than another. I'm a heel striker and I also under-over pronate (the way your foot rolls, either…

I try to do things that are fun so that I'm motivated to actually do them. So in addition to the gym (where I strength train, do the elliptical because it feels like a moonwalk, and also swim), I take walks, sign up for road races, hike, play tennis (even alone - find a wall and hit the ball against it), ride my bike, and…

Agreed; for those concerned about the chlorine, consider what normal table salt is - sodium chloride.

I believe that the current consensus is that eating under 1500 calories for a male is not healthy/optimal. Remember you have to fuel your body to build muscle. Is 2090 your calorie allotment for your current weight loss goal? If so, you should be eating at that level. What did you put in to MFP to get to the 2090?

It may be sad, but it's normal. I'm a distance runner and sometimes I struggle to get up and go running. Don't beat yourself up. Are there other forms of exercise you can use to alternate with gym trips, in order to keep things interesting? Can you walk, run, hike, swim, bike, play tennis, do workouts at home (there are…

Re: the undies thing - holy cow, YES! I thought I got a bum package (pun definitely intended) because my favorite brand/style isn't fitting quite right. Can you say wedgie city? I guess I'll have to do some trial and error to find a new fit! Not complaining, though!

Welcome and congrats for taking the steps to make the changes you want. It's difficult when genetics isn't on your side, but the odds can be overcome and you will be so much better for losing the weight. There is some terrific advice on this site and very knowledgeable people. I've been on this site for a few months trying…

I had IBS/diarrhea for years and lost so much weight because I was afraid to eat anything for fear of setting up camp in the bathroom. Mine was stress-related and also somewhat dairy related; I had to learn what I could and could not eat to control symptoms. Because I had the diarrhea type, I increased fiber. I also tried…

No-no articles: anything that says "never eat this to lose weight" or "foods dietitians tell you never to eat." A respectable dietitian will only tell you to "never" eat something if you are allergic to it.

Genetics determines where belly fat accumulates and where it will come off with calorie deficit and exercise. Fat loss starts with your eating habits and a good plan for a calorie deficit. See the "So You Want A Nice Stomach" thread in the General Weight Loss and Dieting Help section; better advice cannot be found anywhere…

Don't think of exercise as a chore that you have to do. Find things that are fun and that you'll look forward to doing. Think about your interests and look for ways to incorporate exercise. If you like the outdoors, take a walk on lunch break or just after work; if you are watching TV, grab a set of weights or resistance…

I run. I love to run. My mind wanders while my legs go. It's pure freedom. My favorite is going to road races and meeting like-minded people. I've got a few half marathons scheduled for later this year. I've been trying to incorporate more weight lifting into my cross training days. I also like to swim and bike. I pretty…
