  • I broke the medial sesamoid on my left foot some time ago but never knew it. It healed poorly and is now arthritic, along with my big toe joint (hallux rigidus). I am a runner but my foot does a good job telling me when I need to rest it. During those times, I swim. Elliptical or stationary bike sounds like a good idea;…
  • I'll mention it at the next appointment. I'm the one who recommended it and asked to try it. I do my homework and also work in the healthcare field.
  • Yah, I have heard that too. I don't like taking meds anyway, so just to be safe I stopped it. Plus being a diuretic, it wreaked havoc with hydration.
  • I didn't look at your diary, but I have a condition where I don't digest a lot of things properly, like whole grains, cruciferous vegetables, legumes... I have had Celiac ruled out by blood work, but I still get a lot of bloating and painful gas buildup. I just found a digestive enzyme today at CVS that I'm going to try.…
  • Judging from your replies, I'm think it's not enough sleep and probably just not fueling adequately overall. Oh and heat wave...yes! 91 degrees in 'ol New England today! Crazy.
  • Your other option could be to see a registered dietitian, to ensure that you are actually understanding and consuming the best foods for a wholesome, balanced diet. If you're not eating to fuel your workouts properly, you won't be able to train as hard or have the stamina to do it for very long. Get a nutrition check-up…
  • Keep in mind that the varying opinions on carbs are often influenced by a person's physical activity and/or sport. As an endurance athlete, carbs are extremely important in my daily diet, which can consist of anywhere between 350 - 650 grams of carbs per day. If I do not maintain a steady influx of carbs into my body, I…
  • You need carbs to function properly throughout the day. Too many carbs does not contribute to weight gain; too many calories does. Start your day with a wholesome breakfast consisting of mostly carbs and some protein. If there's anything you should think about reducing, it's fat intake, like pats of butter, coffee…
  • Thanks for all the advice and suggestions, I sincerely appreciate it. After some consideration, I'm going to look for a different type of job. I like what I do, but it's not a career. I've just ended a 20-year career in EMS so I'm in limbo right now and not adhered to any particular type of work. I might even get a…
  • I'm not so sure there are harsh words but there are useless words. Telling someone to just not do something is useless; I think if we all just didn't do something, perhaps we wouldn't be here sharing our journey. As a few pointed out, it's a deep struggle to just avoid this or just walk away from that. Temptation is strong…
  • Thank you to those who have given me practical advice. Much appreciated. Simply telling me to "avoid the crap" is not helpful; I'm well aware I should avoid it, but the struggle is all to real. I struggle every minute I'm there to avoid it!! Thanks to those who shared their struggle. I like the idea of standing up at least…
  • Here's my favorite salad: baby spinach and green leaf lettuce (amount is up to you); peeled & sliced carrots, sliced cucumbers, low sugar Craisins, and light raspberry vinagrette dressing; I alternate putting tuna or grilled chicken breast on it.
  • If you don't feel you're getting enough nutrition from what you're consuming, a daily multivitamin is okay.
  • A lot of it is dictated by your genetics. The belly is often the first place fat accumulates and the last place it gets removed. I'm 5-10 and 145 pounds and look like I'm wearing a spare tire, even though clothed normally I look super skinny. Every woman in my family on my mom's side has had that belly pouch. I'd have to…
  • Good for you!! Having a goal is a great way to stay motivated. Have fun and enjoy the run!
  • I'm more of an experienced runner but just wanted to stop by and say great job, and when you do start running, don't do too much too soon. That's what ends up burning out a lot of new runners. Find a good walk-run interval program and build on that; something like Couch to 5K or the Jeff Galloway programs are terrific. Go…
  • Concentrate on your caloric intake, not on your workouts.
  • Read the sticky posts at the top of each topic category. Those will tell you everything you need to know.
  • Wow, awesome advice here. I'm running my first full in October.
  • 5-10...a lot depends on where your fat congregates. I have very long legs but a very short torso, so the fat that lives in my abdominal area shows up quickly because there's not a lot of room. Five pounds is a great start; YOU may not see the results because you see yourself every day, but go by how your clothes fit. Don't…
  • I take Powerade Zero, any flavor, fill a cup half full with it, and fill the rest with water. Sometimes the Powerade is too sweet for my taste so diluting it makes it better (makes it last longer too).
  • Mmmm, love them. High in cals but very filling.
  • Go online and look up The Run Experience. Tons of great cross-training and strength training videos, plus very helpful drills, all based on running. The videos are free.
  • The variety of music I have on my iPod, and the fact it's on shuffle so I never know what's next; the things I see during a run...beautiful farms, fields, animals, flowers; the knowledge that I'm getting stronger daily, the food I know that's waiting for me afterward, the satisfaction I know I'll feel crossing that finish…
  • Read ALL the sticky posts on the MFP forum. There seem to be 20 questions like this posted every day. The majority of the time it's just impatience and unrealistic expectations (brought on by fad diets that make it sound normal to lose 10 pounds a week). Just go read those stickies now. And when someone posts the flow…
  • Training for a half on May 29. Doing 7 later today. Just started taking Creatine; I've noticed a difference in my leg soreness - much less. However my legs have also started feeling like concrete. Don't know if there's a correlation to that and the Creatine use. Lots of running buddies use Creatine.
  • I've had acne all my life and continue, though to a lesser extent thanks to about 4 rounds of Accutane -- my miracle drug. I've limited dairy too and had some success. I love Greek yogurt though, and have 2 per week. About two days after eating greek yogurt I notice an increase in breakouts. If I don't have any in a week,…
  • Clear urine can be a sign of overhydration, which is potentially dangerous too. If you find you're forcing yourself to drink water, you're probably overhydrating. Drink when you're thirsty, drink during/after exercise, you should be fine.
  • I'm using the Six Star Creatine X3 powder, which includes BCAAs. Since it's a powdered drink mix, I sip it slowly after a workout. No stomach issues so far. I'm taking about 6g daily to start. It's also pretty delicious!
