An argument can be made by a more experieced individual that Vo2 max can definitely be a useful metric for endurance sports.

From what I understand, the VO2 max is a genetic factor. However with training it can be increased 15 - 20% and some individuals may never even tap into their true VO2.

Aww chin up OP :) Do not be discourage but instead work harder toward your goals so that you can enjoy some days when there is a free food. Try out some cycling on the cardio bike. In 1 hour you can burn anywhere from 500 - 1000 calories relative to the intensity you put up.

Amazing all the best of luck. During your training mix it up with some interval training, hill train and Long steady state sessions as well. Pacing is crucial so take a look at that as well! Find a pace that you can sustain without bonking or hitting the wall.
