I quit sugar but had a heck of a time after the first few days. I actually used a program called the 21 Day Sugar Detox There is my review if you're interested. It really helped me a lot.

I lost over 120 lbs by just cutting my carbs and exercising. However, I've hit a plateau now and am starting to count calories.

I have a polar heart rate monitor so I get a good idea of how many calories I've burned during a workout. Once I got the heart rate monitor I realized that the gym/mfp was off by a good bit.
