  • Cough..cough..Arthur Lydiard..cough ...cough.....sorry, excuse me, feeling a bit under the weather. If OP had already done one before, even years before then I'd say pack up the stroller and make a day out of it just trying not to get hit by the street sweeper. Enjoy, take pictures, be annoying to the other runner and so…

  • Few things I've learned from experience. 1. Don't inhale a huge meal of carbs the night before a long run. Smaller meals a few days out are just fine IF you are going to carb load your long runs. 2. Wake up at least 2 hours before your run and eat something small immediately. Gets things a moving before you get out there.…

  • Oldest son will be 3 in July and his younger brother just turned 7 months. Oldest loves watching me race and is excited whenever I can bring him home a medal, wears it for the rest of the day and runs around with it (kinda makes me push harder when I race cause I love seeing that face when I can hand him something.) It is…

  • Awesome suggestion. I'm back to base building now and I do this exact thing. Overall time and heart rate are my only metrics right now. Distance and average pace are just surprises when I get done with a run. I can't tell you how much stress this took away from my runs. Started actually having fun again.

  • Caffeine and vitamin B complex. If you want to feel like you have jet fuel running through you then grab a 5 hour energy and chase it with just a bit of gatorade about 45 minutes pre-race. It's debatable about how healthy it is but I also drop two Tylenol as well (I believe the latest is advil is a no no bc of liver issues…
  • yes.
  • It's all in your head. For reals.
  • Additionally, times in general mean much less from race to different race. Someone who is your exact age/height/and so on could be putting numbers up a few minutes faster than you even though you are a better runner just because of the specific race you ran. There's could be flat on perfect race conditions for them while…
  • Wait, your resting heart rate is 55 and just walking shoots it up to 130?
  • Some off the top of my head -Don't binge on carbs the night before. Just a normal meal that is slanted more towards higher carbs. -Get there early. For real. -Porta-potties are your friend when you get there. Go and use them before you think you have to or else you will be stuck in a line for 30 minutes. -Enjoy the…
  • You'll shoot your eye out.
  • To me that sounds like you are a victim of cumulative fatigue at this point. Especially if you started hitting up back to back long runs plus speed work a week or so after you left it out on the table at a half.

  • Same as you. I need my watch. I'm no stranger to the marathon + distances but just recently I completely screwed up a fun run 5k. Been reading all these articles about zen running without a watch. Go by feel they said. Listen to your body they said. Ignore your watch they said. It'll be an amazing experience and you will…

  • 1. Running isn't necessary but you should find some of activity to stress your cardio system for overall health. 2. If you are red faced and breathless than you are trying to do it in a way that is waaaay above your level. That's like me going into the gym, loading up all the 45 plates available on the bar and deciding…

  • Some times you just have off days. Some times you just have an off week. Bad runs happen to everyone regardless if you are new or veteran. Just don't let it get in your head and screw up your next run. Don't over analyze it, just move on. All is not a waste when you have these days anyway, they make you mentally tougher…
