I get away with counting only net carbs. My wife hasn't gotten results unless she goes by total carbs. That said, calories are important to some extent also.

Well, I start by taking the family first. Cheese spreads, other dippy stuff, green bean casserole, or meatballs are easy and everyone likes them. Or if I'm pressed for time and being lazy I'll pull the "I'll bring drinks" card and just grab 2 liters.

I had one but no longer use it. Since my phone is always with me, I put a step app on it. Accuracy wise, the app and the Fitbit were usually within 200 steps over the course of an average day(9000). The count is a nice barometer of how much you move, but calories are still king.
