  • Everything I learned about keto, I learned from youtube. There's a very vibrant and enthusiastic and positive keto community there. Check out Dr. Ken Berry's channel. He's a practicing M.D. and he has tons of great info on the keto lifestyle. Also fantastic recipes from Keto Connect, Headbanger's Kitchen and CJ's Keto…
  • It's interesting...I've never tried a diet that's so easy to stick to. It doesn't even feel like a diet. Even in unexpected situations, like spending the day at a hospital with a relative in the ER, when I finally got a half hour to eat, I got a cheeseburger, plain with no bun. There was a time when I would have thought…
  • Yeah, I didn't fall for that one. I just use sea salt.
  • They sure haven't gotten any money from me. I'm sure there are 'experts' pushing potions and pills, but I don't take any of those. Everything I've learned and everything I've tried has been 100% free. I don't know that I'd recommend this lifestyle for someone looking to lose a few pounds, or someone who's not a diabetic.…
  • It also helped, in my case, by breaking the addiction to junk carbs. Once I cut out the white bread and sugar and processed foods, it was like flipping a switch. I just didn't want them anymore. Being a food addict, it's the only thing that's worked for me. I spent years giving my money to Kellogg's, to Nestle, to Weight…
  • I highly recommend keto. I've been a food addict since I was 11 years old and a type 2 diabetic for about ten years. At the end of last year I was completely out of control, up to almost 240 lb and my blood glucose was through the roof. And still I couldn't stop. I ate fast food every day. Entire boxes of chocolates. My…
  • I live with other people (unavoidably) and they have a MASSIVE sweet tooth. They eat a lot of junk and the kitchen is always crammed with cakes, cookies, candy, ice cream, pizza, french fries, etc. When I was trying to diet regularly it was a nightmare. I'm a food addict, so imagine an alcoholic having to live in a liquor…
  • I do! It's my one bad habit, I can't give it up. I'm not a coffee drinker, so that ice cold Diet Mountain Dew gets me going in the morning, and I usually have about 3 of the slim 16.9 ounce bottles a day. I may eventually taper down/stop altogether but one battle at a time.
  • I love keto. I started January 1st and I've already lost almost 40 lb. I'm never hungry and don't crave the junk. The very basic tenets of keto are that you cut out sugar and grains and vegetable oils. I aim for about 20 carbs a day. Some people shoot for 30. You just have to find the sweet spot that works for you. For me,…
  • They have to do it gradually, yeah. And as far as I understand, some brands like Lean Cuisine actually have been working to scale back the amount of salt in their products. But it's frustrating to have to give things up that I know and love. Almost half my day's supply of sodium in one serving of Campbell's tomato soup.…
  • Truth. In. Labeling. Stop letting food manufacturers get away with slapping "Natural", "Lite" and "Healthy" on crap foods and getting away with it because the FDA doesn't have even a minimal standard to use those terms. Serving sizes should be exact and equivalent to what a reasonable adult would consume (half a muffin?…
  • I don't have a problem with plant-based burgers in general but I do have a problem with the fact that ingredients in the Impossible Whopper were not only tested on animals (let that sink in for a minute) but that those lab rats were purchased from a lab animal farm notorious for poor conditions and ill treatment. This was…
  • I just want to preface this by saying I'm not preaching keto, or trying to tell you that you should do keto. I'm just sharing my own journey in hopes that something in it will help you. I'm 49 and I've been a binge eater since I was 11. I was also diagnosed with type 2 diabetes at age 38. I've gained and lost the same 40…
  • I've lost 37 lb. on keto and never bought a single test strip. I don't do intermittent fasting either. I don't think it's important or worth stressing over. Your body will tell you what you need to know. If you've only been on keto for a week, you're probably still becoming fat-adapted (adjusting from burning glucose for…
  • All of these feelings are understandable but they broke my heart a little. Comparison is the thief of joy. There's always going to be someone younger/prettier/fitter/healthier/richer than you. So what? The only one who determines your self-worth is you. Not this man, not some guy in a bar. If you make changes, do it for…
  • Great ideas, thank you! The consensus definitely seems to be walking to start out with, and as someone else said, it's free. I'm going to take advantage of this cool Spring weather and give it a try.
  • That sounds wonderful. I've really been getting more into nature lately, and this is the perfect time of year to do it. Sadly, all too soon it'll be extremely hot and humid here, but you've given me some good ideas on what to do on those days when I'm stuck indoors.
  • Wow...that's amazing that you had such good results in 30 days. I'm inspired and I'll try it too. Thanks for the advice and the recommendation. I'm a big believer in youtube for fitness and health and I'm excited to check out these videos.
  • Thanks! It does sound like a good way to ease myself back into regular physical exercise before I get into anything more complex.
  • Those are some good ideas. If I have something interesting to listen to, I could definitely walk a good while! And the parks are lovely this time of year. I'll give it a try! And thanks.
  • I think you really touched on something there. I got turned off to exercise during the misery of P.E. class in school, always being the chubby, awkward, unathletic kid, and hated any physical activity thereafter. Especially during the summer heat. You're right. Exercise should be joyous, a celebration of the body and…
  • I'm all for that! I agree, consistency is key, especially when you're just starting to try to get back into shape. Thanks for the good advice.
  • Thanks! Spring couldn't be a better time. I'll give it a try.
  • Thanks! I do have a bicycle and I have struggled with it in the past as it turned out to be unexpectedly heavy (22 lb!) but I think once I build up a little more strength and endurance I can handle it. I'll definitely ease into it...I've been sedentary a long time.
  • Thanks! It's gorgeous here in Virginia right now so it's the perfect time to try it.
  • Thanks for the advice and the links. I'll definitely check these out!
  • Thank you for the good advice. It's perfect walking outdoors weather right now. Where I live, in summer it's just too hot and humid but you've given me some good ideas for those extra warm days!
  • I was when I started too. Check out Dr. Ken Berry's videos on youtube. He's a real practicing M.D. (not a chiropractor like some of the other youtube doctors giving nutritional advice) who lives in Tennessee, has done keto himself, and he has a whole series of videos talking about the keto lifestyle. If you have a…

  • Youtube is a gold mine. Check out channels like Keto Connect and Headbanger's Kitchen. If you can think of it, there's a keto recipe for it.
