  • It's not important to me and never has been. Eating late, however is. So, I have my 'breakfast' at night time. This means that I am replacing any potential unhealthy evening grazing, with an actual, calorie counted meal.
  • I've only just started but during my first week, I misunderstood that 1200 is the net I should aim for. My net had been as low as 500 some days (1200 - exercise calories). By the weekend, I was exhausted and pretty hungry! So, now I aim nearer to the 1200. I want to be healthy enough to swim :)
  • Are you eating your exercise calories back? On exercise days, I go from a 1200 allowance, to 1600 or so. I only eat half back, because mfp is particularly generous in swimming calorie burns but you probably do need to eat that extra sustenance, if you are exercising.
  • It definitely depends whether it fits into your ideal daily calorie intake or not. I put on masses of weight, when I got a taste for lattes! It wasn't the fault of the lattes but the fact they took me to almost twice my daily allowance (I drank a lot of coffee). Most things are fine within reason (makes for a more balanced…
  • We drizzle it with olive oil and a pinch or two of salt. Baked on high for a few minutes, it makes interesting and relatively healthy crisps!
  • You say you don't want to go sedentary again but morning sickness doesn't usually last throughout a pregnancy, so you can probably afford to look after yourself for the time you do have it, then return to appropriate exercise afterwards? Keep in mind that hormones through pregnancy do cause relaxation of ligaments and this…
  • Finding an exercise I love has made all the difference. I'm new to this but probably wouldn't even be here, if I hadn't rekindled my love of swimming. I go 5 days per week, which raises my calorie allowance (I eat half back on average, across my exercise and rest days) to a level which I find hard to meet. So, weight loss…
  • I second this! General swimming or even drills to target areas for muscle strength. Breast stroke is particularly good for building pecs (funnily enough!) and even more effective when used as an arm (no leg) drill. Front crawl (freestyle) is also good and is generally a more powerful workout but not quite as chest specific.
  • 14 lb in a month actually sounds like quite a lot, given the recommendation for healthy weight loss is 1 - 2 lb per week and more usually, 1 lb. How are you measuring your calorie burn? Regarding tests, just put your foot down. If you feel there is something wrong, it is reasonable to request that concern be investigated,…
  • One of the things I love about swimming, is that everyone else ceases to exist for the duration :D
  • Exactly this! Swimming is my thing too. No other form of exercise inspired me but swimming? I love it! Because of this, I spend 8 hrs per week in the pool. I'd be unlikely to tolerate gym or land based exercise for 8 minutes.
  • I don't weigh myself except for 6 monthly check ups. For me, getting fit and healthy is the aim, with weight loss being a happy side effect. I look at how much better I've eaten, from one week to the next. I look at how much further I can swim or walk, since the week before. There's a clear and tangible improvement this…
  • :s What she does with her time and money is up to her, however, I'm sure many people would love to have a gym membership but can't afford even a dirt cheap one! I have a cheap swimming membership and go swimming for about 8 hours per week. If I didn't have a cheap membership, I couldn't go at all, so I feel grateful and…
  • Robertus gave me a great swimming plan on this thread :) ... http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10186715/getting-the-most-out-of-swimming-and-pool-time#latest
  • I'll share too! I used to be a self defence instructor. I trained and taught daily, for may hours per day. I came down with M.E. My health deteriorated (over 7 years) to the point that I could not walk half a mile, two weeks ago. On my first swim (a week ago), I could barely manage half a length. This week, I'm on 20…
  • This! I accidentally lost 2.2lb (1kg) last week, due to being a newbie and my poor grasp of net calories. I wouldn't recommend it. By the weekend I was exhausted and *needed* to 'overeat' just to keep going and stave off the aches from poor muscle repair. I also understand the 'healthiest' and most sustainable weight loss…
  • I find this inspiring! I'm on medication, a side effect of which is insulin resistance (and annoyingly, appetite stimulation!). I'm just starting to understand what this means for me and for my diet but your post is both encouraging and reassuring to me. Thank you.
  • Bicurious? Possibly. Honestly, all of the labelling at times made me feel quite alienated from the LGBTQ community, tbh. You are who you are, identify however you choose. No labels required :)
  • I have an allowance of 1200 with 1600 on exercise days (5 days per week). I eat between 1100 and 1200 but struggle to eat the 1400 I should eat, to eat half of my calories back. This is balanced by my two rest days though, when I seem to struggle to stay within 1200! Boredom, I think :)
  • This! Be as kind and non-judgemental towards yourself and past self, as you would be towards another person in your position.
  • That's a shame! (Pool issues). I don't like days off. I absolutely have to have two a week but I definitely hit a boredom induced slump even on those! I wonder how much of it is down to the reduction in endorphin/ seratonin levels from the lack of exercise on those days? If you can't exercise, do something else that makes…
  • Swimming is the only exercise in which I don't injure myself (ME and history of DPU). I can relate to your frustration. It was impossible for me to rebuild my fitness level in any land based activity, so I switched to swimming. Aerobic, anaerobic, cardiovascular and resistance all in one, across all muscle groups, with the…
  • Thank you so much Robertus! Distance based appeals to me much more than timed and your results are really encouraging. I'll start following your plan on Monday. It sounds challenging but manageable, which is exactly what I need. Thanks again :)
  • Thank you! I'll have a look now.
  • ME/ CFS has defined me for around 7 years. This week has been my turning point :) I was a self defence instructor, then came down with PTSD, ME and DPU (delayed pressure urticaria). Over the course of 7 years, my health and fitness deteriorated to the point that I couldn't walk half a mile, without spending the next two…
  • I'm sorry that you're experiencing this. No one should have to endure heckling while going about their daily life! Nor should you have to avoid an area you would otherwise use and have equal right to use. One option might be to speak with your local PCSO? They can be incredibly helpful in resolving errant teen issues. If…
  • It looks as though I'm disagreeing with Orphia! It was just a cross post. A few days will no doubt work for some people:)
  • From my experience with sleep disorders, sleeping tablets usually have to be taken consistently for a week (but no longer), in order to have the best chance of helping you reset your circadian rhythm. They are rarely used as a long term solution but often don't need to be. They do need to be given a chance to work though…
  • I used to be a self defence instructor. Then M.E. happened and my health deteriorated (over a seven year period), to the point that I couldn't even walk my children to school, without spending the following two weeks in agony and exhaustion. My journey isn't about losing weight so much as beating M.E. and getting fit…
  • I see, thank you very much for your explanation! I had thought the MFP swimming calories seemed particularly generous but the weight loss this week (2.2lb) encouraged me to believe it may be true. I see now that I've possibly just been eating too little (depending upon whether the 1200 minimum is accurate)! I'm only five…
