  • I don't have much advice, except to second mirrim's suggestion of a physio. I've gotten a referral on two different occasions, both for minor overuse injuries, and it helped immensely. I'm sorry about your thumb and hope it heals quickly!
  • Thank you krokador! Yes, please continue to be a form nazi about shoulders... I tend to think about my feet, knees, and back, and forget about my shoulders. Regarding OHP, I'm probably not "finishing" the lift by shrugging at the top, so I'll be thinking about that. I feel like these five exercises (and probably most other…
  • I added a post in the form check thread looking for feedback on my deadlift and overhead press. Any advice would be appreciated!
  • Okay, here are videos from the other two exercises: Deadlift: http://youtu.be/UzVsHBYDvRA Overhead Press: http://youtu.be/tnGGQUm4ESk I feel like my OHP is just a mess. I'm trying to keep my back straight and torso still, but when I watched the video, I couldn't believe how much I was moving. Not sure where to start here.
  • Oh my goodness, so much helpfulness! Thank you very much! I'm printing these responses out to really study and focus on. Regarding safety for the bench press: Once the weight starts getting even remotely heavy I'm going to start dragging the bench into the rack and setting the safety pins, especially if I'm by myself. If I…
  • I'm sorry. =( If it was a free session you got by joining the gym, then you're probably right: He didn't know what to do with you! When I wanted to start StrongLifts, I used a free training session because I was really intimidated by the whole process. When I called to schedule the appointment, the person I spoke to (a…
  • Yes, thank you! I keep forgetting to think about my upper back and shoulders.
  • Thank you for taking a look! If you wouldn't mind, could you elaborate a bit on your phrasing: * Squats - What do you mean by getting a bit tighter with my upper back? * Bench - "loose on the bench"? * Rows - "keeping the shoulders packed"? Sorry! I'm still learning all the terminology and whatnot. I'll focus on the things…
  • Okay, hopefully I can get the videos to work properly. I had my daughter video me doing a set of each exercise for StrongLifts workout A. Could I please get some feedback on my form? Squats: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=synEt39Vwpc Bench Press: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o64l6R5F3qw Rows:…
  • Workout A today, and I added some warmup sets for the first time. Squats: 2x5 bodyweight 1x5 @ 45# 1x5 @ 55# 5x5 @ 60# Bench Press: 1x5 @ 45# 1x5 @ 55# 5x5 @ 60# Rows: 1x5 @ 55# 5x5 @ 60# There were several guys in the weight room today, but I just went about my workout instead of being intimidated, so yay me for that! =)
  • I don't do CrossFit, but I'm thinking there's no way you gained 9 pounds of muscle in a month, especially as a female. So I think you're right: it's your diet. =\ It's okay though: Lesson learned, right? Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and start tracking what you eat.
  • I'll get my adventuring hat!
  • Well... From what I understand, carbohydrates and protein contain 4 calories per gram and fat is 9 calories per gram. So 100 grams each of carbs and protein plus 60 grams of fat would come out to 1340 calories, which, unless one is very small and inactive, would be a caloric deficit. Based on my research and experience,…
  • Exactly! I've not found a bar that comes close to those macros. Plus I can keep one in my purse without it melting all over the place on a hot day, since it doesn't have a chocolate coating.
  • Did SL workout B today: Squats 5x5 @ 55# Overhead Press 5x5 @ 30# Deadlift 1x5 @ 95# and 1x5 @ 105# I've been doing two deadlift sets so I can practice form. Also, I tried using the ez bar instead of dumbbells for the press, and I like it much better. My 12yo daughter was giving me sarcastic encouragement during my last…
  • I love Quest bars! I had an appointment with a dietician a while back, and when I said I use Quest bars to increase my protein intake, he did an Internet search and pulled up the nutrition facts of a Quest bar and a Snickers bar. He intended to show me that protein bars were little more than expensive candy bars. (True for…
  • I'll check out that diet break link! I've been trying to eat plenty of protein and timing my workouts just before dinner, so I can eat right after. I'm not going to try adding weight every session like Mehdi says; I'll just see how it goes, I guess. If I start feeling crazy hungry, I'll re-assess my diet. My main reason…
  • I also really like that as a stretch for after a run.
  • I just started about two weeks ago. Weight lifting has been on my bucket list for a while, but I was super-intimidated. It's amazing to me how quickly I've gotten comfortable in the weight room. My weights are still very light, as I have been focusing on form. I've mostly been using just the bar (45#). Deadlifts at 95#…
  • I've got them on order and am excited to try them out. I deliberately did not want something with a heel... I don't seem to have a problem going all the way down in my squats (low-bar). Just looking for something flat and not cushioned. Thanks for all the opinions!
  • Thanks for the opinions! I'll get them on order. =)
  • For less than twenty bucks I'm not concerned about the cost. I guess I would just feel stupid wearing "special shoes" if they weren't particularly necessary. When I go to the gym, I've been lifting and doing cardio, and my gym requires that you change out of your street shoes when you come inside (to keep the place…
  • Okay, good to know. Unless it starts actually hurting, I won't worry about it. Thanks!
  • You can add me if you'd like. I've been losing weight on and off for a few years but just started using the social aspects of MFP a few days ago.
  • I've gotten most of my "nice" activewear from a local store that does awesome sales twice a year. As long as I don't have my heart set on a specific item, I can wait and get things for up to 70% off. I often find workout shirts/tanks at Target and such, but workout pants from inexpensive brands never seem to work for me.…
  • I haven't bought a pair yet, but they're on my wish list for when I lose more weight. Right now I fit into their largest size of the stretchier pants. And they actually look good on me. Also, I love the idea of free hemming. I'm 5'4", which apparently is often too short for regular but too tall for petite. They also have…
  • I wish I hadn't crash dieted out of impatience. I initially started at 240# and gradually got down to 165# and stagnated there. Then, for a week, I kept my calories under 600 and did two workouts per day. Almost passed out once. I lost 10# in a week, then gained it back over the next few days. Oh, plus another 30#.
  • Thank you for explaining the squiggly bar!
