  • @MobyCarp - I saw an article today about a 12 year old girl who accidentally ran the Flower City Half last weekend. Apparently, she was signed up for the 5K, thought she was running late (but was actually early--the 5K started after the half), and lined up with the runners as they were starting the half. She finished in…
  • @goin2cruise - Way to go on accomplishing your monthly goal! And with 5 days to spare!
  • I decided against running on Friday (and Sunday). I think I'm going to take the rest of this month off--sticking with spin classes and weightlifting to stay active. My right leg is feeling better, but I still get a pain over the fibula if I cross my legs or otherwise put pressure on it. Hopefully another week will be…
  • Only did 3 miles today. Set out without a real distance goal and was having trouble getting into a groove. Decided last minute to just do some hill repeats on a fairly steep but short hill--not ideal, but better than just heading back to the office. I'm thinking I may need to take some time off again. I'm now having pain…
  • All this talk about courses and elevation got me thinking... @Elise4270 and @WhatMeRunning - I just uploaded my GPS data from last year's Jenks Half to my Strava account, if you're interested in a course preview: Jenks Half
  • Got in 4.2 miles in the rain today. My GPS lock was a little sketchy at first, and logged about 1/10th of a mile less than it should have. I felt like I was moving at a decent pace, then saw the 11+ time and hadn't reached the mile buzzer yet (still almost 1/10th away! Ugh!). But then I realized I had already passed the…
  • Very slow and painful (mentally) 4.5 miles today. Set out to do 5.5, but I just wasn't feeling it, so cut it a bit short. That puts me at 24 miles so far this month. Mom just decided last night that she's coming to visit me this weekend, so I probably won't get a run in on Sunday. Feel like I could use a break anyway, so…
  • Got home from work today and grabbed the mail. I noticed a package in the mailbox with my name on it... Weird, since I hadn't ordered anything. Opened it up to find a 1/4 zip long sleeve shirt from the marathon I ran last month. Sweet! I thought the T-shirt that came with the race packet was all there was to be had. :D
  • I use either an armband (Amphipod brand--it's oversized and can fit my large phone, plus keys/id/etc) or a Camelbak (only on long or very hot runs when I need to take hydration and body glide and keys and food and...). In either case, if you're using it for music, I definitely recommend investing in some wireless…
  • 5.5 miles in the rain during my lunch break today, at an 11:20/mile average pace. Not many people out there. I did meet a guy walking down the sidewalk who stepped off onto the grass and cheered me on as I passed by. LOL. People are so much nicer when you're running in the rain than when it's nice outside--guess that's the…
  • OMG..."Like" and "Awesome" buttons on posts!!!
  • I finally managed to get another run in. Have been reading the thread whenever possible, but just haven't been making it out to actually run much. Did 4.3 today, which puts me at a total of 14 miles for the month. Pretty poor mileage for me. I've just been very stressed out lately and haven't had the motivation to really…
  • Good reminder, @_nikkiwolf_ It's goose nesting season now. You will notice that they are no longer hanging out in flocks but rather in pairs. They will hang out near the nest to protect it, so be especially leery for the next month or so!
  • @greenolivetree - The Jenks Half hardly qualifies as a crowd. There were only about 300 people total last year. I ran a 2:10:54 race and literally could not see a single person in front of or behind me for the last half of the race! Very chill experience, so it might be a good one to start with. No pressure (nudge,…
  • @greenolivetree - NW Arkansas. Seeing the correlation in our weather patterns recently, I figured you must be fairly close to me! I'm in NE Oklahoma.
  • WELCOME to all the new people who have just joined us! This is a great place with a lot of good information (and conversation). I ran today! 5.45 miles, which puts me at a total of 9.7 miles (of 100 goal) for the month. Put my watch on HR mode and completely ignored pace--just focusing on keeping the HR in the low 150s. I…
  • Just got back from my appointment with the orthopedic surgeon (MRI followup) and finally have a diagnosis: Os trigonum syndrome and a low-lying soleus muscle. http://www.foothealthfacts.org/footankleinfo/os_trigonum_syndrome.htm Basically, I have an extra bone in the back of my ankle that is causing an impingement. The…
  • @zoe2434 - I use Samsung Galaxy Gear Circle wireless headphones, which I got for about $35. Pros: 1) Battery life of ~9 hours playback time 2) Removable plastic neck piece if you feel you need more security during activity (so they don't fall to the ground if they fall out of your ears) 3) Volume control on earpiece 4)…
  • @Stoshew71 - We're not entirely sure what happened. She was found in their yard, a short distance from the fence line. She either went under the fence and was in their yard, or their dog grabbed her under the fence and pulled her through. Knowing both dogs, I think the second option is more likely. A little history: I know…
  • Thank you all for your kind words. Here are some pictures of the late, great Maggie (AKA "The Squidge"). Annoyed with her fur friends for invading her lap space: Maggie in her native setting (asleep in the chair next to me, laying on the TV remote): The day she first showed up at our house, a stray no more:
  • No time to catch up at the moment. I didn't end up running this weekend. One of the neighbor's dogs killed our dachshund, Maggie, yesterday morning. I had left her out in our fence with our two big dogs and there was a place under the fence that a recent rain had eroded out. She liked being outside, so, as usual, she was…
  • First run of the month (and first run post-marathon) complete. Notes: Running is SO HARD. The weather was nice, if a bit humid and super windy at times. But, man, was it tough today. I made sure to keep my HR down in the low 150s (after the first couple miles of not paying much attention to it--whoops), which led to an…
  • Going for 100 miles again this month. Maybe I'll actually hit it this time. No races on the schedule until mid-May (half marathon). Haven't actually registered for that one yet, as I'm waiting for the results from my ankle MRI before I commit to anything. Will hopefully have some answers on Tuesday!
  • I was going to run today (first run post marathon), but life has gotten in the way. Had to get my husband from the airport and drop him at home over lunch before heading back to work. Plus it's been raining and is supposed to continue all night. Oh well. I'm dealing with some pain in my ankle atm anyway, so it's probably…
  • @Elise4270 - Tell me more about these Newton shoes. I've been on the hunt for some new trail shoes (read: trail shoes, since i've previously done trails in my old road shoes). Do they fit normally? I can't do anything on the narrow side. I like a wide toe box, but need a normal to narrow heel. If you think they might fit…
  • @WhatMeRunning - Ha! Chasing beaver. And your wife was pleased...sounds like you have an interesting relationship. LOL Jumping in on the wildlife discussion since I have no running to add (not starting up again until tomorrow evening). 1) Spiders. I hate spiderwebs, just because they're annoying to run into and impossible…
  • Look at all you rock stars meeting and exceeding your goals! I will likely not meet mine this month, as I'm still recovering from the marathon. But that's ok. I've never actually met one of my goals in this challenge--maybe next month! lol Plan on reintroducing some easy running by middle of next week. I have an MRI…
  • Conversation of the day: Random cashier: You're not moving very well today. Me: I ran a marathon yesterday. Cashier: Oh, a 5k? Me: Uh, no. 26.2 miles... *shakes head* silly non runners!
  • Ok, full race report time. My sister flew in to Tulsa at about 9am Saturday, and we drove directly from the airport to Ardmore (exactly 3 hours). After checking into the hotel, we decided to spend the afternoon at Turner Falls. Our training plan called for a 2 mile run, but we decided to just hike around instead. Climbed…
  • Full race report later, but FIRST MARATHON is in the books. I finished just shy of 4:52. Due to my recent stress fracture and missed training, my goal was just to finish with a side goal of under 5 hours. Actually ran about 26.5 thanks to bad corners. Pretty sure that puts me at 75.3 of 100 miles for the month.
