Are you under the impression that Govt reccs are to eat a large fraction of your daily calories from leafy vegetables ? Have a look at the Govt pyramid. They are advocating less "red meat" animal products. Substitution of the lost calories and protein is from the staples I mentioned, chicken and fish. They also advocate…

To the extent that the government recommendations say less animal products, they can be loosely called 'more vegetarian.' However, this 'more vegetarian' approach does not mean grow more broccoli to eat more broccoli, it means eat more grains, beans, lentils and soya products. The same products that are now being diverted…

Vitamins and trace elements are needed to keep you healthy, they have nothing to do with weight loss. 'Healthy' can be obscure, so think of things like the following: Energy Immune system Hair Vision Soft smooth skin The list goes on and on. 99.9% of the supplements industry is crap that only makes you poorer, but if your…

Shakybabe, Vegetarianism is not a weight loss strategy. It is probably true that vegetarians as a group are thinner than the rest, but it has more to do with having a healthier lifestyle, paying more attention to what they eat and avoiding a junk food diet. Of course nothing stops a vegetarian from eating candy. That is…

http://www.news.cornell.edu/stories/1997/08/us-could-feed-800-million-people-grain-livestock-eat So, what does MFP do ? Why, use lettuce as a rallying cry against vegetarianism, of course.

^^ You will pay ~$40 for the privilege. Lettuce and broccoli is resource intensive. It is also a small fraction of the daily calories of a vegetarian diet. Agricultural production eaten directly is a vastly more sustainable and efficient use of resources than turning those products into animals that people then eat. This…

I wrote earlier: The general ecological argument, which IS true, is that the foods grown and fed to animals are much better utilized as direct foods to humanity. For example, eat corn rather than feeding it to animals that are later butchered. Less misery and much more environmentally sound. I've calculated the conversion…

A couple of quotes: "You'd be hostile, too, if you were vitamin B, and iron deficient. Imagine seeing everyone eating delicious food and you're there with your couscous and tabouli smoothie. Hostility." "You'd be hostile, too, if you could only eat rabbit food." [Edited by MFP Staff]

Your old diet sounds pretty bad. It will take time to get used to something better. Suggestions: 1. Log your old diet so that you know how many calories you were actually consuming. 2. Perhaps buy a pedometer so that you know how many calories you are burning at work. Under $30 3. Expect to eat a lot less cheesecake, and a…

How much resistance training, and based on what research ? I admit to being skeptical, but I will read the original research with an open mind.

A correction to my earlier post: lean body weight for OP (no fat at all) is around 105 pounds. So a weight of 150 puts her at 45/150 = 30% body fat. Somewhere around 15 more pounds of weight loss should put you in a pretty good place, which would be a BF% of mid twenties. You are doing great OP.

This forum's logging function will add up protein for you. 167 cm is 5 feet , 5.75 inches
-
Compare yourself to photos on the internet of different BF percentages - it is likely more accurate than your device. OR ... How tall are you ? An "ideal" body weight for females that includes the healthy minimum 13% fat is ~ 1.75 pounds per inch. You can figure out your BF% from there. Lastly, and probably the question…

I work in a hospital, and brought in food is a constant temptation. Some of the doctors are slowly changing cultural habits by bringing in vegetable platters or sometimes crackers and cheeses for snacking rather than cookies and candy. NDJ: rather than feel under attack from the 'dieters,' consider bringing your workers…

Our kids are now past college and when I reflect I think my biggest failing was not encouraging them enough to embrace exercise. We unfortunately lived in a neighborhood where kids did not play outside and bicycles were not the go to transport. They were taken to activities but we did not play active things together. Both…

Wow Thanks for posting, and the attached legend to the photos. The blue hair moment is terrific.

You are confusing changes in water weight with nutrition. The incessant nitpicking over fractions of fat, carbs and protein are just fads with no basis in nutrition or physiology. Eat 20% or eat 80% of each -- it does not matter. Heck, the body can even put up with the inane "keto" diets although why one would do so if not…

I understand. A reasonably accurate CICO log should dispel most of the uncertainty, at least if trended over time. I recommend ignoring the various fads of high this or low that and just concentrate on a varied diet with good nutrition, adequate protein, lots of exercise and a negative calorie deficit. And if in doubt, add…

Speak for yourself, if you cannot contain the urge. But don't do it for me, since I could not care less. I did not start this troll thread; I am not the one throwing out snide insults; Or FUD. And I don't have to rationalize my lifestyle or treatment of life. I am quite able and willing, however, to stomp on any turkeys…

I can imagine the cannibals of New Guinea saying the same.

A 'sedentary' BMR is 20% higher than BMR by itself, so typically people are already logging their activities of daily living. If you log simple activities you are likely double counting.

For me another great ploy in the mind hunger gains is to either get some light exercise or just go DO something. If I'm not thinking about food I'm not hungry

To lose 4 pounds a week of non-water weight you have to be in calorie deficit of 2000 kCal a DAY. So either you were exercising like a demon, or you lost quite a bit of water weight along with your dieting in the first 10 weeks. I'll bet on the latter, and say that your continuing loss of 2 lbs a week is outstanding. I'll…

If I remember right the foods I eat that are richest in fibre are lentils, tofu, and fresh snap peas. The snap peas are my favorite snack, so I eat a LOT of them. I easily eat twice the MFP recommended daily fibre.

So far as I know, a 'healthy weight range' means that epidemiological studies have shown that the disclosed range is not linked with decreased survival. That leaves a lot of room for impaired quality of life at both ends of the range. Then there is the problem with BMI itself, which does not distinguish fat from muscle.…

Do not equate a T1D whose underlying metabolic defect is low circulating insulin levels, with a T2D from obesity who has *high* circulating levels of insulin and peripheral resistance.

Thorsmom, ^^ This could easily be true, but it doesn't change the more important message: Get adequate nutrition, and then the rate of weight loss is a personal preference. A calorie ingested today does not have any special quality over one eaten yesteryear and stored. I've met a few of the forum regulars who will scream…

Some cultures teach that if you feel full after eating you have eaten too much. So very much as you say, hunger has a BIG perception component. Fuhrman of the Nutritarian movement tries to teach people to recognize the difference between what I think he calls real and fake hunger. I don't know details or how successful his…

Do you have the original article ? The blog is more than a bit silly since vegetarians do not replace animal products with only or even mostly lettuce. E.g., most of my calories are from lentils and soy beans. The general ecological argument, which IS true, is that the foods grown and fed to animals are much better…
