  • fats and carbs are pretty much always balanced like that. To eat less carbs but keep the same calories you have to eat more fat and the reverse is true also. You need to decide for yourself if you are going for a more carb heavy or fat heavy diet.
  • I tried it for a couple of weeks and didn't really get on with it. To be fair, it was a really half hearted try and I don't think I really gave it much of a chance. On the 500 calorie days all I wanted to do was get through them as quickly as possible so I could eat the next day. When I knew I had a 500 cal day coming I…
  • All carbs are sugar so it IS likely to do with sugar. Try having a high protein breakfast instead (eggs and bacon maybe?) and see how you feel. Some people have adverse reactions to sugar like this.
  • After reading The Vegetarian Myth I'm not sure how true this is
  • I lost weight easily enough while eating bread, but I've recently stopped eating it and feel better in ways I didn't know I could.
  • Too much fruit to be carb free or even low carb. You are grain free though.
  • Carbs are the least useful macronutrient. It provides nothing but calories. Fat however is required by the body (ever heard of essential fatty acids) and is needed for fat soluble vitamins to be absorbed
  • He is actually planning on doing that! So it will be really interesting to compare results. It still stands that in this situation, for this guy, the equation did not work accurately for him which suggest there is a limitation somewhere.
  • Im not talking about the thermic effects, I'm talking about the metabolic effects. I should have also said that both the composition and the amount of calories you input will affect output. And by reliably I mean I can eat X calories and workout to burn Y calories and add my BMR which is Z calories and figure out exactly…
  • The composition of the food that makes up calories in will affect the variable calories out. So while the equation technically makes sense, it cannot be used reliably because you dont have complete control over the second variable.
  • In that context, calories are completely irrelevant. Of course a calorie is a calorie outside the body, it is a fixed measurement. What use is that if when ingested, it is not the same?
  • Weight training will help get the results you are looking for. Continued dieting will likely only make you smaller, but wont change your shape. Building muscle changes your body composition (so, it will affect where you hold your fat) Lift HEAVY things
  • Eat fat

  • The way starvation mode is used on this forum isn't correct. What people mean when they say 'starvation mode' is often people will stall or plateau while eating quite low calorie, and find that when they increase their intake, they start losing again. This is likely due to the calorie deficit being offset by a lack of…
  • Are you lifting heavy things? If not, you should be lifting heavy things!!!
  • I do low carb (under 100g a day) and count calories. So far, I'm losing more than the CICO formula suggests according to my current tracking info. However, I have found a lot of energy and my fidgeting has really increased, which obviously doesn't get accounted for on my fitbit or on mfp (how does one track fidgeting?) So…
  • I'm sorry but EATING only 1000 calories is harmful whereas NETTING 1000 calories is completely different. The reason you are told not to EAT below 1200 is because there are basic nutrients you need every day, that you can only get from food, and it is incredibly difficult to get all that while eating below that. It has…
  • Then you should be eating 1200 - 1400 to lose 1lb a week
  • How many calories are you burning a day according to your fitbit?
  • My favourite bulk meal recipe is chili The recipe I use is a variant of this one http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/3228/chilli-con-carne But I use about 3 cans of beans (kidney, black bean and pinto bean. The latter 2 can be hard to find, but you can find them in waitrose for 99p a can) and waaay more spices (about 5…
  • Any sort of resistance training is meant to help, as well as HIIT (high intensity interval training). These kinds of exercises are meant to be the best for helping with insulin resistance. So you might want to look into weightlifting, kettlebells or crossfit. also, the lower the carbs the better, so you could try lowering…
  • I think a lot of people here employ cheat days because their daily calorie intake is set pretty low (I think many many people here have chosen to lose 2lbs a week) to create quite a large caloric deficit, so a cheat day doesn't really hinder progress. If you are consistently eating at a moderate deficit everyday a cheat…
  • Just as an addendum tot he point that 'only' 20% of people experience complications, complications can include death.
  • I don't have the science, I'm not sure this has been fully looked into, but considering that nutritional science and research is still ongoing we just dont know everything there is to know about what is a healthy diet. From that, you could conclude that there are likely things missing from supplements, that we only get…
  • What gets me about the obesity epidemic is that all these thin people that have never been fat and have never lost weight are trying to give advice to fat people about losing weight. How the hell are they supposed to know?
  • I eat walnuts everyday and avocado most days
  • I use almond milk for protein shakes because it tastes better than water and I dont ant to spend too many calories on a just a protein shake. Otherwise I use whole fat milk for everything else (tea, coffee, just drinkin' it). I offset the higher calories by not drinking huge glasses of it.
  • The point of fat head seems to have gone over some peoples heads

  • I actually enjoyed fathead. Of all the bull****ty food documentaries out there, this one seemed the least bull****tiest to me. I especially enjoyed that instead of just using population based observation studies, which base their findings on correlation, he included some studies that were actual experiments - something…

  • BMI is a load of crap. Yeah I said it. I don't think it's a very helpful tool for indicating health Fat is a side effect of an unhealthy lifestyle and it's that unhealthy lifestyle that is putting you at risk for all the health problems associated with obesity. Once you change your lifestyle and start losing weight, the…
