  • I was a pack-a-day smoker for 8 years when I quit, with a few extra on top of that on the weekend. I definitely agree that trying to make too many changes at once is not the key to success and the changing of the date is definitely not a good reason to make a big lifestyle change. I definitely wasn't an alcoholic, but I…
  • Whilst that may be good advice for some, quitting smoking cold turkey was the only thing that worked for me. After three years of trying to scale back, I finally decided I was just going to be done and 15 years later I literally haven't had another puff. It was the same for me with carbs, i tried scaling back slowly many…
  • I know a lot of people love the benefits of fasting, but it is a huge lifestyle change. I know you understand that and it definitely sounds like you're trying to get your dad to make the choice for himself to make some positive changes to improve his diabetes, but even just going very low carb is a huge change that can…
  • Awww what a beautiful family and what amazing success!! Way to go! You must have lots more energy to chase after your little guy now. You look radiant
  • The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living was the book that changed my life. I'd been eating low carb (100g-ish) for years and it helped me keep my blood sugar manageable and very much under control with the addition of drugs too, but I could never lose the weight and keep it off and the idea of getting off my meds…
  • Merry Christmas!! It's been such an inspirational year with all of you.
  • As a T2 diabetic, eating a low carb high protein diet can also result in a higher BG too. In my earlier attempts at going very low carb, I leaned too heavily on meat to overcome my carb cravings. It wasn't until I started swapping meat for fat that I really saw the BG plummet to new lows.
  • @riaward1990 I'm in the uk too and I use Sci Mx ultra whey protein. 2 scoops has 179 calories and 3.5 g carbs. I add a tbsp of double cream to it, which makes it much yummier, or 50 ml of coconut cream is good too. The SciMx is available at ASDA, Tesco and Amazon. Just check the label on the back cuz not all of them are…
  • The USDA offers an easily searchable web based tool, but it always used to be available as a downloadable PDF too. That's what I used to use before MFP existed.
  • Low carb protein powder with some added heavy cream or coconut cream. And you could add some more unflavoured protein powder to your puréed veggie soups. I highly recommend a handheld emulsion blender.
  • I'm T2, though I don't take metformin,so I have no experience there, but if you went from 20 g carbs a day to 60g and haven't offset that with any exercise, the jump you experienced is very much in line with what I would experience. A 30-40 g carb increase might not sound like a lot, but your body had likely adjusted to…
  • I would imagine it's like the pitch for eating whole grains, the increased fiber is supposed to slow digestion, which they say reduces the impact on your blood sugar. I buy that, if I ate an equal amount of carbs in two different sittings and one of those meals was a few gummy bears and the other was a slice of Ezekiel…
  • I look at the whole carb package when I'm assessing my meals for the day, including sugars and fiber. When low carb for me used to mean 100 g per day, I did more of an IIFYM plan, but I used that as an excuse to eat foods that I'm really better off avoiding, so now that I'm down to 20-35 g day, I try to eat pretty clean…
  • Hey that's a good excuse for having the info in there, maybe someone uses mfp to track their pet's diet... just trying to think positively o:)
  • What an awesome doc you found, good for you, sounds like a keeper for sure! I'm a T2 diabetic, off meds now for the most part thanks to my very low carb diet. Exercise is an important part of the equation too. The #1 thing that drives up my BG now is most definitely stress, to the point where I've needed to use insulin…
  • Ummm... maybe they were trying to deduct calories from their day :s
  • I'm a year in and still experience cravings, though, yes, they are the worst when you've recently eaten carbs, as in at the start or immediately following any excessive carb consumption after avoiding them for long periods. When my cravings hit me really hard, I usually allow myself to just eat a little more, but I keep it…
  • Yes! It's totally doable :) We're going out for dinner on Christmas Eve before going to see Scrooge on stage and I'm getting a goat cheese and rocket salad starter, lamb chops for my main entree (not eating the potato cake) and a cheese platter for dessert (skipping the oat cakes and chutney). And on Christmas Day I'm…
  • If I feel like getting fancy, I just throw things into a jug of water like lemon, lime, cucumber, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, mint, ginger. Never made kombucha though, nor do I drink vinegar, however, I do have some raspberry vinegar that's really good in sparkling water (but there's clearly too much sugar in…
  • For potlucks, I've always brought a crockpot of pulled beef or pork with BBQ sauce on the side (so that I could skip it). I plug it in before bed and wake up with it ready to take out the door.
  • For sure, it didn't take long for me to see results eating this way and I have a lot of weight to lose. I saw the biggest drop in my blood sugar in the first 30 days of eating this way (which for me meant the biggest drop in insulin use as I never let my sugars get high, but I had to use a lot of insulin to keep them low).…
  • Not everyone experiences Dawn phenomenon and that's not exactly what's occurring with me. I usually wake up at about 6am and my BG is just fine and I eat breakfast and/or just drink coffee 2-3 hours later and by 10 am my BG will have risen higher than it will after any other meal I eat (though not excessively high, just…
  • Yep, absolutely this ^^ I used to take a diuretic for my BP along with a couple other pills. I quit my diuretic the first week eating keto level carbs because my BP plummeted due to the reduction in water retention. When I feel weak, I always check my BG and BP as I have a very similar response when either is super low.
  • I generally eat 3 meals a day, sometimes two and I keep them evenly sized. As a T2 diabetic I've always tried to avoid a big dinner specifically to better manage my BG. The last thing I need to do is eat a ton of food and then lie down for 8 hours, my body would have no hope of processing any glucose. But I would struggle…
  • @RalfLott as a T2 diabetic I don't take planned breaks, but as a flawed human being who has a challenging relationship with food and a very chaotic life, I've had my share of unplanned moments of keto interruption. I've been eating very low carb for a year now. In the first 3-4 months it took me about 2 weeks for my BG to…
  • Diabetics tend to have dry skin because we tend to be more dehydrated than non-diabetics due to the associated increased fluid loss that occurs as our bodies try to bring our blood glucose down. The dry skin is dangerous because as diabetics our wounds heal slower and it can lead to things like infections and skin ulcers…
  • Omg that sounds so expensive in dollars! I think I only paid about £39 for the year and my subscription is probably up soon. I'm happy to pay though just to avoid the ads everyone complains about.
  • Sugar is listed pretty high on that ingredient list and is often the primary ingredient in a lot of spice blends, as you noted. Look for ones without sugar and then you won't need to sweat the calories/macros much. You can also make your own blends at home to avoid the sugar. It definitely takes some shopping around, but…
  • Not sure how heavy or fit you are @collegefbfan but for me, being quite heavy still, I find lifting weights much more enjoyable, which means I'm much more likely to keep up with it. HIIT requires a bit more athleticism, energy and flexibility than I have right now. Though I do hope to be able to increase the intensity and…
  • I have premium, you can choose whether or not to add your exercise calories back in. Not sure which report you're looking at, I only use mfp on my phone now, but my default dashboard shows goal - calories consumed + exercise calories = calories remaining. Though I have my account set to ignore the exercise calories so my…
