I have known people who took the Bernstein program - very low calorie, injections whose legitimacy is questionable, and lots of money. Not worth it when all that needs to be done is cut calories and take a vitamin.

Please explain something to me - I truly do not get this. If an averaged sized person had knee or hip surgery, would the doctors tell them to eat more? Because their body will need more fuel to heal? Or is it just doctors who tell people who are overweight to "dont mind calories" if they know you are watching what you eat?…

I just ate less of what I like, but I have dramatically cut out things like white bread (need more fibre), sugary treats (prefer salty crunchy things) and successfully found a substitute for my favourite snack - potato chips (Kellogs cracker chips). My weekend breakfast is the same thing (weekday is just coffee) - whole…

Maybe if you could define what you think is "clean" you would be able to find some like minded posters?

Been at it about 6 months - I think this is one obsessive behaviour that is actually a good idea for me. Its a reinforcement that I am on the right track. I like getting that kind of instant gratification and positive feedback.
-
Same for me - a combination of knowing how many servings I am supposed to get out of a recipe and then weighing out what a portion of that recipe is. Yes, I first weigh the whole thing, then divide by the number of serves!

Sorry Libby, your idea of an alcoholic is not accurate. Some dont need to drink constantly. Some binge on the weekends, some work up to a level of intoxication and just maintain that buzz for as long as they can, some alcoholics drink only beer, some only wine, some drink aftershave. If alcohol is an issue identified by…

Just as an aside, and speaking from experience with a number of alcholics in my spectrum of family and friends - YOU may not think you are affected by a six pack, but I bet the people around notice. They notice the slurred speech, the repetitive and often inappropriate comments, the hooded eyes, the sloppiness, the…

I'm a 1200 eater too, and never hungry enough to go off my routine. I dont eat breakfast apart from a couple of coffees, eat a small to moderate lunch and use most of my calories at dinner and early evening, when I am at my hungriest, and am most vulnerable to over eating.

Its entirely your choice based on preference and other ethical or moral positions you may have regarding the treatment of animals and almonds, and their impact on the environment!

Look - life happens to all of us - crappy relationships, crappy job, crappy whatever. But unless someone is holding you down and shoving food in your mouth, you are the only one who decides what you eat. If you want to lose weight you have to be conscious of everything you put in your mouth and its calorie value. Its ok to…

I too am an impatient person so the deal I made with myself was to toss the scale. I only get weighed when I see my doctor (about an ongoing issue, every 6-8 weeks or so in the last year) and then I get the numbers from her. It saves the agony of fluctuations affecting my emotions, and it forces me to recognize other…

The article is dated to 2008 - I am fairly confident that science has moved past its initial hysteria about artificial sweetners in the last 8 years. Use them or not - they are safe. Its just a matter of personal preference.

I have a couple of favourite cookbooks that I use - I will cruise through them one evening and decide what I want to eat for the week, then go and shop for those recipes. Even though there is only two of us, I make the full recipe for the leftovers, from which I can get lunch and maybe an extra meal if I fluff up say, left…

Looks like you have some difficult decisions to make.

Jazus - I feel blessed when I hear what some of you have to go through. I have been taking thyroid meds for 27 years. I got fat cuz I ate too much. I lost weight (77lbs as of yesterday) when I stopped doing that, with the help of MFP and some education. Good luck everyone!

I am different, and since I have lost 77 lbs since October doing this, I'm sticking to it. I weigh food how I eat it - I dont eat raw potatoes, so I am not going to weigh it raw. Weigh it after cooking, and then be careful to pick the appropriate entry from MFP's database - boiled, roasted, mashed plain etc. then if you…

Try stacking 50, 1lb blocks of butter on a table. Literally, that is what you have unloaded. Its a remarkable achievement, dont sell yourself short on this accomplishment. And remember, studies shows that for each pound of body weight lost, there is a 4-pound reduction in knee joint stress among overweight and obese people…

Hormonal imbalance (aka menopause) is something that can be managed without drug intervention, BUT you should discuss the options with your health care provider. I opted for HRT due to unbearable symptoms, ones that black cohosh couldnt begin to control. We are all different, and need different approaches. Choose what is…

Thats a good point janejellyroll - I would ask that question then if thats what I was going to order.

I try to make sure I always get the message "If you ate everyday like today, in 5 weeks you would weigh......". That means I have eaten enough, but not over my calorie goal. If I get the message "Based on what you ate today, you might not be eating enough...." I will try to find something that ups my calories by enough to…

If it was me, I would have the grilled marinated prawns on warm white Tuscan bean salad, and then for mains, I would have the grilled salmon with sauce on the side. My logic is that grilled means cooked without extra fat. Bean salad normally does not include a heavy, fatty dressing. Salmon is one of my favourite dishes to…

cerise_noir, I couldnt agree more. I just got weighed today at the docs - down 77 pounds from October last year, great blood pressure and bloodwork, and I havent cut out a thing - just moderated portions and frequency. And I do sweet f*** all for exercise too!! And I have hypothyroid. And I am old. Its just a calories…

I buy new clothes when the old ones cant be worn anymore. I have a great tailor but even she has her limits! Or I go get my nails done, ANYTHING but food!! No more birthday cakes at my house either (we are all well past our teen years!) My son had a birthday (31st) recently and we had smores over a campfire. Did you know…

It doesnt matter - just make sure that you pick the correct and corresponding value from the MFP data base.

Your freezer can be a big help at times like this. I freeze berries by spreading them out on a sheet pan and then wait till they are frozen then bag them up - that way they dont clump together. Unfortunately, this doesnt work well with strawberries. I freeze anything left over - bean sprouts can be frozen, though they are…

Virtually any vegetable is far more delicious than you can imagine (or fear) if you grill or roast them tossed in a little olive oil and some spices. Dont boil the crap out of them, I think even the vegetables get offended by that.

What is it about fruit or veg that scares you? Neither of them will bite you back!!

I really appreciate the versatility of chicken - I tend to use breasts and thighs for most of the recipes I use. You can change chicken by adding different spices, rubs or sauces, or even just cooking techniques such as grilling versus baking. They can be chopped up and stirfried, or left whole and cooked in a sauce or…
