  • The comment must be made of chemicals!
  • I am right there with you @LBuehrle8. I think the claims that anything in this thread has been snarky, a hateful attack or a "slap fight" are ridiculous. Responses have been completely rational and unemotional.
  • One thing about WW is that so much of the value is in the meetings. For me it was almost like going to a 12-step meeting - I had weekly accountability, and it was a great reminder of what I was trying to accomplish. It was also nice seeing the same people every week a lot of the time, and celebrating milestones with them.…
  • My husband has the Surge and loves it for the GPS capabilities. The Blaze allows you to use your phone's GPS, but with the Surge he can go for a run without his phone and it will track his route, distance, and other stats. I think that's the big differentiator for the Surge. If you aren't interested in that capability, I…
  • I didn't see anyone attack anyone in this thread, and I don't see how looking for evidence is unbecoming. The problem is that these are not opinions - you are presenting your statements as facts, and there just isn't credible evidence that I can find to back them up. If I say I like the taste of Diet Coke and you say you…
  • That horseradish/mustard example was a perfect analogy. And while I disagree with your opinion of Diet Coke, I am right there with you drinking Diet A&W!
  • So much is wrong with that article. “(Disclosure notice: Jampolis [one of the authors of the study] does consulting work for a soda company that uses Stevia, but not artificial sweeteners.)” The article’s main points: • Despite its name, it may not really be that diet friendly. But this is based 100 percent on correlation,…
  • Don't forget though that butter is fat. It is more natural than margarine, tastes much better and doesn't have the trans fats that margarine can, but I used to work with a guy who heard butter was better for him than margarine and he started slathering it all over everything he ate. Keep it in moderation and you will be…
  • @slim1 That's an excellent point. I lost 60 pounds on WW (PointsPlus) and maintained it for years. I really loved the program, and I went to meetings as well. I rejoined late last year to lose some weight I've recently put back on, and I also hated the new program and decided to switch to MFP. I'm really seeing that…
  • This is what I was thinking. I would ask for her help, but ultimately I agree with others that you need to figure out how to make it work, and it's not your wife's responsibility to make that happen. When I first started losing weight, I had certain treats that I could eat in small quantities that kept me on track when I…
  • This has been my experience too. Based on some research I read about circadian cortisol peak and insulin release in the morning, I started to delay my breakfast from when I first wake up (around 6:00 am) to around 9:00 am. It took me about a year to get used to it, but I am so much less hungry in the morning and it makes…
  • I find that Diet Coke actually curbs my cravings for sweets. When I feel like I need something sweet, if I have a Diet Coke it goes away. Maybe these cravings are more psychological than physiological, but I find it very helpful in cutting out calories that won't fill me up.
  • I was so happy to read the replies to this post. This morning at our safety meeting at work we had someone from the fitness centre come in and speak to us about healthy living. It was so difficult to sit through the misinformation. She chastised those who dared to raise their hands and admit that they foolishly don't eat…
  • It all depends on your overall body composition and how clothes fit you in general. SML-fitting clothes are intended to cover quite a range of sizes. When I went from 205 pounds to 145 pounds, I was constantly changing pants sizes (from a 16 down to a 6), but I was a large for shirts only at the very high end of my weight…
  • This is one of the best things I've ever read! Hilarious, but I also have to thank you for allowing me to experience a Paleo diet in five minutes of reading rather than in weeks of horror. I was right there with you every step of the way. I will stick to a sensible CICO deficit!
  • I love Fitstar.
  • I think completely bald is a great look on a man. When he is partly bald with hair just on the sides (the "friar tuck" look) it can be an aging look to me, but I feel like it's almost a confidence issue - like he's in denial or something. Also, a combover doesn't look good in my opinion, and carries the same confidence…
  • Also, I don't think enough this is promoted enough. It's the one thing that keeps me motivated to stick to my workouts. Even when exercise helps me with CICO, that isn't why I do it. The results take too long.
  • This is a very harsh change in mindset for a lot of people. We are told our whole lives to exercise to lose weight. I think when people first hear this, it's counterintuitive, and that's why it doesn't sink in. It's a great reminder here, though!
  • I went through this exact experience. I was so frustrated that I was eating and exercising like a thin, fit person, but I knew I wouldn't look like that person for months, regardless of the weight I had already lost. For me, I just had to make a concerted effort to change my focus. I stopped thinking about the number on…
  • I eat a lot of half portions in restaurants. I remember looking at restaurant menus and freaking about about the totals, until I realized that I don't need that much food most of the time. When I will eat the other half later I will take it home, but sometimes I won't, and it gets wasted. Yes, I did learn growing up that…
  • Black Magic Woman - Santana
  • I agree with the recommendation to get a second-hand model. We've had a couple of ellipticals that cost $200-300 and they feel rickety and break down very easily. We invested in one that was on sale for around $1,000 and it lasted for years.
  • The real benefit to caffeine in weight loss is that it can give you extra energy for your workouts, and you can potentially burn more calories that way. In and of itself, taking in caffeine doesn't cause you to burn a significant amount of fat.
  • I think this is a great idea, and your healthy habits are more likely to rub off on family and friends who might need encouragement themselves, more than if you just posted reports of your accomplishments!
  • McDreamy! And Avery.
  • You will do great! There are a lot of details, especially when you are using two different programs. I love using Fitbit and MFP together and I'm sure you will get the hang of it soon!

  • I'm in Calgary!
  • I also blame The Biggest Loser for people's unrealistic ideas of what is a good weekly weight loss. A friend of mine lost some weight through a franchise clinic in Canada called Dr. Bernstein that encourages extreme, fast weight loss. She was in her 20s, in great health when she started. She finally quit because she was…
