  • I have the actual Crock Pot brand (bought from Target, no fancy digital display) and I use completely variable cooking times, typically on low, though. I do pre-cook certain things first, like onions (just a quick saute in oil) because I don't like the flavors of these ingredients thrown in there raw or I think the texture…
  • Yeah, if I am eating at a small restaurant, and I order something like, say, eggplant parmigiana, I use a bigger chain like Olive Garden or Maggiano's as a starting point, but then I adjust based on portion size and/or oil content (the local independent Italian restaurant uses way less oil than most chains, for example).…
  • I made a lot of juice when I first got my juicer, and now I am down to doing it once a week, for Sunday brunch, which is the only time I drink juice (3 oranges and half a pineapple split between my husband and me). I think it tastes better than juice out of a carton, but of course is not pasteurized so has to be consumed…
  • Maybe 1 or 2 a week. I find myself unable to tolerate much animal fat these days (been a vegetarian for 26 years, not interested in becoming vegan). Too many eggs and I just feel queasy. And hardboiled egg yolks (well, any egg yolks other than scrambled) have always majorly grossed me out. I kind of miss egg salad…
  • I doubt it because mine shows nearly the same calories if I walk 1000 steps in 20 minutes or do 10 minutes of a kickboxing workout that counts about the same number of steps but is more difficult and gets my heart rate up. So I don't even sync my Fitbit to MFP. (I also have the Fitbit One so it doesn't actually track my…
  • I only work out at home, I have a lot of Beachbody DVDs and kickboxing DVDs and I have a Smith machine/cable machine and tons of kettlebells, dumbbells, a pull-up tower with high chair, and other random equipment, plus a treadmill and recumbent bike. It's much easier to drag myself to the basement after work than it is to…
  • There's not. I have a PhD in biochemistry and I work in a patent law firm and have worked on a few collagen-related applications and have done reading on many more as part of that work. There may be products marketed as "collagen builders" that have some of the amino acids found in collagen (it is rich in proline, if I…
  • I don't track macros (like I don't bother entering them for home-cooked items) but I probably come up "short" on protein every day too. My diet is probably at least 2/3 carbs (whole grains and such, not refined, for the most part). I have excellent bloodwork, my blood pressure is finally under control, and I am currently…
  • Lately, I have been banking calories during the week so I can eat out at a restaurant on Friday (when I don't get a chance to exercise). Seems to be working well for me so far. Rolling over should be quite similar.
  • I am finding this thread very interesting and thanks, all, for sharing your experiences. I will be 42 in a few weeks, had a hysterectomy just after I turned 40 (voluntary treatment for extremely large fibroid, seemed preferable to a myomectomy since I don't want kids), kept my ovaries, so I have to pay attention to signs…
  • I am a vegetarian but haven't been eating much in the way of eggs or cheese lately. Things I like for protein: nuts and nut butters, seeds (especially hemp but also chia in some circumstances), tofu, beans, some of the fake meat products are vegan (like Morningstar Farms "chicken" nuggets). Vegan Halo Top has protein but…
  • I'm on carvedilol for my blood pressure and it also reduces my heart rate so I just figured that data would not be as useful to me as it would to someone who was not taking medication. Although I probably would like looking at the data as well.
  • Thanks, those are good for a size reference.
  • Thanks, the Inspire does look like a good match for me, the price is not too different from what I paid for the One, and I see you can even buy a clip if you don't want to wear it on your wrist.
  • Fitbits aren't good at some non-step exercises. Mine records no steps at all when I use my recumbent bike. Not even when I put it on my shoe. Edit: If it's not recording steps, you may still get some heart rate data, depending on the model (mine doesn't do this).
  • Same, and my fat tolerance has gone down as I have gotten older (will be 42 soon). Can barely handle pizza anymore.
  • I find that when I get heartburn it's usually because I have a full stomach (that can include liquid) and I am slouching badly. If I sit up straighter (I have a desk job) I tend to have fewer problems. There is no reason to drink tons of water if your urine color is OK. The 8 glasses recommendation is often repeated but…
  • Sodium tripolyphosphate is not a carb. (Source: I have a PhD in chemistry.)
  • Lexx (used to be on the Science Fiction network back before it became SyFy or whatever the heck they call it now)
  • Also ask about fibroids. I got mine diagnosed at age 39 and although mine didn't affect my periods, some people do experience worsening periods due to fibroids.
  • My fibroid was just big all the time, unrelated to time of the month. (My problem now is that my abs are not wonderful after an abdominal hysterectomy but I am working on that.) I also now sometimes have bloating if I have eaten too much salt or occasionally too much food volume (I eat a lot of fiber so that can happen).
  • I don't track macros at all because it is just really not worth the time to me to input all the ingredients and weights into MFP for something I will eat once or twice and never again (my husband does the cooking and keeps tracks of weights and calories on a white board in the kitchen and then I create overall calorie…
  • I bank calories during the week (about 200/day) so I can eat out on Friday without doing a ridiculous workout first, but I don't really consider it cheating so much as looking at CICO on a weekly scale instead of a daily one.
  • I actually can't do it because I'm on medication I have to take with food (if I don't get at least 400 calories with the medication, I get dizzy and don't feel safe driving, etc., as I've experimented with this number a bit) twice a day, which for practical purposes (involving my job and not eating before doing cardio)…
  • This is what I came here to say. This is the only way to eat a grapefruit that ever occurs to me (because we had grapefruit spoons around the house when I was a kid). You only have to make one cut and the serrated edges on the spoon dig pretty much everything out. Grapefruit spoons are also good for scooping all the seeds…
  • I don't like water either, though I don't mind it so much when I exercise. I drink pitchers of iced tea, lots of hot tea, occasional diet sodas smoothies, etc. But there have been a lot of good suggestions for stir-in products. I find I don't care for the ones sweetened with stevia because it has an aftertaste (which I…
  • When I had oral surgery (gum grafts, so a somewhat different procedure) my periodontist prescribed a mouthwash that was some combination of prednisone, liquid benadryl, and some sort of -caine (lidocaine? benzocaine? I don't remember) compound. It was supposed to help with inflammation, swelling, and pain. I think you…
