I think your plan sounds great! The 50/50 custody sounds like it does give you some recharge time, which is great. Maybe now is the time that you feel like you have enough in the tank to start making some changes. Go for it!

Hi, I just wanted to post an encouragement to you! You can do it! You have a lot on your shoulders and practicing self care is very important. I personally would recommend making small changes that you feel you can keep up with forever. This is healthier and more sustainable than making huge changes that you might feel too…

That’s a great idea. Really great. I’m thinking I might do that, try to get PT through my GP’s office. Will have to wait till July because I’ll be away, but I like the idea a lot.

That is a great point!! I have been extremely bad about using my body as intended, in particular avoiding the squatting position. A few weeks ago, I could not do a single squat, and struggled to get up from the foor - despite normal weight. I’ve been working at it and while my progress is hardly impressive, I’m quite…

I can understand why you might think you had no muscle to lose, but it’s not so! Even if you were a lifelong couch potato, you still had (and have) muscle mass. Elderly people usually lose muscle mass over time even if they were never in any shape. So it’s not just athletic types who lose muscle mass when crash dieting. It…

To be clear, my back issue is not weights-related, I had it for some years and only recently started the exercise. I seem to strain it when bending over a lot, whether with housework or yardwork or whatever. I don’t “need” to increase my weight on OHP. I just can’t lift anywhere near what my arms can do. I’m lifting light,…

Sorry to hear you are struggling. A few thoughts: Losing 35 pounds in 2-3 months means you were losing at a rate of 3-4+ pounds per week. For people who have a lot of weight to lose, 2 pounds a week might be ok. For your stats, 1 pound a week might be ideal. The problem with losing 4 pounds a week for someone 160ish and…

Retroguy2000, I want to thank you for your suggestion of planks. I’ve started doing them daily, one minute at a time twice daily. Obviously it’s too early to have any real results but I really feel like they will be very useful to me.

Mother nature intended us to eat fruits and vegetables. But not dozens of pounds per year of refined cane sugar.

Interesting. If I understand correctly, this will shift some burden away from my spine and toward my core, shoulders, and arms? I will try that. My next overhead press day isn’t till Thursday but will give it a shot.

Yet another vote for fruit. Here is my experience with that - having successfully gotten control of my sweet tooth. When I was having cravings, I’d eat whole fruit instead, as much as I wanted. Did I want fruit instead of, you know, the other stuff? NO. It sounded UTTERLY DISAPPOINTING to me. Yet when I just sucked it up…

Wonderful goals, I loved reading them all (and the pic is also a great goal). I wanted to tell this little anecdote for the older people. When I was in my early 30s, I was into local farms for veggies and the like. I remember one day I was in a group of folks discussing local eating, and one attendee was a lady who I…

Since I already have standard plates I’ll just stick with them. I do think I will do squats, but again, I’m no athlete. I’m currently doing unweighted squats, so the idea that I would need a rack to take a bar heavier than I could otherwise lift, well, if that day comes I will be happy to figure something else out and…

Thanks for all the feedback! I didn’t see anything that would put me off a short barbell, so I think I’m going to go for it! If I get to the point where 80kg/176lb is too limiting lol I will be more than happy to celebrate by upgrading somehow. A short barbell is what I really want, was just not sure if there was an issue…

Perhaps you can gradually cultivate a new habit that you increase in frequency and duration. Maybe you will come to enjoy grabbing coffee somewhere, just to get out, and you like drinking it at the cafe rather than taking it to go. Perhaps you will be seeing a friend more often for whatever reason. Personally, while I…

That sounds fantastic, great idea. How long does it keep in the fridge? I miss going to the farmer's market, maybe I'll be in a position to start going again in the spring.

Oops, i was unclear about the ice cream. I didn't eat any, I just meant that it wasn't an act of willpower that I abstained, but that I didn't even get the urge.

Yes, I do think I am losing muscle mass while gaining fat, not because I was in any shape before but things are worse, plus maybe aging is making it more rapid. Plus in addition I may have some swelling, don't know why. Hoping to get it back under control, and exercise is on my list but I felt like I wanted to figure out…

So today I logged breakfast. It has: 7g fiber 11g fat 11g protein 36g carbs 301 calories Thinking the fiber is important too. Today I had mixed berries instead of an apple, because I plan to eat an apple and hummus for a snack. Anyway, just posting this to log the macros for this meal since it will change later as I log…

Charbabe, I love the idea. I don't think I personally need to actually make the meal ahead of time, but I think I need to know exactly what I'm going to eat. A lot of times I think I delay lunch just because I don't know. And then that leads to trouble. I could decide as late as breakfast, but I need to decide by then, and…

Lynn - yes, I seem good on braekfast and fall apart by lunch or so. Great idea to study the macro distribution; I'll do it. I will consider the doctor suggestion. I just feel pretty frustrated with doctors; I'll go and they'll treat me like "why are you even here?" and I feel like I wasted my time and am crazy. They never…

Cahgetsfit - yeah I think getting the carbs right is key. I'm not trying to go low carb but I also have to watch and moderate simple carbs. I notice pasta makes me feel crummy. (So why do I eat it? Ugh. Kid wants it. It's easy and fast. Etc. Gotta do better.) My lunch of egg and sausage today wasn't typical, but an attempt…
-
Phx - I agree that feeling crummy isn't right. A bit hungry, okay, crummy, no. So I'm just trying to figure out if I can change something for the better. Novus - shaky, yes, but I don't think light headed. If I eat something sweet - I love ice cream though I try to moderate, or a bowl of cereal like Special K or Rice…

MsOpus, okay, you're suggesting I just start logging and don't worry yet about the calorie deficit. And maybe I will learn something. I like that, I will start tomorrow, thank you. Lynda, I joined MFP three years ago and successfully lost some weight. I stopped logging and maintained my weight for a good while, but earlier…

I'm not asking about losing weight without feeling hungry. I am asking how to deal with the physical weakness, feeling crummy. I haven't gotten started yet. I am not in a calorie deficit. I am asking how to deal with this problem first.
-
I don't think the problem is too few calories - and I haven't even started to restrict yet (and I'm not even tracking either - will track when I solve this first problem). My calorie goal would be around 1200 but I'm definitely eating more than that. I think my breakfast is probably 400-450 and my lunch around 500 alone,…

And I know it's the dressing that makes up most of those calories.

OK, so I will get some chicken into that salad, sounds unanimous. To be clear, I'm eating about 500 calories of salad. Too few calories is not the problem, lol. But I'll try putting substantial chicken in there and reducing the salad - like saving half for the next day - and see if it helps me to keep chugging along.
