  • Good morning! Today is the one-year anniversary of my first swim class. I'm celebrating by going to swim class. Have a great day, my friends! <3 Larisa in Seattle
  • I've taught English, German, Chinese, sewing, and knitting....but these were complete beginners, and the poor lifeguard had clearly never taught before. I was comfortable helping them get their legs up near the surface, kick from the hip instead of just the knee, that kind of thing.
  • Class today. Five absolute beginners, a lifeguard subbing in as teacher, and me. I did some laps and helped teach; what else could I do. At least I felt useful  Then I went and lifted weights.
  • Lenora, Prayers; you got it. Praying things get way better for you really quickly. <3 Larisa
  • Thank you! Yeah it's been three weeks so far. That's not really unheard of, I know...and I'm under enormous stress right now, trying to find a job and/or new clients for my freelance biz. So I'll just keep plugging away, and get what I get. I did have a non-scale victory this past week: I swam five days in a row for the…
  • Yes, thank you! I'm trying to do the same. Just stick to the program, and not worry about how fast results come. I also keep reminding myself that I'm a former-and-future-athlete, and consistency, discipline, determination, these are what athletes do. If you knew how often in a day I say "this is what athletes do", or ask…
  • Oooh ski machine! I wish I had access to one of those. :)
  • Good morning, ladies! Argh I'm in that place...where it feels like I may never lose weight again. What are some tricks y'all use to keep motivated while waiting out a plateau? Larisa in Seattle
  • I was all ready to go swim today, when I discovered my wallet had gone adventuring..probably on the bus, yesterday. Harumpf.
  • Both seem like understandable responses. Yikes, indeed!
  • I have two sisters. One is about 100 lbs heavier than me, and lazy and makes excuses. The other, like me, exercises, watches what she eats, and, also like me, is definitely not thin. So I would say excuses are a piece of the picture, but so are biological factors like genetics, hormones, gut flora, etc.
  • It controls epilepsy...or in my case, post-head-injury migraines. I miss fruit though. I mostly can have berries, cherries, and kumquats...but I do love apples and watermelon and cantaloupe. And the myth that ketosis means you can eat as much as you want and still lose weight? Hah.
  • Food scale for the win! I just confirmed I'd been underestimating my cheese consumption by nearly half. Being on a ketogenic diet, cheese is a frequent snack/mini-meal for me, pre- or post-workout, and I've been so hungry lately...now I know why. Moar cheese! Heh, me and my lil misadventures... :smirk: Happy…
  • I think it will be adorable with cap sleeves. :sunglasses:
  • [ It's CUTE! <3
  • Yah, thanks! Between that and my inch loss, they said I'd have a shot at nationals, if I had posed in a bikini. Ha! I guess I didn't want it bad enough.
  • I set big, audacious fitness goals for myself. Not completely crazy goals, but enough to excite me. I joined a fitness contest, and won my age bracket. Now I'm working up to competitive swimming. I tell myself, if I want to be an athlete, I have to make the choices an athlete would make. Would an athlete skip their work…
  • I get super red; it's my complexion as much as anything, and I notice I sweat a lot more when I'm doing new stuff...I'm told it's because of the neurological challenge. Sweating is good for you, very detoxifying. Just be sure to replace your electrolytes.
  • Hahaha so much this!
  • I aim for four times a week, and lifting weights the other three days, but this past week I made it five days in a row (did both, one day...followed by going to bed four hours early ), and on a bad week, I'm lucky to make it twice, i.e. to my two classes. When I first started a few months ago, I had so little…
  • Not sure if PMS or just hangry... good morning.
  • HUGE caveat: I'm just a beginner, but I have also been getting some big improvements in my freestyle ("flutter") kick by kicking with no board, head in line, and breathing (bilaterally) when I have to. I have not enjoyed kickboards for the very reason that they don't feel the same as swimming. "whip kick" is the breast…
  • HOLY COW I WON THE FITNESS COMPETITION (for age 50-59, for Seattle) and have been submitted to the national level--which I will not win, because I wore actual clothing for before and after photos, hahaha. But still, how fun! Larisa in Seattle
  • Thank you, Chris in sunny MA! Some of us single women need to hear this kind of thing now and then.
  • I lost 20 once, through fasting for 21days. That's not what I did it for, though, and I'm not sure I'd recommend prolonged fasting as a weight loss method. And I'm a big, sturdy woman...you couldn't pay me to weigh less than 180...so that's a factor. Hi Ladies! I've been lurking lurkily, like a lurky lurker, and exercising…
  • Fifth day in a row of kicking my lil heart out. If I don't get good, we can't blame laziness
  • I want to say I swam today, but I suppose "jumped around in the pool, twirling and playing...and did some kicking drills" is more accurate. Then I did back and legs in the weight room. It was a grand day.
  • In class today I got to show off all my kicking progress. I really surged ahead this week, pun notwithstanding. I still have an awful lot of work to do, but at least I'm improving. :)
  • Seriously, I have not met a more welcoming, friendly bunch, than the folks at my local pool. :) YESS and it will increase your happiness. Hooray!
  • I always wanted to learn to swim, and it was the swimsuit thing that was stopping me, too. One day I got sick of letting it stop me, bought a swimsuit and got started. I'm SOOO GLAD I did. You know the saying that courage is feeling the fear and doing it anyway? It was like that. No I don't want to be in public in a…
