I have a terrier mix with very short legs. When I first adopted him, he let me know when he was tired by just flopping down and refusing to move. He's in much better shape now, and even with the shorty Russell legs, he easily does 5K with me (granted, I'm walking it more than running but he'd prefer to run the whole thing).

I can ride both English and Western (used to jump when I was young), so now I ride more Western style (neck reining) but using my English saddle because I like the close contact and having the horse move via leg commands; I dabble in a bit of dressage.

Some teas really do have proven therapeutic qualities. My Hungarian grandma was a big proponent of chamomile, and here's some reliable backing for its healthy properties: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2995283/ You'll find scientific backups for some other teas/ailments, too, but nothing for detox. It's not…

Apparently my cats keep having kittens in the litter box. Here I thought giving them the Bob Barker treatment would stop that.
-
Sigh. A quick search showed that you're right. Isn't detoxing your liver akin to moistening your glass of water?
-
I can't wait for some woo peddler to come up with "liver tea."

Interesting. the study I found only mentioned pre-diabetes, but your link indicates that it's actually helpful for diabetes, too. Thanks for the added info.

So true. I previously boarded him across the road from a state park with miles and miles of trails. People who come for the theme parks have no idea how much natural beauty isn't all that far away. At least they're starting to promote eco tourism more now, with the air boats, horseback riding, etc.

As all the others said, that guy was full of BS. I have a friend who is well over 200 pounds and who's finished a few 10Ks. He is my inspiration to get my butt doing C25K because if he did it, I have not excuse at 186. I'm just waiting to be sure that my foot problem is completely healed and then I'm getting out there to…

Leslie is pretty mild as far as workouts go, but she gets you moving and you can do her workouts at home so there are no excuses. Back when I was more fit, I used her workouts and stepped them up with hand and ankle weights. They were part of my overall exercise program.

I book a massage or hot stone pedicure or something else that's pampering to my body and that helps relieve stress overall (I have a stressful job, so since I've cut out my stress eating, that gives me an excuse for healthy alternatives that also pamper me).

I was a former Fitbit fan but have the Garmin Vivosmart HR now and love it. Originally I wanted GPS but realized my phone is fine for that. I definitely wanted heart rate and also something that tells me to get off my butt and move, and the Vivosmart HR does that, plus tracks sleep, gives me text and call notifications,…

Central FL, where we're rapidly losing our horsey areas, although Ocala is still horse country. I board Figment in a rural area that's just a stone's throw from all the new high tech medical development.
-
French or Belgian?
-
Me too! My first horse was also an Appy, although mostly pay with just some white snowflakes on his rump. Figment is definitely at the other end of the spectrum.

While studies seem to back up its effects on PCOS, there doesn't seem to be much out there on its other supposed effects. Do a little Google Fu on its active ingredients for more information.

I'm especially pleased because it gives me ammo to redirect myself when I don't feel like putting in my last steps of the day or I crave a late night snack. I think of the loss and remind myself that I want to lose more, not undo that little progress.

21 Day Fix is basically portion control using overpriced containers. Get your own containers and a scale, as others here have recommended. Don't put a certain number of days on your plan. It's a lifetime change, so that's what you should aim for. Portion control and more calories out than in. That's the magic formula.

I would talk to your doctor or go to a running store to get your gait analyzed and get a good fitting shoe. My personal preference is minimalist shoes, and I had some back when I was doing C25K a couple of years ago and absolutely loved the fit and comfort. Then I developed plantar fasciitis, and part of the cause was…

Hello everyone! I love all the wonderful dog photos. Here's my walking companion, Bolt. He's a 14 pound rat terrier/Jack Russell mix with high energy that makes him an excellent walking companion. Olaf is his favorite toy, although he's pretty ratty and needs to be retired now, after quite a few repairs. The only problem…

Sorry to revive an old thread, but I just tried kombucha and did a search to learn more about it. I'm a juice drinker and found it in the juice case, so I got a couple of bottles out of curiosity. I had no idea that it's supposed to have all those health benefits. I'm a skeptic of those sorts of claims anyway, but I…

I'm a huge almond milk fan and use it in almost everything, but coffee is where I draw the line. That's my one place where I get a half and half indulgence (no sugar, can't stand it sweet).

Welcome! I'm a little older (51), but I know what it's like to work way too many hours. I lost, then regained, so I'm here to lose once again. Feel free to add me!
-
Welcome! I'm 51 and from Florida too (and yes, also feeling old, although definitely not in state of mind). You'll find some great motivation and support here.

Thanks for the ketogenic info. I poked around online and also found some good info. on Paleo Leap, all backed up with links to studies and a good layout of the pros and cons. It's very interesting, as I'd never heard about that type of diet before.
-
I'm definitely using it as motivation. I'm doing better with exercise than eating, but the eating habits are slowly but surely changing too (it's a great thing to remind myself about when I'm craving a carb snack at night). We have a book of paleo slow cooker recipes that we just got, not because it was paleo but because…

I would love to get off of statins. I've been on them for decades because of my family history of young deaths due to heart attacks. My current doctor thinks it's possible. My main problem there is triglycerides and I know my diet plays a big role. He wants me to watch that and to also take a fish oil supplement. For the…

It's good to see these success stories! I go back in three months for follow-up bloodwork, so I'm using that as motivation to make my lifestyle changes NOW. I'm a walker, and I also have plenty of exercise DVDs from my prior weight loss, so I have no excuse not to exercise even when it's too hot outside (summer's here…

I don't know if you want friends in their 50s, but if so, feel free to add me. 51 here, at least physically. Mentally it's a heck of a lot younger.

I thought it would motivate me, but so far it hasn't. My gym is undergoing massive renovations in the locker rooms so I've been using that as a lame excuse to avoid it (although really, the sign "Workmen will be in and out" in the women's locker room is more than a tad creepy).
