You can do it! And if the water isn't quite hitting the mental "snack spot," you can try adding something like a vitamin C tablet or no-sugar-added squash (juice concentrate) to it, so you get the taste/treat aspect of it without the calories. In a general sense, do you have any "willpower tips?" There are a lot of…

Background: I started using MyFitnessPal because my partner wanted to lose weight. I knew I certainly had some downward wiggle room myself, but I had no idea how much. I was still in the "healthy weight range" for my height (according to BMI), but I was on the upper half, and my frame is so small I should be at the…

I feel you on the low calorie goals. I'm a guy just under 5'2", and if I eat the recommended MFP minimum for males, I actually gain weight every week. Speaking to my doctor led me to a calorie limit well below MFP's male minimum (heck, even below the female minimum) to lose weight, and not much more than that to maintain!…

Ridiculous weekend - events both days and loads of calories. I sympathize with where you guys are coming from! The good news: I'd saved up a deficit over the week so that I could try to balance out the weekend. The bad news: it wasn't enough, so I've got to make up the remainder over the next couple of days. Mini-goals for…

I know how you feel. I just ate a pastry and a half I wasn't planning on having from French bakery stall at our local market. (Where, ironically, I only went for fresh, healthy vegetables...) I haven't even counted tonight's dinner in my log yet and I'm already over my calories for the day. On the bright side, your bacon…

You can do it! (I know how you feel, though. I have the same problem. Perhaps moving dinner later in the evening would help?)

Lowest weights yet for me and my partner! Hopefully this is a trend (or at least a lasting situation), rather than just a hiccup in the plateau we've been on for the past two months... This weekend will be a tough one, because we are doing a fair bit of physical activity, but we also have a couple of unavoidable…

You can do it! The scales will help, and this group is so supportive it's great. (Tiny people solidarity! I'm from the UK, 5'2" with low metabolism and muscle mass, so I know what it's like not to be allowed to eat much...)

I've heard nothing but good things about this combination! One day, when I have that many calories free, I'd love to try it. (My partner also likes peanut butter with sultanas or currants, although I think that's possibly better suited to celery than bread.)

I do other things as well as walking (like using the Sworkit app, which lets you exercise in five-minute increments), but I wanted to let you know that I incorporate at least one long walk (2-6 hours) per week into my exercise regimen. It does help! It won't do a lot, especially on its own, but every calorie you burn while…

For the record, at my "official" Saturday morning weigh-in (i.e., before Sunday's indulgences), I was at my lowest weight to date. That said, it was only 0.2 lbs lower than my second-lowest, and still within the ~3-ish lb range I've been hovering in for the past two months. Wish me luck over the next couple of weeks of…

That looks amazing, and totally worth it! And tomorrow's the start of a new week. On we go! (I was well over my calorie goal today, but it was an "event" day so I was expecting that and it didn't blow my mini-goals. I'm going to make it up by showing extra restraint and saving calories over the next two days, and I'm going…

How did it go? Did you have your chocolate - and was it delicious? That sounds like so much fun! I'm off on my own "sweet treat" this morning (Belgian hot chocolate and a jam-and-cream scone at a farm), but I'm optimistic that the 5.5 hours of walking I need to do today will help me burn it off if I watch what I eat for…

Had a good couple of days. Working hard to save up enough deficit to make up for my calorie overage on Tuesday, and as of tonight, I should be overall in the green again! It's not easy to earn so many extra calories and then leave them on the table, but technically I ate them all ahead of time on Tuesday night... I'll…

I don't often feel "hunger" in the usual sense, although for the past few days I've been really noticing it. However, I often find that - despite not feeling hungry - I get weak, shaky, or can't keep up my normal walking pace and have to slow down. Unfortunately, I'm usually on my way somewhere at that point and not in a…

Congratulations!

Ironically, I managed to blow several of these mini-goals yesterday (including one of my freebies!), literally the day I joined up here. Surprise evening changes of plans resulted in way more calories than I was expecting, plus missing my aikido class and having no chance to make up for it with anything else. This isn't a…

Slow-cookers are great! I have a 4.5L one that makes enough for 4-6 servings even without side dishes. Rice cookers can also make your life easier, if you've got the money, counter space, etc. for one (and they don't just do rice - I've done oatmeal, pancakes and more in mine). For breakfasts, consider nutritious food…

Seconding the slow-cooker! You can prepare a meal in ten minutes (or even buy pre-packed bags of slow-cooker meal ingredients at the shops) and then leave it to cook all day. Dinner takes almost no work, is ready when you want it, and makes your house smell amazing! Depending on your calorie allowance, you might be able to…

It depends on your personal circumstances! Are you comfortable training around others, or do you prefer to do it alone (my partner, for instance, doesn't like to be watched)? Do you need accountability, or are you very self-motivated? Do you enjoy the kinds of exercise or the classes offered by your local gym? Can you…

Joining in if you'll have me! I like supporting and being supported, and this thread has such a friendly tone I'd really like to be a part of it. I've been on a plateau for a month and a half and my partner, who's doing this with me, recently got his calorie allowance bumped up by his doctor. With him eating nearly double…

Yep, I definitely need to work on patience. (I'm not so much impatient as over-anxious. If I can just convince myself that a speedbump is only a speedbump, I don't mind a long wait!) As to the calories, I think I'm hesitant to bump up the calories without consulting the doctor again, but I'm managing to "let go" of the…

Thanks very much! Yes, it seems to make more sense now that I know that increasing strength workouts = increasing muscle water retention. (I know that for me, over a pound of actual muscle in a week is totally impossible, but I didn't know exercise could add weight in other ways!) Thank you for that article, too. I'm going…

I'm afraid it is my GP - I don't have access to a dietitian, unfortunately. We went through the process of determining my calorie needs in terms of BMR/no exercise (which I later cross-checked with several different online calculators, not that I'm claiming they're accurate, but they were all within the same approximate…

Good to know! I didn't think it was possible to put muscle on that fast (especially for me, as I tend toward hypotonia), but more research reveals that adding new exercise can also cause muscles to retain water, which seems like a more realistic idea about what might be going on. Thanks for the reassuring words!

Don't worry - I don't expect to lose 1 lb/week. I'm just worried at not losing anything. I've been in the same 3 lb range for about six weeks now. I'd like to either see at least a slight downward trend over that kind of time or, if I'm just not going to lose any more weight, I would really like to be able to maintain at a…

Fair point well made. (Sorry, it wasn't so much the pound gain as its unexpectedness, combined with the frustration of the overall plateau. But you're absolutely right. I probably fluctuate more than that over a week anyway without knowing it.)
-
Thanks! I'll try to have patience. When I see short-term bumps, I tend to get nervous due to the lack of wiggle room, but that's something I'll have to work on. Meanwhile, it's comforting to hear that the same thing happened to you and you're on your way down now - I'll try to focus on that as I wait to see what happens…

That would make more sense, wouldn't it? Yeah, unfortunately it just means it's really freaking difficult for me to build or tone muscle. Think "pre-serum Steve Rogers," but not skinny, just small...

Thanks! This is really interesting information. I've never been told I have low thyroid activity, although I suppose I could always ask a doctor. In the meantime, though, I'll work on trying to improve measuring and tracking - perhaps at times when I'm forced to estimate food, I'm being too generous to myself...
