  • I have an absolutely tiny frame. I'm male and 5'2", and I still have visible (grabbable) excess body fat when I weigh 102 lbs. My wrist size yields a "small" frame, but my elbow says I'm medium (ahahaaa no).
  • Thanks! My centre hasn't got one (just GPs and nurses), but I've booked an appointment with a GP to ask about thyroid testing (suggested by a nutritionist friend-of-a-friend), so I can ask about a referral to a dietitian based on metabolism and my seemingly weird calorie needs. Fingers crossed!
  • I do have pretty low muscle mass, and I'm hypotonic as well. I don't lift weights (don't own any and can't afford a gym), but I do bodyweight training and aikido, both of which should contribute to muscle development. I suppose I could try cutting out the morning cardio and replacing it with more strength/bodyweight…
  • I wish! Unfortunately, I live in the UK. You can't see a dietitian on the NHS (i.e., for free) unless you're obese or have a medical disorder, and I can't afford the cost of a private consultation.
  • Well, the issue is really that 1000 calories seems to be my maintenance. Going up to 1200 results in steady weight gain, so it's not so much that I'm trying to lose (although on my frame and with my amount of muscle, 110 lbs is a little more body fat than I need). It's that I don't want to gain and any modification or…
  • This is true! I should probably try to be less anxious about it. However, it has been a steady weight gain over the past several weeks with only slight modifications to what I'm doing, so I'm hesitant to keep going for much longer given that it's not going up and down - only up...
  • Yep - and I've been back to my doctor several times; in fact, I think they're getting annoyed at the fact that I keep coming in to verify that I'm doing the right things. I do get fairly balanced nutrition, although I know I need to work a bit harder on protein (and I'm a fairly atypical male at my size and metabolism, in…
  • I'm 5'2" with an unusually small frame and low metabolism. I used to eat 1000 calories a day with a doctor's permission - it was totally doable, but apparently made me grumpy. Right now, I eat 1200 calories a day along with a reasonable amount of exercise. My diary isn't public, but here's a place where you can find a lot…
  • This is entirely apocryphal, but I was recently told by a doctor that he suggested 1.25 L (about 5 American cups) of water per 30 kg (about 66 lbs) of body weight. So for you, I guess, about 3.5 L (about 14 American cups)?
  • If you can convince Pizza Express to do you a children's meal, the pizzas are just as big as the "light" adult ones, just as tasty (if you don't mind the less imaginative toppings), and lower in calories. Plus, you get a free appetizer, dessert and drink. (The appetizer is dough balls, which frankly never fit into my…
  • So glad I'm not the only one! I felt bad having missed it on literally the second day of the challenge. Planning to do 20 extra minutes this afternoon to make up for it, though! You can do it, and we'll all help and support!
  • I'll join! I'll fit in ten extra minutes of exercise each day above and beyond what I already do (so my regular things won't count). Sounds fun - and manageable, which is key! Today, my ten minutes was jogging in place (boring, but convenient) and I've just done it!
  • @jm216 and @71lmf , thank you so much for the encouragement! @cjdalla , don't worry - weight loss goes in fits and starts, not steady decreases! I bet you'll see a big improvement next week and be really proud of yourself then. In the meantime, be proud of sticking to your goals and working hard! For myself, it turns out I…
  • Bit nervous about tomorrow's weigh-in. I've stuck completely to my goals this week - done all my workouts, attended every aikido class, gone running every lunch hour, eaten back all my exercise calories but stayed under my limit - but I feel like I've slid back. I'm sure it's all in my head, but it certainly seems like…
  • Based on the example meals you gave: - Can you slice your bread thinner? If it'll go off, put it in the freezer. Alternatively, mix it more and let it rise more so that you get more air in it and each slice is fewer calories. - How big is a serving size of peanut butter? The "everyday value" (cheapest) version at my local…
  • As others have said, you can't spot-reduce. Your body decides where the fat comes off, unfortunately; not you - and belly fat is usually the first to appear and the last to disappear. For general tips, though, this thread is useful: http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/1161603/so-you-want-a-nice-stomach/p1
  • Some things my partner and I do (we have very different calorie and dietary limits): - make a double or triple batch of dinner, often in the slow-cooker so that our active cooking time is minimal, and take the leftovers for lunches - batch-cook meals at the weekend and portion them out for lunches (good examples: stew,…
  • I discovered not too long ago that I'm dairy-intolerant, although I don't know for sure what aspect of dairy is the culprit. I didn't know what kept making me ill - so much so that sometimes I couldn't walk after eating something containing milk! I find that things like milk and cream are the worst for me, whereas Greek…
  • I've never heard of Plexus Slim, but I'll look into it! And we'll definitely give salads a go. We actually eat them fairly regularly (usually with sliced ham or chicken, tinned tuna, or boiled eggs for protein) for lunch or dinner - but an afternoon snack salad might do the trick.
  • True! I think I'll ask if he'll "trial" fewer of the bread-type items and fruits, along with more of the proteins and vegetables, and see how a week of that goes. I want him to enjoy what he's eating so that he can keep doing it indefinitely, but you're absolutely right that there's got to be a balance.
  • Thanks! We used to make overnight oats with Greek yoghurt, but haven't done that lately. Something like that, or even just a fruit and yoghurt parfait minus oats, would probably provide sweetness without sacrificing goodness, and we could add eggs for protein, fat and fullness without blowing his calorie limits. Great…
  • Agreed - he definitely seems to stay fuller when he has eggs or lean meat for breakfast; it's just a matter of not liking them as much as he likes sweeter breakfasts. I think I'll see if he's interested in doing a trial week of savoury breakfasts, more raw vegetables for volume and fibre, and higher-protein snacks (without…
  • Thanks! I'm going to try to do that - several people in this thread have suggested ways of increasing protein, and some of them (like more eggs) will add fat as well. I could also try adding avocado for more healthy fat, as I know he likes that. Hopefully, those things combined with added fibre and volume from raw…
  • You're right that he could certainly be eating more protein. He gets most of his from eggs and Greek yoghurt at breakfast (although we sometimes have breakfasts that include meat, like lean chicken sausage or turkey bacon or sliced ham) and meat or fish at dinner (usually lean chicken or turkey breasts, this week a lot of…
  • He's about 5'7", 165 lbs. I think he selected "1 lb/week" in the setup wizard, but I'm not sure. Weirdly, back when he had a lot more to lose, he selected "2 lb/week" and it suggested a 1200-calorie limit for him. He tried that, found it totally unsustainable because he couldn't get full, and we bumped it higher ourselves.…
  • Agreed! He's the same way, but unfortunately his "foods that I like" list overlaps perfectly with the "foods that don't fill me up" list. We've got to find some way of balancing them out - because enjoying what he eats and feeling constantly hungry is unsustainable as a lifestyle, but so is feeling full and hating…
  • We usually fit half a banana into breakfast one way or another (into a smoothie, mashed into porridge, sliced on cereal), but we could definitely get more protein into the non-savoury ones by adding things like chickpea flour! I tend to forget that there are protein supplementing options other than the hideously expensive…
  • In general, MyFitnessPal tends to overestimate calorie burn - but depending on your stats, to be honest, 400 calories doesn't seem horrifically wrong for that amount of exercise. I'm *tiny* (5'2", under 110 lbs) and I'm pretty sure the app would (probably inaccurately) log about that much for *me*, so it doesn't sound like…
  • Hope everyone had a great weekend! It sounds like we're all working hard on our goals, so I bet it's going to be a great week for us all. I'm trying something new this week, eating back all of my exercise calories (a terrifying prospect, since we all know MyFitnessPal tends to wildly overestimate them) while increasing my…
  • I've heard this before (and the link posted upthread is super useful, too). But does anyone know where these numbers came from? I know that every person is different, but how did these get established as the sort of general "ideal" - what's the reasoning?
