  • It's a club no one wants to join. I knew it was coming, as I had gestational diabetes, and then 8-10 years later my random blood draws during my physicals kept climbing higher. Was officially diagnosed a little over 2 years ago (A1C was 7.2). I switched to a moderate carb diet (targeting < 120/day) and added interval…
  • Maybe I'll give the nutritionist a shot. When I had gestational diabetes in 2004, I had a horrible meeting with a nutritionist that insist I up my carbs to a minimum of 200 carbs a day. My perinatologist was the one to turn me towards a path of reduced carbs without going into ketosis. Of course I was also testing 4x/day…
  • Thanks for the responses. I'm not ready to give up all carbs/grains - yet. It's frustrating because insurance covers only 1 BG check a day, and with the horrible machine/strip/lancet combo they mandate I use, it takes 3 blood draws and at least 2 strips to get a reading. I know I can skip days, and that it's clearly a lot…
  • I don't think my next a1c is until later this spring, but my fasting numbers (which have always been my worst) have improved dramatically since I doubled down on exercise. I'm now either walking for an hour a day or doing intervals on the recumbent bike at the gym for 45 minutes - 5 times a week. My fasting number is now…
  • Just wanted to offer some encouragement. I was diagnosed in June with a 9.9% a1c. I eliminated sugar (<5 g per meal) and greatly reduced my carbs. I went back for a follow up in November and my a1c was 5.7%. I also started walking, specifically following lunch, and that has really improved my bg readings. You can do this!
  • Down to 95 today (2 hours after my afternoon snack + exercise) - felt really good. Lowest I've been in the last month since diagnosis.
  • How often do you measure? I had gestational diabetes 13 years ago (so knew I would likely develop type 2), but was shocked to find out I was only allowed to test my BG once a day, due to insurance restrictions. Once just seems too few to really understand how my body reacts to foods. That said, mine was 123 today (2 hours…
  • I was just diagnosed a little over a week ago - it's been a struggle. My BG was 197 in the office, and my a1c was 9.9! I've been eliminating sugar and eating reduced carbs, as well as exercising every day, and have got it down from the 200's to 123 today. Still not there, but hoping to continue the trend and bring it in…
