  • What works for moonlights doesn't work for you, and vice-versa. I don't think it's helpful for you to essentially call moonlights out; your tone suggests you think she's either lying, or exaggerating. But look -- her diet works FOR HER. The diet you describe would be an absolute disaster for me, with all the bread and ice…
  • If I'm hungry just before bed I eat a tablespoon of almond butter. Tastes wonderful and fills me up. Yum. Or I make a bomb with coconut oil, almond butter, cocoa powder, plus sweetener to taste. Again, yum.
  • :D And I've been there.
  • Bio-identical hormone replacement can be an incredible boon for us. Gets rid of the nasty symptoms and allows you to sleep, leaving you rested for whatever you have to do (including exercise and diet).
  • Evidence?
  • B)
  • That sounds like my addiction/reward. Steam, GOG.com, EA. I must have 200 games waiting to be played.
  • I used to be able to lose weight by the calorie-deficit-only means, back when my body actually worked the way it's siupposed to (i.e. when I was about 18 years old). Fast forward 40-odd years, and I can no longer tolerate how hungry I get if I try to include high-carb foods into my daily diet while still attaining the…
  • Does anyone know how the calorie content of food is actually measured? And does anyone know if the method of measurement is really accurate?
  • I'm not losing much at all, but I think I'm still having water retention problems (rings that fit me three days ago are now too tight again, as are some of my clothes). It's a chronic problem for me, one that my naturopath is working on with me, with the thought that hormone imbalances are stopping any real weight loss. I…
  • I have Hashimoto's. I was symptomatic for over 3 decades before finally being diagnosed; during that time I was treated to the "mental illness" model of thyroid treatment, which as many of us know involves antidepressants and lots of counseling revolving around one's alleged lazy, negative attitude towards life. I was then…
  • When trying to sleep is more stressful than just giving up and staying awake.
  • You're far more likely to get better health care from a licensed N.D. here in British Columbia than you are from a G.P. They tend to be more aware of recent research, and they treat the whole body instead of the isolated part. No N.D. would listen to a list of physical symptoms and respond by treating you for an alleged…
  • My ACV didn't work for my extreme heartburn today, but a tablespoon of high-fat (11%) Greek yogurt did the trick.
  • I'll check those out next time I need some. It really depends on whether I can can get them on Amazon.ca as opposed to Amazon.com. But anyway, It was a relief - especially as I didn't have nearly as much sodium as I've been ingesting lately.
  • My previous doctor i Vancouver was a huge advocate of low carb (and, incidentally, high magnesium) diets.
  • It's pretty expensive, though. The one I bought was on sale for $30.00, for what would be around a 45-day supply. Oh well. If it works I can keep going on the low carb.
  • I think I may finally have a handle on this. I bought some serious magnesium bisglycinate. I took a dose of 1,000 mg last night and had one small cramp.
  • I LOVE eating in restaurants. Salads with meat or seafood. Bunlesss burgers with everything on them and extra salad. Steaks. Sashimi. The list is endless.
  • "I went to the doctor and asked her to check if there was anything thyroid related. All of my labs came back beautiful." Did you actually see the labs? Did you get a copy? I ask because most doctors haven't got any real idea about thyroid disease; not how to diagnose it, and not how to treat it. Your TSH may have fallen at…
  • The fruit in our neighbour's gardens is ripening, so I ate an apple yesterday to add a big chunk of carbs. I'll do that for a week and see how it goes. I'm hoping that will be enough, because I really enjoy eating low carb. It's so simple. I've decided against adding grains. My brain just doesn't register them as food any…
  • I would say just take it slowly. It took me a while to get over the whole fat=bad thing. You may find that once you realize how nice and full you stay on the higher fat intake, and how much less food you need as a result, you'll feel good about it. It might take a couple of weeks or so, but you'll get there.
  • Basically, I get my carbs from yogurt and cheese, nuts, and vegetables, mostly salad vegetables. The odd night I might make something like a vegetable curry with coconut milk in it. I wuld say I'm hovering at around 30-40 carbs these days. But you know, I was on Atkins three years ago for about 6 months, and I had no…
  • OK. That's it. I took over a tablespoon of pink salt yesterday. I had potassium pills. I took 800 mg of magnesium citrate AND rubbed magnesium oil all over myself before bed. And STILL I had foot cramps from 3:30 a.m. until now, when I finally gave up. That's the pattern. Even if I drink salty water just before bed, even…
  • Agreed. Whatever works. I take many supplements for things such as low stomach acid and adrenal insufficiency. My doctors says these things don't exist, but since I'm improving over time, he has had to acknowledge my success.
  • I just bought some magnesium gel to try. I think this might also be helpful for my partner, who finished with his surgery and chemo for colon cancer about 5 months ago. I think he'd benefit from electrolyte supplementation, based on his blood tests, especially magnesium, but because he has an ileostomy he can't take oral…
  • Yep. Clueless, the lot of them. Until very recently the only person who had a clue for helping me with my insomnia was my licensed Naturopath.
  • For me, fibre = fiend. All my life, the "healthy" high fibre/whole grain diet I followed produced gas, bloating and severe discomfort, with IBS symptoms like chronic constipation followed by bouts of terrible, uncontrollable diarrhea. My ND suggested I give up grains for a few weeks a couple of months ago and I somehow…
  • Foot cramps can be caused by medications. Do you take any medications on a regular basis? Even over the counter stuff? Prior to this diet, I suffered foot cramps for 20 years while taking Synthroid for my thyroid. My doctor at the time gave me Quinine Sulphate, which sort of helped but is apparently quite dangerous stuff.…
  • I haven't looked at the numbers for this because I made it for Mr. Skinny. Still, even if it is a little bit carby, there is the odd occasion where I'd really like a dessert and this would definitely fit the bill - it hits all the notes; fat, coconut and chocolate flavours, plus it's super-creamy.
