  • I get that some combinations work against each other, BUT if we were to get our nutrients from food, the combinations would be higgeldy-piggeldy anyway. In other words, you'd be eating competing nutrients together some or even much of the time. When I mentioned to my ND how difficult it was to supplement calcium, given…
  • A full blood panel might be in order. My favourite dog of all time, not ours but a friend's, went from being a great big sweetie to snapping at people. Turned out he was diabetic and must have felt awful for a long time. Another of our favourite dog friends became lethargic and depressed -- she was diagnosed with thyroid…
  • Insist on a Free T3 and Free T4 test in addition to the TSH. Also, don't accept that a TSH of anything more than about 1.5 is "normal." It isn't.
  • I was an antacid junkie -- even needing prescriptions on a few occasions -- until I started using ACV for heartburn. Not only does it stop the pain cold, it also seems to prevent heartburn, since I now have only one or two episodes a year, instead of several a month. I just use one or two tablespoons straight when I have…
  • But alas, alcohol has carbs, and calories.
  • I agree with the comments about Stop the Thyroid Madness - -I find that site a bit hysterical -- but you can get very good information about thyroid disease at VeryWell. com -- Mary Shomon's site. It's a wealth of research-backed information and doesn't have STTM's stated bias towards desiccated thyroid over synthetic…
  • NDT (Armour or other desiccated thyroid hormome brands) can take a while to get used to. This is especially true if your adrenal glands are not functioning properly. Go slowly, is my advice from experience. Don't accept big dose increases. Go for very small increments. This will help your body become accustomed to the new…
  • It might be an idea to checkout some of the other groups here at MFP -- a Paleo group, or the Low Carb group. Lots of people in those categories are gluten free and would be happy to talk about what to eat and how going gluten free helped them with various conditions.
  • This was my experience exactly. Read some posts, came here instead.
  • Ditto here. If we're going out, I'll look for something lowish carb rather than super low carb. It's a treat, right? Mostly I'll get protein and vegetables, though.
  • Sorry I didn't see this earlier. I have disatrously low cortisol levels, combined with Hashi's. Trying to increase Free T3 but until I get my cortisol levels back up, I think it's no dice. Since adrenal fatigue is not recognized by allopathic medicine, I'm going the naturopath route. She's giving me Ashwaghanda, Holy…
  • It does get better. It might not feel like it sometimes, and it isn't a linear progeression, but bit by bit it gets easier.
  • Hm. I wonder if I should switch, then? Maybe I should talk to my ND about this. I'm awfully sick of having to take a gazillion pills at night before bed - I end up having to pee about two hours later.
  • This is me right now. Unfortunately, here in Canada doctors don't even talk about Isocortex, so we have to struggle with things like Ashwaghanda.
  • Also, you need to look at these numbers in the context of the lab's ranges -- can you post these (Oops -- my bad - @neohdiver already posted this) In my case, a TSH of 1.57 would be too much. Apparently, most people feel well when their Free T4 is in the upper half of the normal range, and Free T3 in the upper 25%. To…
  • The only negative thing that happened to me when I first started with the NDT was heart pounding at night when I was trying to go to sleep. It was obnoxious for a couple of months, then it didn't bother me any longer. What was significant for me was that after about 4 months I realized I hadn't had a foot cramp for ages,…
  • 50 mg progesterone is a pretty low dose. Also, oral progesterone helps with sleep. It really does.
  • You should at least try the extended release. My body seems to over-react to everything and I'm always the one who experiences the rare side effects. I know other people have had successs with it. I might try just taking a tiny dose of Cytomel again at some point, maybe half a 5 mcg tab daily. I took it once before and had…
  • Ditto here. Plus, I'm vain, so sunscreen everywhere.
  • We totally stunned my visiting mother by proving to her over and over again that the reason she's always ravenously hungry before lunch is her every-day breakfast of oatmeal, brown sugar and low fat milk. For decades she's insisted that this is the best stick-to-the-ribs breakfast there is. Two weeks of bacon and eggs at…
  • My BO doesn't seem bad at all, but man, that cheese-breath is vile. I mean, literally after eating cheese. Yuk.
  • About 18 months ago my progesterone was staggeringly low. With supplementation of 300 mg compounded oral caps nightly my sleep improved almost overnight for the first time in years, but after a year or so it got too high, so now I'm lowering it to 200 mg nightly and adding the estrogens. The cortisol is harder to deal…
  • I think it's mostly hormones, ladies -- which in my case means staggeringly low cortisol, high progesterone, staggeringly low estrogens, and a slightly off-kilter thyroid level. My sleep is often appallingly bad, so much so that I have to stop driving sometimes. A lot of the time night-time awakenings are due to…
  • I love my whipping cream in coffee. I can buy organic WC here, and it doesn't have all the nasty stuff in it - though it does take longer to whip (but so what?). And I use 2 TBS in my coffee (I only have one these days). And of course I use it on berries as a dessert.
  • Having a hypothyroid condition will definitely stymie weight loss if the condition is not adequately treated -- and by that I mean receiving both T3 and T3 thyroid hormones, not just synthetic T4.
  • I have to say my sleep is even worse since I started LC. I often save a few carbs for a bed-time snack to help my Tryptophan work.
  • Do you get the Free T4 and Free T3 y=tested, or does your doctor only order TSH? TSH is a fairly useless number.
  • I do think selective, need-based supplementation makes sense. In spite of always having had a pretty good diet (although a bit carb-heavy) I definitely have to supplement now. My blood tests over the years have repeatedly shown very low B12, D, and iron. I'm also horribly deficient in several hormones. I'm not young, and…
  • On another Island near Vancouver, B.C. Started LC about 4 months ago. I eat moderate amounts of fat, depending on hunger levels, but I like to keep my carbs at around 30 each day. So far, so good.
  • I very quickly joined this group after having a gander at the main forums. I don't have a lot of weight to lose, and so it's hard to stay on point sometimes, but it's nice enough in here that I check in every day -- and so every day I am reminded of my goals. I think that, more than counting and measuring, has kept me on…
