Don't be shy. I know it's not just me. I've looked it up.

My fiance has been telling me my armpits stink. I've been in ketosis for around 6 weeks. I already knew my breath was gross, but now my armpits and "lower region" are "spicy" smelling. I already use Mitchum 48 hour deodorant and have very good hygiene. I start stinking quickly after showering and applying deoderant. I even sprayed cologne on my pits after my shower this morning. Please tell me this will go away. Pretty, pretty please.

Forget spicy, my armpits smell more like skunks. I just took a nice whiff. God help me.2

Nope, not just you... I'm embracing my animal nature.3

No, it isn't just you. Acetone has a habit of making people smell like they've rolled in a dumpster full of rotting baby carcass. For some reason though, it doesn't end up happening to everyone, and it's hard to gauge anyway due to the whole "polite society" thing. No one seems to want to admit that I smell like death, but I can smell myself after hard workouts, and my brutally honest cousin has cofirmed that I am right, and the general public are damned dirty liars.8

Yeah. It's a definite thing. My body and its aroma has definitely changed since I restarted three weeks ago. Bummer.1

I love all three of you. Thank you so much for having the guts to admit it! So are you saying it doesn't go away? I was really, really hoping it was going to get better. I'm going to have to research the strongest deodorant.1

For me, at least, it hasn't been a big problem. I have noticed, however, that the smell is stronger if I am dehydrated particularly the urine smell. I typically drink a lot of water so I suspect it gets diluted!3

This is my biggest issue with this WOE. I can't STAND the smell of keto pee! It stinks and honestly makes me feel gross. I also noticed my armpits smelling BAD and I was someone who armpits rarely stank. I changed deodorant to that's clinical strength Certain Dry It works great!2 -

I'm that person who refuses to put aluminum on my armpits, so it's more challenging. I use a good simple lye soap and homemade deodorant. So I need to reapply a few times a day.
Now if I could just let go of the *kitten*.... Sigh.2 -

Thanks for the deodorant suggestion! We aren't gross. We just feel that way.0 -

I don't mind the aluminum. I don't shave. I think it's only dangerous if you shave, no? I have to look up the secret words. I keep seeing *kitten* and I don't know what it means. I must know!2 -
My wife is not known for her kind and gentle approach to things such as body odor. She'll just flat out tell me if I stink. The vast majority of the time, she says I am fine. I think I smell it more than she does, sometimes. And, there are times when I am really, really working out hard and very sweaty. There have been times where my clothes have looked like I jumped in the pool. These are usually not the times that she'll say I have a strong odor.
I think it gets better with time, and I think it also has to do with weight loss. If I'm losing, I am more likely to stink. If I am weight stable, even if sweating a lot and eating tons of protein, then I don't seem to have much odor. There's no biological reason for this observation, but it seems to conform to my experience.4 -

Thank you! I have hope that once I lose the weight, I'll go back to smelling good like I used to.1 -
I actually started having so little odor that I stopped using typical deodorant and only use one made with coconut oil, sodium bicarbonate and beeswax. No actual deodorant or anti perspirant at all. Most days I don't even need it. Just when it's hot.

My BO doesn't seem bad at all, but man, that cheese-breath is vile. I mean, literally after eating cheese. Yuk.2

I have asparagus pee and metal mouth, but all other body odor is gone. I was never stinky, but I think anything I had before was feeding off of sugar.0

Hmm... I don't notice an armpit smell, but I might not notice anyway. I do notice smelly urine at times - is this why? That makes sense.2
-
I only have smellier urine. My breath improved, and my farts are much less stinky. BMs too.
As for armpits, that's about the same for me. I noticed no difference, and neither did my husband.
I've heard higher protein can also cause some BO issues. Could that be it? Or part of it?2 -
I never had a body odour issue. But keto breath got me.. My husband could smell it from across the room. Hence I ended up upping my carbs  I did low carb/keto for 4 solid months, and it never went away or got better..3

This is a mystery to me. You'd think everyone would reek similarly out of every available orifice, but, alas, that's not how it works, it seems.
If anyone's been listening to the Keto Summit, Dr. Tom O'Bryan warned people in keto-based weight-loss mode to be mindful to drink LOTS of water (and sodium) to offset water loss. He recommends a minimum 1/2 oz. per lb. of body weight, up to 1 oz. per lb. if working out, sleeping in a boiler room, etc.
It's essential as you burn off stored fat, he explained, to provide easy pathways out of your body for all the nasty chemicals (cadmium, DDT, etc.) that will be released from those fat cells, which were the vessel your body used to store the toxins when they first came into your system so as to keep them away from your brain. If you're dehydrated, the liquid waste disposal system doesn't work as well.
He also mentioned wheat as a low-level allergen for almost everyone. I wonder if the absence of grain in a ketogenic diet, coupled with mild dehydration, could be responsible for some of your, er, bouquet profile.6 -

Try reducing dairy? Many Asian people don't eat dairy, and some claim that they also mysteriously smell less funky BO. Possible correlation ?
I only get Dinosaur pee, no BO or bad breath that I know of. I usually don't use any deodorant either.
I think for many people these bodily changes are transitional. For a minority they persist. Experiment with different foods?1 -
The only thing i can think of that was causing the keto breath is protein. I struggled keeping it under 100g, so LC mixed with HP may be a cause. But i don't get the breath when i up my carbs and still get highish protein..1

My breath was rancid for the first 5 months, my husband couldn't stand being in the car with me. My sweat had an even more unpleasant odour than normal too. Fortunately it all went away by month six, with no further changes to my diet. My macros have basically been the same since I started, so I don't think any particular food caused it or that it was a protein issue for me as I eat just as much now as I did then. It seems like with time my body just adjusted and adapted. Hang in there!2

My husband is Japanese, and never needs to use deodorant. Even when he is sweating a lot. But our son, who's half Caucasian and half Asian, has sadly inherited my b.o. genes... and needs deodorant. I have to buy it in Canada and bring it back for the both of us as the stuff sold in Japan doesn't work. Dunno about the dairy part.2 -

I had to stop using deodorants with antiperspirants. My keto-stank mixed with the antiperspirants to create a bizarre chemical reaction that turned the armpits of my shirts a funky bright yellow color. Not over time because of buildup on the shirt. Like by the next wash...
So I switched to the Arm&Hammer Deodorant. I had to reapply but it worked pretty well.
Over time I had to apply less. After 2 months, I'd say, if I had to guess a time frame. Of course, once you lose weight, you often feel like moving more, which makes you sweat more. So I still sweat a lot, I just no longer have to worry about knocking myself out when I lift an arm.

Dolce & Gabbana perfume, Right Guard deodorant, Orange and clove scented soap in the shower, pantene shampoo, plenty of mouth wash LOL. Just part of the morning routine.1

That is not fair. I'm happy for you, though.2
