I love walking and hiking. I second what other people said. Make sure you have good shoes, especially the tread (sneakers are fine). I stopped going out in snow or ice (I fell and suffered a concussion), but other people hike in bad weather and wear ice grips on their shoes. Remember that wet rocks can be slippery. If you…

My real reason for losing weight is to stay alive. In July my doctor told me my sky-high cholesterol put me at high risk of a heart attack or stroke. I've lost weight and cut my cholesterol in half. Beautiful is nice. But alive/not dead tops that for me.

I'm aiming for 1200 calories a day. These foods keep me from feeling hungry: Oatmeal (unsweetened) with sliced apple Lentils Steamed greens (collards and kale) Fresh vegetables (yellow squash, tomatoes, sweet potato, whatever I have around) Half an avocado My breakfast has fewer calories than lunch and dinner, which are…

I wouldn't look at these as excuses. This is your reality. You've been through a lot, grief, depression, stress, which has knocked the wind out of your spirit. My two cents: don't wait for motivation. Just start doing some exercise. Something is better than nothing. Commit to something and do it every day for a while. Then…

I bought foam earplugs and often read while I walk on the treadmill. I have to walk slow (about 2.5 mph) to be able to read, but burn 100+ calories in a hour. Better than sitting in a chair.

I started at size 12/14 jeans. I lost 30 pounds before I could fit into size 10 jeans, which are getting baggy now. The thing is our body shapes are all different. Also, clothing manufacturers don't make uniform sizes, at least here in the United States.

Matt, I'm sorry you and your family have had to go through some rough waters this year (but congrats on the birth of your child! That's wonderful.). It sounds like things are starting to level out. I agree with jennifer_417 -- put your thoughts on today. Find an exercise and food you can enjoy looking forward to and that…

I googled the subject and pulled up hundreds/thousands of references. This was one of the first ones. There are plenty more if you don't like this one.

I have to weigh in with the skeptics here, but I wish you well. I enjoy green tea especially the tea in Chinese and Japanese restaurants. I stopped drinking it a few years ago because some of the tea grown near the 2011 Fukushima power plant disaster tested positive for radiation and I don't know where my tea comes from.…

Wow, you look great -- and years younger! Congrats on the weight loss!

I'm sorry this happened to you. If you paid this person, who sounds like a real quack, I would ask for my money back and would report them to the state attorney general's office, who usually handles consumer protection.

I'm a walker too and love your story! Good going!

Good for you! Just remember, something is always better than nothing. I heard that from a physical education professor this past year and think it's a great quote.

I feel that way right now. I've been walking outside in a beautiful area, but it's pouring rain today. I bought a gym membership for days like this so I'll force myself to get off the couch. I don't know about anybody else, but in the past the screw it attitude has been my biggest problem and why I regained weight I'd…

I agree. Fresh taste so much better. I go the easy route, just slice vegetables and simmer in broth or water or stir fry in a little olive oil. It doesn't take long. I also throw on a little spice. To the OP, get your family to help you with meals - tell them you need some hands to cut vegetables. FYI, people, baby carrots…

These are all great suggestions. I'm a student, too, so here's mine: (1) Go to a library or someplace other than the place where you procrastinate and do your readings and homework. I often wear foam earplugs and walk on a treadmill while I read a chapter (granted, I can't walk very fast, but I burn 100+ calories while I…

Fantastic achievement! You look great!

Congratulations!!

Gorgeous! That would motivate me!

I can't eat sweets in moderation. Many people learn how to do this. I can't and I know I can't, so I don't have them in my house. That's my form of control. I eat an apple if I want something sweet. Other than apples, I don't have loads of fruit in my house because I will eat it all immediately as if it were donuts or ice…

Good for you! That's an accomplishment. I hope you enjoy many more sessions.

Mine is open to friends. I'm a vegetarian/almost vegan and eat mostly healthy food because I'm trying to lower my cholesterol (and succeeding), but I also eat out in restaurants. I've lost 32 pounds in 4 months, have 5-10 pounds left to lose, and am over 50 years old. I don't eat all my exercise calories back, only if I'm…

Checking back to see how your day went. Let us know. We're all rooting for you. I'm sure once you start exercising there you will really enjoy it.

Sugarless gum. Orbit brand tastes like gum with sugar. Unsweetened tea (I'm a black coffee drinker, so something similar but different seems like a treat). An apple -- it has sugar but also nutrition and bulk. Something with fat like avocado slices or almonds in a salad helps me with cravings.

2. Along this same vein...does time of day matter? No, the time of day you eat doesn't matter for weight loss. Plenty of people work on a night shift and lose weight just fine. I try to eat healthy all day and I don't starve myself at all, if I get hungry before a meal time I have a healthy snack to tide me over...but even…

Oatmeal keeps me full for hours. I eat the unsweetened instant with sliced apple for sweetener. You can add all kinds of things to oatmeal. Vegetables, anything from sliced squash to steamed leafy greens, are low calorie and have bulk. I like to simmer a batch in vegetable broth or stir fry in a little olive oil.

"Clean eating" is a hot button term on this site. You will get a lot of reactions, basically to say this: Many overweight people think you have to cut out processed food you enjoy in order to lose weight, which isn't true, and then they binge when they reach their goal weight. You lose weight by calories, not the type of…

Can't edit my post, but I want to say I hope you will come back (didn't mean to order you!). Best of luck.
