  • @TeacupsAndToning I was able to get most of my original goals checked off within about 3 months, some of those were: - 10 Strict Pull-ups - Run 2 Miles without walking - Drop 25 lbs - PROPERLY do a Snatch At 5 months: - 15 Strict Weighted Pull-ups (+20 lb vest) - Deadlift 350 lbs - Drop 30 lbs - Body weight Clean (160) -…
  • I have no problem with that argument - specialized training is going to lead to better results for those specific exercises. If I was to train using a program like Stronglifts for 5 months, I’m sure my Squat, DL, and Strict Press would surpass my Squat, etc from 5 months of Crossfit. People that focus on traditional…
  • In my opinion... You should add high intensity work in ADDITION to the steady state cardio, not sub one for the other. The best things? Probably stuff you are familiar with... instead of walking for an hour, do 10 minutes of sprints with very, very short rest periods in between. You have an elliptical? Do sprints on the…
  • I like smoothies for breakfast - they’re fast, convenient, and it’s a light meal that won’t weigh me down for my mid-morning workout. Another great bonus is they let me start my day off by getting a bunch of stuff into my diet that I normally wouldn’t, in one packed drink. Especially things that I might not “like” to eat…
  • Before I did CrossFit, the MMA person would beat me up easily. Now that I’m a CrossFitter, I’m confident that I would still get beaten up easily, but at least I have a chance to get away from him or her by running away, getting myself on top of something to get away, or putting enough things in between us that it’s not…
  • OP: if you live in an area that features ClassPass, I would suggest checking that out. ClassPass lets you buy classes at boutique fitness clubs - Barre, yoga, Crossfit, MMA studios, boxing, Spin studios, etc., without having to pay for expensive membership fees to belong to any specific one. A quick search in my Boston…
  • Second vote for the MyPtotein series of protein powders - you cannot beat the price and they have the highest ranking possible on LabDoor, which tests products for purity. The Cinnamon Roll Isolate has 20g Protein, 90 Cals, 1g Fat, 0 Carbs, 0 sugar. Tastes awesome with just water. If you are looking for protein with…
  • You could also combine exercises - - Burpee Pull-ups / Burpee Muscle Ups Also, - Manmakers - Clusters (Squat Clean into a Thruster) Or get a weighted vest, adding 20+ pounds to a gymnastic based movement will make it much more challenging
  • - Olympic Lifts - Snatch, Clean + Jerk - Ring Muscle Ups, Ring Handstand Push Ups - Ascending Box Jumps - Stack Plates on top of a Plyo Box - Peg Board Ascents - Legless Rope Climbs - Heavy Stone to Shoulders (150+) - Dumbbell Squat Snatches - Heavy Thrusters - Bear Complex Some of these require specialized equipment, and…
  • I think that goal is pretty reasonable. Looking at your numbers, your DL is your best lift at about 57% for men at 245 lbs, followed by your squat at 40%. Your Bench is the weakest lift at 11%, but I’m sure you could up that by 40+ lbs in a year, considering you’ve only been training for 5 months. That leaves < 60 pounds…
  • Could try an Axel bar as well.
  • I’m hoping we only get one or two trick-or-treaters...cause I’ll only have 1 or two left...stupid Mars candy company and your delicious slightly varied combinations of nougat, caramel, and chocolate.
  • What do you weigh? Are you eating at maint, deficit, surplus?
  • When I went away for my birthday, or the two theee day weekends this summer, I just put 3500 calories each day and left it alone. I try to not overindulge, but it’s vacation. I only get so many days away, I want to enjoy myself. Important thing was eating right once I got back.
  • We have Halloween candy in the house now sooooo... keep you posted...
  • Do you have access to a woman’s Olympic lifting bar? They are thinner than men’s bars by 5mm, if I remember correctly, but it’s pretty noticeable in your hands, not by looking at though. The bar is only 35 pounds, and it obviously spins, but could be an option still. Rogue sells them with factory blemishes for 100 bucks…
  • I’ve got an Aunt who believes in this stuff - and I’m constantly rolling my eyes when she launches into one of her diatribes on the evils of the microwave or the horrors of soy. But I will say this, she’s 70 and she looks like she’s 40. But it’s not because she isn’t getting radiation poisoning from the microwave or a…
  • BFast: Coffee with 1 TBPS Light Cream, 1 Scoop Isopure Zero Carb Vanilla protein with 16 oz water. Lunch: Sandwich w/ 1.25 oz of Boars Head Hard Salami, 0.5 oz LoL white American, fancy mustard. Afternoon: Steamed Basmati Rice, 1 Scoop MyProtein Casein Cookies n’ Cream with 16 oz water. Dinner: HelloFresh “Creamy Mushroom…
  • I’ve got conflicting feelings about this. On the one hand, I ate takeout for dinner 6 nights a week and had a couple slices of pizza every other day growing up (I grew up in Manhattan, working parents, etc.), but I never ate breakfast, walked a ton, only used public transportation, and played 3 sports... I graduated at 5’7…
  • Negative pull-ups, assisted pull-ups with a machine if your gym has it, or assisted with resistance bands if it does not. You could try chin-ups, but they really focus on your biceps as the main mover, not the same muscle group as pull-ups. Also, generally speaking, the less you weigh, the easier it is to do a pull-up.
  • Yeah, I use a hook grip for Snatches and for pulls on Cleans but I’m not moving anywhere near the same amount of weight, and my thumb is only under pressure until the bar gets to my thighs (or hips for the Snatch). Still, my thumb hurts like hell after a few sets, which is why I’m wondering.
  • Im still working my way up but have a PR of 330 and haven’t used straps yet (weigh 162). Grip hasn’t been an issue yet, but I do a ton of pull-ups and heavy KB swings in my workouts. I also use a ton of chalk, maybe get liquid chalk if they don’t allow regular chalk in your gym. I’m curious, not criticizing at all, about…
  • Yeah, I’ve heard that too. I always though give em a meaty piece of halibut or swordfish, something to bridge that gap btwn a sirloin and a fish
  • I thought I would agree with your Dad, but after a 5 minute google search, it appears Tilapia is pretty much equal to a lot of other white fish - flounder, fluke, cod, plaice, haddock. It does not have the Omega fatty acids of Salmon, Mackeral, and to a lesser extent halibut and other game fish. But few foods do... Like…
  • Have you thought about maybe checking out a CrossFit class? It’s definitely not for everyone, but it certainly has a lot of the movements you mentioned in your posts (no kickboxing at most though) and you will definitely get your heart rate up. It also has the weight component you are looking for. Like I said, it’s not for…
  • I second Turkish Get ups. Awesome exercise.
  • I get my creatine and protein powders from Myprotein.com. Last I checked, they have the overall highest ranking from LabDoor, which tests for nutritional accuracy, banned substances, and toxic substances. Really can’t beat the prices, 1 kilo of flavored protein (100 cals, 23 pro, 1 fat, 2 carb) for less than 20 bucks. The…
