  • Ask your PT about nerve flossing. I have just learned about this from my PT. She introduced it to me for my sciatic nerve, and it was such a success that on my own, I started applying it to some nerve damage I have in my arm and hand. She helped me tweak what I was doing on my own, and I have cut back by 1/3 the medication…

  • How do they do it? They are cyborgs. I don't get it either. Anyone who can blithely say, "log it!" or "it's all mental!" Doesn't understand the complexities of what you and I suffer from. And what so many other people suffer from. I don't understand how other people do it either. The thought of setting up a program that…
  • Often I don't stay on track. I do, however, make sure to take classes with my trainer (running) 2x/wk so I am obligated to show up and get my money's worth. If nothing else, THAT goes right, and sometimes the endorphins get me through the better part of the day without food obsessing me. Of course, then there is the…
  • So glad you got fitted!
  • Forgive yourself. You know that this will not go on forever. I saw my husband through 8 years of prostate cancer which he managed while I tended to our home and young son. Then two years of long trips for chemo, tending home and son, and all the adjunct stuff that goes with trying to maintain a normal life for the boy.…
  • If you are pessimistic, own it! It is a valid feeling. A good counselor will understand that part of pessimism is establishing trust. The way that you put it, makes me think that you could laugh about your pessimism. That is, see it as a reality, and also see it as something that can be overcome. Possibly. Give your…

  • Achilles tendonosis, no cartilage in the large joint of one big toe, knees that can hurt, adductor issues, hip stiffness and soreness. 4 years ago I couldn't walk across the living room without excruciating pain. And I have a long history of back issues front one end to the other. Today I run. I hurt less while running. I…
  • Relax. Focus on that little human being your body just miraculously created and sustained. There aren't a lot of miracles left in the world. You just were part of one.
  • "Second Wind: One Woman's Midlife Quest To Run Seven Marathons On Seven Continents." Cami Ostman is not an elite athlete, but just an ordinary woman. If you are looking for perfection, this is not your book. But if you are looking for an inspirational story, this may be your book. Something goes wrong with every single one…
  • I come from a family of women who blow up like inflatable rafts when pregnant. My sisters had 6 children between them, all before 31. They gained vast amounts of weight. I waited until 42 to have my son, and overall I lost weight. I was 20-25 lbs overweight to start. I gained 10 lbs. Baby weighed 8 lbs, and who knows how…
  • I still suffer from the high school trauma (40 years ago) of being on a track team with the state champion in middle distances--a girl who may have been 5' tall. I was never going to to be in the same league as her, but jeez! So, no. You have no excuse on the height front. My trainer of the last 5 years has demonstrated…
  • Coffee with nonfat milk and either a half banana or a corn tortillas with a heaping tablespoon of homemade refried. Carbs before workout to feed muscle then protein after to repair. Real food is the best!
  • Been using MapMyRun for years.

  • My chronically morbidly obese sister had this surgery about 4-5 years ago. She was very motivated and did all the stuff they required her to do in order to have the surgery. Today, she is as obese as ever. She is simply not--never has been, never will be--fond of exercise. So many foods bother her now that she has the…
  • Did your doctor diagnose this, or did you self diagnose using Google? If the doctor didn't diagnose this, get thee to a physician! Then get thee to a PT or orthopedist. Do not mess about with knee issues on your own. Knees are very tricky devices subject to a lot of different stresses from simply being a poorly designed…
  • Do Not use anyone's brand advice!!! Brands are all sized and built differently. What works for one person may quite literally cripple another. And within a brand, styles differ in suitability. I speak to you as someone who should not today be running! I ran as a kid, then spent most of my working life doing blue-collar…
  • I loved it when I first found it, but, while I'm ok with stevia as a sweetener, I am not ok with the erythritol they also add. So sad! I am not much of a soda drinker, but I was hopeful about this.

  • Glide! Also, depending on where you are chafing, it might just be the fit of your clothing. While I can't answer for your man parts if that's what's chafing (I'll leave that one to the guys) clothing seams are often chafing points. Also, be sure that you are wearing tech gear rather than cotton. That makes a huge…

  • "I just wanted to try it pre-made before I bought a sack of gluten as I'd be the only one eating it, and I'm not vegetarian so it wouldn't be a staple in my household." You can use regular flour--you just won't end up with as much--or you can get a smaller amount of gluten flour in the bulk section of the grocery store.

  • Great! Just be sure you are eating enough to keep up your supply. That's you focus right now. I BFed 31 months and never did lose weight. But my PG weight was really good (not sure how THAT happened!). Eventually, it all worked out. Here are some words by a woman who was an astonishing mentor on a BF board I belonged to:…
  • Not cheating!!
  • I can't imagine it coming in a jar. Vacuum packed, yes, but not in a jar. On the other hand I've never eaten commercially made. It should be chewy (and never slimey), and have little taste except for the flavors a you add--broths, oils, sauces, seasonings. It's a spectacular basis for any thing you might miss about meat.…

  • Started making that back in the 70's using The Farm Cookbook, back in the day before the fancy name. Used to be called "glutens." Now that I am gluten intolerant, I miss it so! Baked BBQ glutens....uh-huh.

  • A couple of suggestions: Look for soccer shorts. They are loose fitting, but longer. And they go all the way up to your waist! Lands end has some nice longer knit shorts. Walmart has a nice knit Bermuda and Capri (if you shop there!) Lucy athletic wear has a good selection of shorts that are not clingy. Also, consider…
  • Look at the walking entries. I think that "brisk pace ( walking a dog)" is the 3.5 mph calorie burn. Don't be put off by it being categorized as "walking," because pace is pace.
  • From the Nation Institues for Health, here's just one write up that includes references to several very well run studies – – including the decades-long nurses study. It is a desperately dry piece of writing, but if you are truly interested in whether artificial sweeteners are "good for you "or not, you might want to plow…
  • Suggestion: cook in cast iron. Especially with acidic foods like tomato sauce, and longer cooking foods like soups, the iron is painlessly added to your diet. May not solve the problem, but will sure help. My iron levels are always spectacular after being aenemic as a kid.

  • Loathe the dread mill. Go out and run around the block!
  • You're not doing any running and that looks like a pretty important part of the race! Basketball is cardio, but it does not train your body to run as you'll need to. They have a training program for free on the Spartan site. That's probably your best place for the best race-specific advice.
