  • Could be correct, but it depends upon how you are measuring it. I usually go for a 5k run and then hit the elliptical for 20 minutes, keeping my heart rate above 80% of max bpm. This gives me a burn of about 320 calories, give or take. On that basis, it could be true (assuming my chest strap and Garmin are correct).
  • Perhaps it's just me, but my sense of balance took some getting used to. I was used to a particular force of movement to turn around, etc. etc. and I now find - even after a couple of years of maintenance - that I am still over estimating how much force I need. I'll move too much or too fast, and it is a bit strange. Body…
  • I do three days on and one day off. Sometimes I really want to work out on the day off, but I don't. Sometimes I really don't want to work out on the days on, but I do. I feel that the day off gives me a break that really helps with the rest. I can go hard for three days knowing full well that I have a rest day coming. Try…
  • 20 mins elliptical, 20 mins treadmill 6 days a week with the occasional 5k run. Trying to do weights but I absolutely hate it! I have never enjoyed them, and I doubt that I ever will...
  • Personally, I would go wireless instead of wired. After a couple of mishaps, I felt it was the way to go. I used a pair of Bose soundsport for a year, but found that there was no blocking of outside noise, so I had to put the volume level really high to hear anything. OK, but certainly not great and I wouldn't recommend…
  • A year ago, were you wondering if you would ever stop being obese? There are, as you know, no quick fixes. Even bariatric surgery is a life long commitment. You will get there. For now, just savour the fact that you have made it this far. It took a tremendous amount of discipline, motivation and self-discipline.
  • 8. Start training as soon as possible. With weight loss comes the possibility of loose skin. Fitness training helps alleviate this, burns calories and gives you a more toned look. Start it now, rather than waiting.
  • The principle behind weight loss is to burn off more than you take in - essentially run on a calorie deficit (sometimes this is given as the acronym CICO - calories in calories out (or something like that)). The amount you lose and the pace you lose it at is partially down to how much of a calorie deficit you have, how…
  • Running: Asics Gel Kayano (25 at the moment but I have had previous incarnations) Training: A couple of old pairs of Adidas ultraboost which are not suitable for running in any more. I have heard lots of great things about New Balance, so I may try them in about 300 or so miles time.
  • These were my exact thoughts two years ago! I never finished above second from last during any run at school and I hated running. When I first started, I would take an hour to walk 5km. The key, I found, was persistence. Just not giving up. I also went for distance, rather than time. I would do 5 km no matter how long it…
  • A bit about myself: 6'7'' in height, weight is 211 lbs and I run 5k about 4 times a week. I started off with Asics Gel Kayano's after being measured by a sports shop. I stuck with them through three iterations and following advice from another sports shop, moved to Adidas Ultraboost. Stuck with them through 2 iterations…
  • That you have to do it for yourself and not for anybody else. It really doesn't matter what anybody else thinks. It took me a year or so to lose nearly 40 kg, but 15 years to get to the stage that I could start on the journey. It wasn't that I didn't think there was a problem - there clearly was but I didn't acknowledge…
  • God's Own Country! I was born there but now live in Switzerland.
  • Two years ago this coming August, I had a routine blood test. The next morning I got a phone call from the Doctor's secretary asking me to come in asap. 30 minutes later the Doctor herself called, telling me not to worry - but do come in asap! Anyway, go in a couple of days later and the news is troubling. BMI of 33, high…
  • Freeletics for about 30 mins followed by 40 mins of cardio (elliptical trainer). I do this on a four day cycle with the last day being a rest day. I have tried weights but, for some reason, I absolutely hate it. Freeletics is fine for me and hopefully it may replace the weights (hmmm). Freeletics was pretty hard the first…

  • Friends recommend a thickish layer of vaseline over the nipples before a run. Personally, I find that some days you get it, some days you don't. When you have the shower after a run is when you discover it. Owwww!!!
  • Fenix 3. I looked into buying the Fenix 5 but couldn't justify the cost as I already owned the 3.
  • I use a Fenix 3 with a chest strap. I have been using it for a couple of years now and it seems accurate enough. Here is a typical reading: 40 minutes on the trainer with my heart rate from 140 - 150 bpm gives a calorie burn of about 600 or so. In comparison, a 5k run with my heart rate at about 130 bpm for 28 minutes…
