This statement, is absolutely true. Exercise (or lack of) effects our mental health too. This, however is not. While we don't know the exact causes of mental illness, most research shows much stronger correlations between genetics and early development (Inutero thru early childhood) then it does to life events, diet or…

Honestly, That's exactly what I keep reading from most reviews. As luck would have it, I did manage to locate my pedometer last last night (Hiding in the garden where I took it off to clean up, LOL). So I'm leaning more towards waiting till I earn enough for the Vivoactive.

No. The issue is accuracy. Calorie counts in foods are estimates and not 100% accurate for each and every serving you eat. Calorie counts for exercise is also an estimate. So is your RMR and BMR and TDEE. So it's pretty rare that the math will ever work out exactly right. BUT... It is a great guideline and it can be…

Yes.. I've worn Men's sneakers for years, thanks to having not just wide feet but long too. General rule of thumb is US weomen's shoes run about 1.5 sizes larger then men's. I wear a size 10 in women's and a size 8.5 in men's. And yes.. the extra width in men's shoes is a blessing!

Thanks for making my point. It does happen here in the US (a NON-social medicine environment). Never said it's black and white, just said it happens here too. I doubt it's black in white in the UK either. I'm sure there are other cases that the parents won the fight in socialized medicine. So it's NOT a product of…

I successfully ran a marathon while managing chronic PF (been dealing with it since a teen). But to do so, I did everything deannalfisher suggested, plus wore a sleeping boot every night. Not only did I do the ABC stretch every morning, but also several more times throughout the day. Was religious with the slow warm and…

CPS or Child Protective Services. I don't need a list. You'd be amazed at how quickly they can take your child and strip you of parental rights with very little evidence. Especially if a doctor is claiming you are failing to treat you sick child properly. If you think it doesn't count, then go stick your little head back…

For those interested, this article does a nice summation of the studies that lead to the theory of fasting effects on cancer cell growth. It has a nice layout and explains the progression of study results and theories that have lead to these claims. It does point out that active studies on humans are under way, but that to…

For me... losing weight is simply about keeping my calories under my maintenance level. But, in order for me to manage my calorie levels successfully, I found it imperative to monitor the amount of fiber I get each day and to ensure a minimum of 30 grams protein per meal. I completely ignore fat grams and carbs, as I find…

This isn't a product of socialized medicine. This happens here in the US too. Insurance companies denying treatment. Hospitals overriding legal documentation on preferred treatment. Long list of court cases deciding what treatments a person gets when family members disagree. It even isn't that uncommon for a government…

In my younger/skinnier days, I was actually able to eat more then I can now. At 135lbs, I used to be able to demolish an entire large pizza by myself and just felt really full (not painfully full). Just last week, I ate 3 slices and felt a bit nauseated. But I don't think the actual size of your stomach plays that big of a…

I also do all sorts (variety the spice of life). Currently a big fan of swimming and yoga. Also do some water aerobics classes (great for bad knees), and Zumba classes, plus weightlifting. When time gets to wonky to make it to the Gym and joints too sore for Zumba, I just go explore fitness videos on Youtube or grab a…

I third this. While I also don't agree on drinking half your weight, I do fin if I actively maintain 80-100 oz a day works wonders for me too. Not only for hydration and feeling better (that seems to kick in around 60 oz), but it also goes a long way in helping me control cravings. As to the "Too much water is…

It's different for everyone, based on overall body composition, personal perception, amount/type of exercise, etc. For me.. I noticed my pants felt looser 15lbs in.

This is SOOOO worth repeating. I've been peri-menopause for the past year. Weightloss is SLOOOW and I often have to constantly adjust what I eat and how much based more on how I feel then my desire to lose weight. Case in point. for the last few weeks, I'm been dealing with some serious fatigue issues. Made it hard to…

Ditto. On average, chicken breast at my local store weigh anywhere from 5-8oz a piece. Even with the smaller size, 5oz, 4 of those would give you roughly 937 cals. Doing that twice a day gives you 1874 cals on just the chicken breast alone. Add in the potatoes and eggs and you are easily over 2500 cals. If you use oils or…

I agree. Worrying about whether or not you'll regain the weight after such a stressful time just causes more stress and that's more likely to cause you to regain some (or all of the weight) then going back to maintenance or your deficit. As to whether or not you'll regain the weight... no one can say for sure (not even a…

Pretty much this. Focus on heeling, which is essentially teach the dog to stay at your side regardless of how fast or slow you are moving. Once they are well trained in heeling, adjusting them to the activity you'd like to do with them is pretty easy and takes very little time to transition. I had dogs running along side a…

Truthfully... give it time. You literally doubled your calorie intake and it's going to take your body time to fully adjust to it (think 6 months to a year). That's not to say you'll keep gaining weight the whole time, but you did a number on your entire body eating just 600 cals for 2 decades. It will go through phases of…

Yep. Lost over 40lbs after my second child was born with that exact same schedule, but add in kids to the mix. I used to get up at 5am, get in a quick 30 min run, then shower, breakfast, get kids ready. Hop in car by 6:30, drop kids off at daycare, drive to work and be in by 8. Lunch spent in the weight room (about 35-40…

Based on distance, breaststroke burns more, but since you can get more distance with freestyle in the same amount of time as breast stroke, the speed closes the calorie gap when based on time. Hence why it burns less. Effeciency requires a lower calorie burn then more laborious efforts. Breast strong involves more joint…

Have you considered that it's not that they don't trust MFP's settings, but rather they may have no real idea what "lightly active" might mean in terms of actual activity. Given that A) Our TDEEs are truly just rough estimates based on simple mathematical equations that were based off of random samplings of populations…

Ummm.. essential what over training is defined as: when training loads exceeds their recovery capacity. Not necessarily. What level of training one can recover from is entirely based on how fit they are at the time. So an individual whose been a couch potato for over 5 years can easily over train by doing nothing more then…

NO.. my joints don't hurt (well, unless I do some crazy amount of an activity like a full day hike on tough terrain and to be fair, the joints hurt then as well when I was in a healthy BMI range too) My V02 max is in a healthy range, my BP is in a healthy range, my cholesterol is in a healthy range, my glucose is in a…

I'll break the mold and say yes.. I gave up running because it was just too much of a pain in the *kitten* to manage the aches and pains (and injuries) I get from it. Shin splints, stress fractures, Plantar faciitis, IT band issues were pretty much facts of life for me while running. While I could do many things to make…

Actually, not true. Though the difference is pretty minimal. 10 mins of swimming freestyle at my pace burns 135cal. 10 mins breast stroke at my pace burns 140 cals.

Funny thing is... my set point is about the exact same place - 175. I never had issues with weight until my first pregnancy. After my oldest was born in 1998, I weighed in at 210. Over 5 months lost about 35lbs pretty easily, but then stalled out for about 3 months at 175 until I discovered I was pregnant again. After my…

I highly doubt any single payer system is going to let corporations/companies off tax free. First off.. it would be fiscally impossible to simply cut out the large amount of money invested in our healthcare system but the corporate contributions and keep the new system afloat. The reality is going to be much closer to…

Actually, it's not weird and may be part of the problem. The plantar faciitis is actually caused by inflammation of the tendons that run across the bottom of your foot (from heel to toe). If your everyday footwear has no arch supports, but your workout shoes have high arch support, you are most likely stressing the tendons…
