"Popular science" is the term for secondary or tertiary sources created for a broad audience. I assure you WHO uses primary source studies to base their recommendations on, not the latest fear-mongering article being passed around on facebook. Of course scientific knowledge evolves over time but that doesn't mean we…

The World Health Organization is not some podunk little fringe group. WHO recommendations are evidence-based so even if the specific research is not named in an article, it does exist.

My understanding from the cinematic masterpiece My 600 Lb Life is that surgery is supposed to be for people who need to drop a lot of weight quickly to avoid major health complications. On the show the surgeon gives his patients low calorie goals that they could not sustain without surgery but then they can drop like a…

Not an exact swap for alfredo but I love to put an ounce of goat cheese in a serving of pasta. The goat cheese leaves a creamy tangy coating on the pasta (or low-carb alternative) and toppings if you mix it all up in a warm pan. I never bother making cream sauces, this is too easy and about 75 cal for one ounce.

Yes that would be fine but personal trainers have a certification that afaik does not require any nutrition knowledge at all. Many trainers have bad ideas about nutrition just like many people generally have bad ideas about nutrition. To prompt a client to look up energy balance they need to understand its importance…

Yep. I worked with a personal trainer for a little while and even though she was a good trainer, her theories on nutrition were godawful. But she knew she wasn't qualified to give nutrition advice so she didn't try, I just picked up on her philosophy through conversation (mentioning that her mom gained weight because she…

Oh, so your point is that some personal trainers suck. Groundbreaking. Also I am sure most chain gyms do not do this because it can very quickly veer into medical advice territory which personal trainers are not qualified to give.

Beans and large amounts of lactose make me very gassy but if I keep eating them for weeks it gets a lot better. I think the type of bacteria in your gut changes based on what you're eating (ie bacteria that likes beans will thrive when you eat lots of beans) and the problem food gets easier to digest.

What does the 'honest assessment' you keep going on about look like in a gym environment? Do you bring a scale and body fat calipers to the gym with you and calculate body fat % for random strangers? Do you follow them home to make sure they don't stop at Dairy Queen? This mythical 'honest assessment' requires detailed…

Start small. Starbucks drinks can be made lower calorie by using almond or nonfat milk, skinny syrup, no whipped cream etc. log even if you're not eating the way you think you should. This will help you figure out where your excess calories are coming from. Also, you need to make this a priority. You can be successful even…

I cut back significantly but I probably still drink a lot by some people's standards. I used to have 2ish drinks every night (my parents were nightly drinkers when I was a kid and I thought that is just what one does after turning 21), cut back to weekends only. I build it into my plan now.
-
I batch cook every weekend, all my full meals are homemade. I keep a little notebook while I'm cooking to log the weights of all the ingredients and put it in the recipe builder when I'm done. Getting all the info into MFP takes maybe ten minutes a week. It doesn't need to be agonizing.

It is absolutely not the norm. I've belonged to several different gyms and never seen this happen and it would be considered very rude behavior if someone did so unsolicited. Most people don't carry around body fat calipers and meal plans just to give random gym-goers advice so I have no idea what OP means when he says he…

I think the marketing is ridiculous but I also don't think they're downfall of American society, jeez. I used to go to a Planet Fitness and most of the people there were Weight Watchers moms only interested in cardio equipment and teenagers because the membership is so cheap. There's no reason why there can't be different…

How much time have you been eating this way? If you increased your fiber intake by a lot very quickly your stomach can be unhappy for a while. Maybe things like eggs and yogurt would be better in the morning than high fiber cereal while you adjust. In any case, you have a lot of special considerations so going to a…

Whatttt the bean thing is ridiculous! Does the serving/weight include the water?

Pasta! My weighed out serving is less than I would eat before I tried to control portions but more than what I would try to guesstimate with a stupid measuring cup after I started counting calories.

I work from home 3 out of 5 days most weeks, and even though my schedule is very flexible and my job isn't very fasted paced on work from home days it's very easy for me to sit all day. I have a fitbit that gives me a nudge to take at least 250 steps every hour. Unless you have a real jerk of a boss that would frown upon…

There are some medical indications for low carb diets. No one is saying otherwise. I'm saying that 'not low carb enough' does not make sense as a critism of this study, that focused on a general population. This study found that in a general population, low carb decreases life span. You are saying that your improvement on…

It's incredibly silly and speculative to say that there is a threshold for low carb that creates magic health effects not observable at 'higher' low carb diets. Of course it's possible but the burden of proof falls on the side of 'yes this does happen.'
-
"This study says reducing carbs to 35% of your calories is bad for your health but my diet is 10% carbs so I reached the magic zone probably." I cannot understand the 'not extreme enough' criticism low carbers always have for studies they don't agree with.

The first thing you did wrong was buying Ezekiel bread. No idea how you can recoup that $5 but Dave's Killer Bread and the Costco brand multigrain are both way better.

https://www.brandnewvegan.com/recipes/best-damn-vegan-chili-ever I made this a few weeks ago and getting ready to make it again. It is so freaking good. SO GOOD. I modified a little bit, I added a tablespoon of oil to sauté the veggies and used boca crumbles for the mock meat. I made it a little spicy but it's easy to…

Cardio also curbs my appetite, I did not think to do this but I will definitely start. Thanks!

My mom is a supertaster and that is the first thing I thought of reading this post. She can taste if a mug had coffee in it even if it's been thoroughly washed. If you think you might be one forgive yourself for not liking certain things, you were just dealt a very weird sensory hand! There are a lot of resources out there…

You can find people who have had weight loss success without calorie counting with the cabbage soup diet, the military diet, and breatharianism. That doesn't mean any of those diets have special weight loss effects beyond a calorie deficit.
