  • Don't worry about it at all. I run a lot and when you get to a certain range of miles this is the reality. Thank god for nail polish.
  • I stopped competing in triathlon a few years back and now I am 15 lbs heavier than I was when I was competing. I know it isn't that much, but it stinks. It is so hard to keep the weight down and I still exercise like mad. I feel your pain. Keep at it!
  • Yesterday in LCC
  • When running in the wilderness I love compliments and attaboys. When running on the strip in Las Vegas no eye contact and have a bit in reserve in order to sprint away from some of the local denizens. For me it is all about location.
  • You know what is super fun. Is to look up what the WR is for different age groups in running. It is amazing how fast some people are into later years.
  • Tell that to Jack Daniels. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Daniels_%28coach%29 :p
  • The percentages are the percentages of heart rate. His philosophy is based on training different systems VO2 max, aerobic, threshold, etc. Depending on your weakness you can work certain systems harder. These percentages are targeted towards endurance athletes. When you look at power profiles of track cyclists vs road…
  • My skin is a bit beat up from so much time spent outdoors. I wish that I had been better about sunblock when I was younger. Still sometimes I don't get complete coverage and end up paying for it. Didn't get my shoulders very good last weekend and ended up with a nasty tan line. Taking care of your skin is real.
  • I actually like the Jack Daniels training zones instead of zone training. Jack Daniels training zones Repetition ( R) 200m,300m,400m repeats w full recovery improve running economy less than 5% training 2 min max Interval (I) 98-100% stresses VO2max 3-5min max int at most 8% of weekly training. Threshold (T) 88-92% should…
  • I used to used to use a rectal suppository a few hours before races to make sure everything was cleaned out. I know a bit graphic, but it worked for me. Also I don't go for the big carbo load the night before. Treat long runs like race days. Watch your diet the day before a long run and when you figure it out repeat it…
  • Keep moving! Sometimes I will try to lightly massage or roll my muscles out.
  • I did a century bike ride on Monday and MFP said I burned around 6000 calories.
  • 3 years. You got that. You can do it. Keep healthy and be consistent.
  • One of my favorite runs from last year. Monte Cristo
  • Always like @NorthCascades posts. I do a ton of trail running and my watch has gotten me out of a number of jams. A handheld is ok and could just drop it into the front pocket of my pack, but the instant feedback on your wrist when you get off trail is great. (it vibrates) The other functionality I love is the ability to…
  • Spare tube in baggy with just a bit of talcum powder. Tire irons, $5 bill, can buy a treat or use it to fix the sidewall of a blown out tire. Flat kit, it has been more than once that I have had to fix multiple flats on a ride. Way to inflate your tire. I use a small frame pump that attaches near my water bottle. CO2…
  • In the winter I run exclusively on a treadmill. It is fantastic. I always get the workout that I want. I usually keep the deck at 1.5% incline. I can do intervals, work on efficiency. There are facilities within a hop jump. It is a lot less impact then the road. I know exactly my work load. Usually come out of winter a lot…
  • It sounds like you are getting into triathlon. It could be worth it to look into one of the higher end Garmins. I have a Fenix 5 that I love, but I used to have a 910 and an Epix. The high end ones can connect to other sensors and do a better job moving from activity to activity. I use mine in conjunction with power…
  • One question where exactly in the knee is the pain. Top, bottom, behind patella, on the outside or inside? Very interesting because knee pain is usually associated with a heel strike pattern. Just curious, but see a physio.
  • Can't agree with the people using belts enough. I hate armbands. I have several running belts but my favorite is a neoprene belt with two pockets and a water bottle holder. I can put my phone in one pocket and my keys in the other pocket that way they don't scratch the screen and in the middle of the summer it is enough…
  • I have the Fenix 5X also. For me it is having trouble keeping accurate heart rates while I run. So I am using my MIO fuze in conjunction with it. Mine might have some issues. I have heard on other forums that this might be the case so I am trying to follow up with Garmin right now and determine whether I should return it…
  • I'm trying to get rid of an old 910XT and I have a chest HR monitor I could throw in for super cheap. PM me if you are interested.
  • @middlehaitch Here is one article that I found. Most of the training was resistance, at higher intensities. This is actually a summary article of a number of other papers on the issues. There was a paper out of the University of Alabama a number of years ago that showed that higher exertion didn't necessarily lead to…
  • Not into weight training or serious cutting, but I ran into this resource a number of years ago, and though some of the advice might be on the slightly unhealthy side. Lyle, I believe knows what he is talking about. http://www.bodyrecomposition.com/
  • Cardiovascular might not improve that much, but I have heard a lot about a modified HIT protocol for seniors and inactive people that has shown impressive results for the amount of time spent. I echo the sentiments of others in this thread that with the condition that you are in right now you probably should consult a…
  • I don't compete any more, but the thing that keeps me running are the things that I see. I love running on mountain trails. It seems like there is always something new around each corner. When I travel I always plan a monster run around the city I am visiting. It just gives me a very personal feeling for that town. You…
  • Kill the weight training. 50K isn't to much really like @Anne_01 advice. If you have time for a marathon training plan, that is best, but if it is fairly soon I would drop the weight lifting and do cycling instead that way you can build your endurance without taking the toll on your joints. I remember doing an event when I…
  • Agree to disagree. Though changing strike might cause problems for some. I have seen it clear up a number of injuries for others. The fastest Marathoners in the world all use different strikes. Hitting the heel moves the impact to the knees while a forefoot strike increases the chance of injury to the calf and increases…
  • I haven't raced in many years, but when I used to. I had so much fun stalking my opponents and learning there best times there weaknesses and strengths. You would just get to know the fast people and they would know you. I met a number of great friends during this time. Fast is competing against your friends. The joy of…
