It is, though. Regular exercise is the single most healthy thing you can do for yourself, and if eating more food motivates you to do it, that’s fine. Eating more and exercising enough to maintain at that calorie level is far healthier than being sedentary and eating less to maintain at that activity level.

There’s a good point made here - accounting for and eating back your exercise calories is good training for those inevitable times when you are injured, change jobs, or are otherwise unable to be active, and need to reduce your calories accordingly. Lots of runners in particular gain weight when injured because they get…

Congratulations! You did it! For me 10k was much easier to get to than 5k. From 0 to 5 is your body figuring out how to be a runner, after that it’s much easier.

Heat index 122! Booyah! Dew point 83! Looks like a nice day for a long run! So, exactly noon was the time slot we had, thus, we ran. But not very fast or very far. We altered our usual course to circle by our car at the midpoint so we could refill water bottles with fresh ice water. Took walk breaks as needed. Was aiming…

Try eating out as a diabetic! It’s even worse. I actually eat out pretty often but only because I time my eating to my runs so that I can consume amounts of carbs which would swamp me on a non-run day. There are a handful of local restaurants which provide low-calorie, reasonable food which fits into my diet, and all of…

That was my assumption. I was honestly expecting more like 50k!

Eating well apparently means something unique to you. To me it means eating the correct number of calories to maintain a normal BMI. Doing that, or not, is indeed a choice. There are no people who can maintain an overweight BMI despite not eating. If there were, NASA would be contacting them to solve to the problem of how…

Her out of pocket was zero. It’s good to be an elderly widow of a military officer in the US. That is the stated total cost, Tricare said they would have covered up to 24k, but the bill was 8. I know, I was shocked too.

Oh, this is a terrible story, I’m so sorry. There’s no excuse for not running a regular a1c, yet my doctor didn’t do it either. Did your neuropathy improve at all with good glucose control? I ask because I used to have neuropathy in my hands and it mostly disappeared after a year or so with good control.

Heavy weight lifting has been found to have a greater impact on waist circumference than other types of exercise, partly because it increases muscle mass overall, which then means you have a lower fat ratio at the same weight. But there is also a recent study which looks at signals sent by the muscles to fat cells, which…

I dunno, my running injury was pretty expensive. I don’t have insurance so had to pay up front. It cost me almost as much to diagnose and treat a ruptured Baker’s cyst as my mom’s recent 6 day hospital stay with diabetes related kidney issues. Her whole hospital stay plus surgery and ER fees was 8k roughly. I had ER fees…

Aren’t you fat shaming those 400 pound women? You just said, essentially, “I’m fat but not as fat as REALLY FAT people! I’m the cute kind of fat!” That’s why the term morbidly obese exists. It isn’t a loaded term, it’s a medical term. It means your obesity is a morbid condition. It literally, factually, increases your risk…

I feel like it’s important to look at the difference between the way fat men and fat women are treated to understand the societal drive to shame fat women. No one is telling fat men they are disgusting and should die rather than expect others to be around them, yet that’s a fairly mild comment easily found online directed…

@ContraryMaryMary congrats on your podium finish! @quilteryoyo impressed that you finished all those miles in this heat, bug stings and all! My husband and I got out later than we planned and ended up running in 94 degree heat, with a heat index which was officially 107 but according to the local weather thingie was 115, I…

I love mixing dish colors! Ours are various shades of green and blue, with a set of random bowls in fancy patterns. The deep green eastfork is my favorite. My husband and I inherited a enormous set of really expensive, really boring floral pastel china from the 1910 era, and lived with it for a decade before deciding we…

Oh they make the worst noise! The first time I heard one after we moved out to the country I thought it was a woman being murdered! I hope Tippy has enough sense to avoid them.

@CMorning99 “a few hours work” means “It’ll take about 45 minutes… when we get to it.” My new car needs a few things done and the place to do it, which I trust implicitly as they have gotten me out of several bad deals in the past, doesn’t make appointments at all! And they say they are backed up. I am gonna have to hitch…

Walking farther will get easier as the weight comes off. When I started I used to make my husband go to the mailbox for me because it was too far. Now I have run 50k! You are doing exactly the right thing, making yourself do a little bit more every time you feel like giving in.

99 degree heat index and thunder late this morning, walked more than we ran. There must have been a billion butterflies on the trail. No one else crazy enough to be out there at noon in hundred degree heat, so we had the trail all to ourselves. So I did something I have never done before, ran shirtless in just a sports…

I can kind of understand the yelling over the mailbox! Coincidentally we saw an incident with the same sort of claw in our neighborhood just this morning. They were whipping it around and nearly smashed the neighbor’s car! I would be pretty annoyed if they were being as careless as our trash guys were, it might be just a…

Yep, it sure can be. I am smaller than you and often have swings of 4 pounds or so due to sodium and exercise in one day, 6 in a couple of days isn’t fat-fetched. With a 10k surplus it’s also possible that as much as 3 lbs is actual gain. 3,500 calories to make a pound of fat. But mostly such big binges don’t all get…

In my case I’m using farmer’s carries to improve farmer’s carries - as an actual farmer, grip strength etc are more valuable to me than a heavy deadlift. But interesting info re: the carryover into deadlift, or lack of.
-
I haven’t tried Decathlon shoes but my running jacket from them is my favorite thing ever. They aren’t a brand which is commonly seen in America but their stuff is great!
-
If your gym has a trap bar, farmer’s carries with a trap bar are a good solution. Wandering around with a trap bar isn’t as awkward as with a barbell.

Finally! It feels like a victory putting my 50k magnet back on a car I own. It was blasted off in the wreck and my husband found it must have been 50 yards down the road! My neighbor came over to say congratulations, but I thought your car was totaled! We had to explain to him that yes we are crazy people and had the exact…

There’s a lot of ground between keto and high carb. I’m a diabetic controlled by diet and exercise, and I eat moderate carbs (about 150 g / day or 45 g / meal) planning them around my exercise. I test blood glucose frequently and have found that I can sometimes eat up to 90g net carbs at one sitting without a blood sugar…

My husband uses a Nathan handheld, but he swapped out the bottle that comes with it for a Nathan fire and ice bottle, which is insulated. Filled with mostly ice and a little water, it stays cool most of a long run in 100 degree heat. Nothing like drinking bath temperature water when you’re already hot! It also has a pouch…

When blanching you just boil them long enough to scare them a little bit, then plunge into ice water to stop the cooking. The vegetables end up bright colored and crisp, but without that raw flavor. https://www.thekitchn.com/how-to-blanch-vegetables-home-108570

My husband used to believe he hated asparagus until he tried it blanched with a little lemon juice, still crisp. His mother used to cook it into mush. Start with the mushy vegetables and just don’t overcook them. If he still hates whatever it is lightly steamed, stir-fried, or roasted, I would move on.

I’ve run twice since my last post - it’s hot and muggy, nothing much to say, still getting out there. Not running today however since there are supposed to be storms. I may try to run on the treadmill at my mom’s. She has another doctor’s appointment tomorrow which will prevent me running then (and besides there are…
