10k in the rain yesterday - we decided that we need more hills so we did the hilly bits of Shelby Farms. It was supposed to rain, then it was supposed to be clear, then it rained anyway! But sort of a nice soft rain mostly, although it was pouring on the drive over. There was what looked like a middle school cross country…

My mom is driving me berserk again. She has become so obsessive. Recently she got it into her head that she needed a booster shot for Covid. She made an appointment to get a booster shot. I talked to the doctor’s nurse who informed me of what I already knew, it’s not time for her booster yet, no one anywhere is giving…

While 35 miles sounds like a lot, that’s only five miles a day for a week, which is well within reason. Many many ordinary runners run 35 miles or more a week, which gets you even more calories than walking. I hear “you can’t outrun your fork” a lot. But becoming an active person, if you were previously a sedentary person,…

@martaindale You doing okay with all the rain?

My husband and I ran the West Cancer Center Fight On 5k yesterday. This 5k is our 4 year runniversary - the first race we ever ran, back when we were still overweight, in the middle of c25k, and couldn’t even run the whole way - and it’s also special to us because when we ran it my husband still had stitches in from his…

@julieannegannon That’s great news! I fell ice skating a couple of years ago and landed on my hip, and it hurt for a long time, despite nothing being really wrong with it except a deep bruise. I know that not having pain is better, but if you gotta have pain it’s nice to know it doesn’t signify anything important!…

The exercises which I personally found helped my core and posture most were compound exercises, especially push-ups. I do like the ab roller which is like a push-up but dynamic and working a lot more on the eccentric.

I have a friend who is a runner and also does carnivore. He is a type 1 so being fully keto adapted means less insulin needed. You should expect to feel a little under the weather during the adjustment period. Stay hydrated and up your electrolytes and it should help.

@TheMrWobbly Sorry about your marathon. On the upside, the Run the World challenge you started for everyone is about to hit New Zealand! Re: horse / hedge apples, Osage oranges - they aren’t common around here but there are dozens of them at Shelby Farms, which used to be the Penal farm grounds, and before that was several…

Re: the black market - it would take a person who was competent in any editing program with access to a decent printer about an hour to make a fake card. In Tennessee they ran out of cards in the early stages so sent a pdf of the form to vax sites with instructions to print their own cards. Not sure how you would tell one…

Right now I’m having the same trouble feeling compassion for my husband’s stepbrother and his wife, who were vocal antivaxxers and are now on their third week of feeling really ill with Covid. On the one hand I hope they stay out of the hospital. On the other hand, they are both jerks, and they deserve this. They tried…

When my husband was a ranger pathfinder they downright experimented on him - didn’t ask permission, just told them the military was experimenting to see whether blood doping would improve physical performance at high altitude. Blood doping is pretty well understood today but was a new idea in 1988. Anyway I was surprised…

If you read, she asked the school for an explanation first and received one which is in opposition to current CDC guidelines. Since the vaccine is only about 50% effective against infection, and infected vaccinated people are just as contagious, I’m not sure I don’t agree with the school. There’s some evidence that…

@quilteryoyo Your driveway cracks me up! My husband and I hiked twice the distance in (for around here) fairly hilly terrain, and you got 3x the elevation change! @kgirlhart I hope your mom continues to feel better! Today was a run day but after a hard downhill run on Tuesday then lifting heavy weds my legs felt a little…

@7lenny7 I love puffballs but when they get super big they do have a weird texture. I like them best when they are about as big as a fist. I assume you know to always cut them open and make sure it’s actually a puffball and not an amanita that hasn’t opened yet. If you see any internal structures like gills, don’t eat! I…

My husband and I did a second practice run for our virtual 5k which we are planning on running on the official course around Patriot Lake. Somehow after running last month in 128 heat index I thought 88 heat index today would be easy! Well, it’s not, at least not in the direct sun. We haven’t been doing any speedwork or…

So, Tennessee is supposedly leading the nation in new Covid cases as a percentage of population. Ugh. I’m posting because I was reading the local paper and noticed a new phenomenon - people who died of Covid because they were unvaccinated but their families are ashamed to admit it. At least I assume that’s what’s…

The linked site thinks I have big elbows and dainty wrists. :D

10k plus walking to 11 miles yesterday - overcast and not too hot, it was nice!

You gotta admit it’s a little hilarious: “I didn’t get much done today, I only climbed ONE mountain!” Sorry your weather sucked. It must be exciting to be so close to finishing!

The FDA recommended sugar allowance, which is what the MFP recommendation is based on, is supposed to be for only ADDED sugars. Fruit doesn’t count. Their recommendation is based on their observation that when the diet includes more than that amount of added sugar, it becomes difficult to get complete nutrition without…

Probably now is not the best time for fasting. Take your medications as prescribed with food and don’t worry about your diet while you heal. You need extra calories for healing anyway. Also, is there some special reason for the bitter gourd juice? Unless your doctor has told you to drink this, stop it. It’s frustrating to…

Today was snake day on the trails! We saw not one but two large black snakes cross the trail right in front of us. Large black snakes near the Wolf River can be anything from harmless water snakes to venomous water moccasins but I think these were just rat snakes. Still unsettling! I actually had to slam on the brakes to…

To lose the MAXIMUM amount of weight? Zero, of course. The larger the deficit the faster you lose. I’m going to suggest you not do that. A crash diet right before a night out guarantees you will feel and look drained. Just follow your program and be patient. A water weight increase from lifting is your body doing what it…

I wasn’t gonna say anything but was wondering how 100 miles would fit into c25k! It’s been a while since I did it but the math wasn’t adding up in my head! Glad you are getting back into it, take it easy and don’t be afraid to repeat runs if they get difficult.

Exactly how and where does your hip hurt, and what movement elicit the pain?

I have a lucky headband I wear when the weather is hot - it’s a Sweaty Band with a fancy, mostly green pattern. I try to lay out everything the night before, including my breakfast, because I am not a morning person and races are usually in the morning, so it’s likely I have had three hours sleep and can barely function,…

My September 5k, which had been delayed, just announced it’s going virtual. My county has a rapidly climbing covid rate and local hospitals are so overwhelmed they have called in the National Guard. Since the race is to benefit a cancer clinic and it includes a big gathering of survivors every year, it makes sense - cancer…

A little while ago you posted that soap tastes like cilantro, rather than the other way around, which made me think you should probably keep your mouth closed while washing your face! OT but it does have a pertinent moral, the flavor of cilantro is something they have isolated the gene for. If you have the gene, cilantro…

One last run in August! We got Ida yesterday but it went mostly south of us - there were tornadoes in Mississippi only a few miles away, but all we got was a little wind and rain. Today was cooler than it has been, topped out in the 80s with a heat index only 90 something. In the shade with a breeze it was almost tolerable…
