  • I agree and totally love this "Battle Plan." Except I personally disagree about the sugar substitutes, and I'd strongly recommend using them sparingly and cautiously until you know how they affect you. For me they cause cravings at best, and the non-digestible sort wreak utter havoc on my digestive system at worst. Maybe…
  • I always laugh a bit when someone says "you don't eat sugar out of the bag with a spoon do you?" because I totally have. I have also driven to the grocery store at 2 am to get candy/sugar/chocolate. I have also, when trying to cut down but feeling desperate, eaten truvia with a spoon. A mistake in the extreme, just makes…
  • That is really fascinating. I also wonder how they got those study participants to agree to being locked in a simulated ship for 3 months.
  • I really don't think the difference between anyone losing weight or not is coming down to a cucumber or a pile of spinach. Even if it's a big pile of spinach. I wouldn't log the green and leafy or very low-cal items, but I'm interested in tracking micronutrients lately so I do anyway. I'll weigh things like onions and…
  • 1.5 lbs in 2 weeks is great! Particularly because it doesn't look like you have a lot to lose to begin with. Keep in mind that that's predominantly fat, not water like the 10 lbs that came off in the first week. You might find that the maintenance predicted for you by online calculators is off - it's normally distributed…
  • My guess is it's an accidental hybrid and it's got potato and sweet potato sets of DNA, like different species of corn will do, and cauliflower (have you seen the new orange/purple cauliflower?) and cabbage. So I'd guess it's safe, but I'd still feed it to someone I didn't like first. ;) I think I'll google this tonight.
  • How's your fat intake? Lots of those micronutrients are fat soluble; if you've been doing very low-fat in order to hit your calorie goal try bumping it up to 30-40% intake. This doesn't take a lot ... coconut oil, avocado, butter, nuts, etc. Usually hair loss follows an aggressive deficit because people don't get adequate…
  • Every morning for the past two weeks I've eaten a bowl of spring mix, parsley, basil, chopped tomato, 3 eggs fried over easy in butter, a big scoop of guacamole, and hot sauce. I highly recommend this salad. Eat enough calories, fats, proteins, varieties in your salads and sure - this could be a good plan if you enjoy it.
  • ^^ Yeah @nichell88 that is seriously impressive. That must have taken some real work and dedication!
  • If I eat too close to when I sleep, I don't digest things well, sleep poorly, get bad gas, and wake up ravenous the next morning. The bad sleep and being overly hungry the next day certainly make it more difficult to lose weight. But if none of these things are true for you, then eat as late as you like.
  • Agree that there's no NEED to think "I should burn off all that extra sugar." OP and anyone else reading, please don't slip into that mindset. It's truly insidious and harmful for a number of reasons. That said, if you've been in a significant deficit for a while now, you were probably partially glycogen-depleted, and now…
  • In January I told myself I wanted to be able to do a pull-up with good form by spring. Now I'm in pretty good shape, but I'm female and carrying a bit of extra weight right now, have never been able to do proper pull-ups, and I have a shoulder issue I've been doing PT on so figured strengthening my back was a good idea.…
  • Love this thread. As another Reasonably Fit Person, I can say that I am actually paying attention to other people at the gym all the time. This is for any of three reasons: (1) I'm admiring your leggings - thinking I'd like to get them, but then thinking how I'd have terrible buyer's remorse and I guess I'll just stick…
  • In addition to the low carver daily forum mentioned above, check out ruled.me - it has amazing recipes and all the info and whats and whys you need to get started doing keto. I followed your last thread about losing weight for your wedding dress - I think you know you might not quite hit your mark and I'm glad you know a…
  • How do you figure 30 lbs? You may lose enough inches to fit into the dress (with maybe some help from shapewear) without losing that much. I'd say your best bet is to follow a ketogenic diet (depending on your starting size, you'll lose 5-15 lbs the first week from water and depleting glycogen), do some resistance…
  • I like keto personally; I also have done a little self-experimentation and found that I maintain on ~1800-1900 when doing keto, versus ~1600-1700 at more moderate carb intake, after adjusting for TEF and keeping protein intake constant. So, I like that I can eat a little more. I also have crazy cravings when I eat more…
  • Lately I've been frying two eggs, putting that over a spinach spring mix (just have a bin of it in the fridge), some sliced tomatoes, and top it with guacamole and sriracha. Takes about 5 minutes to prep, I like the egg yolks to be liquid. Edit: oh, and if 2 eggs aren't enough protein, I'll add on a chicken sausage link or…
  • I use it most days, unless I'm mostly just sitting around doing nothing. The one I've got is unflavored - just electrolytes dissolved in water, but you could add those Mio drops or whatever to give it some flavor too, I would think. I haven't been doing IF lately but I have before, actually now I wonder if I'd feel better…
  • I love BodyLogix Whey Protein, very reasonably priced compared to other brands, cold processed and sourced from grass-fed cows if that matters to you, also low carb/sugar -- I prefer to get my sugar from fruit and things and have a protein supplement be just protein. I don't use the chocolate variety so I can't comment on…
  • Yes. I seem to be disposed to problems with electrolyte balance - usually the symptom is a minor headache or general low energy, but occasionally I'll be very lightheaded or have brief blackouts if I get up too fast, during working out, etc. Bought an electrolyte supplement on Amazon you add to water (I think it's called…
  • Hahahaha I am a physicist. This is all hilarious. Anyway weight and energy are not the same thing. Energy can be measured in calories (defined as the energy it takes to raise a gram of water by a degree celsius, 4.186 Joules) and then food calories are kilocalories. But food calories are essentially determined by burning…
  • I won't comment on the science, there are way too many sweeteners out there and some are better health-wise than others, but if you're just putting some in your coffee and not baking with it en masse all the time, I wouldn't even worry if it DID cause cancer. That said, I can't use any artificial sweeteners at all, be they…
  • You look so gorgeous! I'm trying to get 15 lbs off in about the same amount of time and feel more confident hitting the beach, you're an inspiration!
  • I second what @vismal said. I think the people who say you gain all your weight back as soon as you eat carbs again are usually thinking of the dieter who (say) does a keto diet for 2-4 weeks, loses a lot of mostly water weight, then has a carb-up for whatever reason. I do keto normally and I'm a fan of having a carb-up…
  • I agree with almost everything @makinit10 has written, with a couple of exceptions: (1) < 20 g net carbs for life seems overly restrictive to me. There are some who may prefer eating this way, but there are a few reasons you may not want to do this. First, it's going to severely limit your fruit and veg options to only…
  • Hey try www.ruled.me for amazing recipes. As noted your initial loss is predominantly water from depleting your glycogen stores, but it can still be psychologically reassuring. If you want continued losses on keto, you'll have to pay attention to your calorie intake also -- establish where your maintenance is at, and then…
  • One Punch Man, Erased, Samurai Champloo, Cowboy Bebop (of course!), I'm totally loving Ajin: Demi Human on Netflix right now - it's really a very dark show but extremely well-done with incredible character development. Also more recent, Kuromukuro (also on Netflix), kind of in the vein of Evangelion but without all the…
  • I really like this: https://www.amazon.com/Trace-Minerals-Research-Performance-Electrolyte/dp/B000VDLD9S/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1488844572&sr=8-1&keywords=endure%2Bperformance%2Belectrolyte&th=1 Has stuff besides sodium, doesn't taste too salty in the recommended concentration, and has definitely helped me avoid…
  • Does this regularly happen or was it only the one >10 miler? I find my endurance dramatically improves on keto/LCHF, I can pretty much run until I get too bored. But, sometimes my body just isn't having it, I've done too much or I need food or sleep or rest or whatever. Make sure you listen to those cues regardless of what…
  • Mean personalities are so much harder to fix than weight problems ... when you lose the weight they'll still be stuck in their small petty worlds. You've got this. I think focusing on being healthy, active, and happy works so much better long term than saying "I want to lose XX lbs" because it can be discouraging…
